Just got the bodies a friend in the states sent me yesterday and I have such hyped plans for them all. I already took a stock Camaro body and added a rear spoiler to the back of it. It's going to recieve the Ron Fellows #3 Sunoco Camaro paint and that one is finished. Just going to use a stock Artin skinny chassis for now until I can get some guinee pig chassis with the rim and tire sets I want. Now my question. How difficult is it to use plastic tires and rims for a slot car? And if it's pretty simple, how do I stop it from spinning all over the place? I got a mean set of rims and tires from a reduced toy from the dollar store...paid 50 cents and have two stretched limo bodies, 4 spoked rim slicks(soon to be), and 14 what look like Recaro racing buckets all for 50cents. Not too bad!!! Any input into plastic wheels would be great. Things I really want to know are has anyone ever used them, and if they have, what have they done to them to make them grip. Thanks.

OK I'll bite. I am assuming you are talking about the whole assembly being plastic..wheel and tire. One way would be to find a rubber/silicone tire and stretch it over the wheel tire assembly ..might look mickey mouse, but it would probably work.

TomH is right Ed. And depending on the size of the all plastic wheel and tire assembly, it might be too big for what you want to do. Maybe you could trim down the plastic tire part before it gets to the wheel part, but that is no guarantee that you can keep it round and shapely.

If the plastic wheel-tire assembly is small enough, I have heard of some guys buying silicone and pour it over and around wheels and tires like that to create a silicone coating. They then cut, shave, sand and shape the silicone up around the wheel-tire assembly.

My best recommendation is to grab some Ranch Design wheels and tires and be done with it. Yes, you can probably find some Artin, SCX, or Carerra GO! wheels and tires too, but right now Artin is merging or doing something with FLY since the man who owned Artin passed away. SCX and Carerra have not produced a ton of spare parts - out of the two, SCX would more than likely have spares for purchase some place online.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the input guys but it seems like too much work for me to do this. I have found a couple of 1/43 guinee pig spoiler stockcars with some pretty amazing rubber tires and deep plastic chrome rims. Unfortunatly when I drilled them out in the axle pocket a little wider to slide onto an Artin axle they became untrue and now the back end wobbles. I got 8 tires from the 2 cars, and with my drilling experience I have 6 left to experiment with. LOL!!! Oh well, that's what this whole process is about....learning!!!

Put the out of round wheels on the car, lay some sandpaper underneath, 80, 100, or 150 grit and sand them down. Do it in spurts to let the motor cool off if you need to do a lot of sanding. Finish off with a finer grit paper, 320, 400. That should make a big difference. It may not be perfect, but it should give you a car you can run on the track.
