I'm shameless, I'll show you guys the way this looks (VoodooFX custom small kit)...wired up and installed before I seal up the.. hull?fuselage?

Randy did a smaller version of his FS-1kit for me (he also connected everything for me, thanks Randy)

It was a simple install, hiding the wires...was the hardest part...lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v351/stev123/DSCF0356.jpg

I'm still chasing light leaks...I was too lazy to pre-paint the interior black before I put in the grey..
Underneath that foil "half moon" is two sheets of the diffuser plastic that Randy sent with the kit. I have the one sheet facing the interior flat against the reactor panel, the other piece is curved and reflects all the back light...then I covered it with a little foil to add to the effect even more.

Forgive me for this shot..I'm pulling my hair out trying to get the lighting right in the room and I forget to clean up the background...lol

This is how the int. looks using one diffued led....

Steve, looking good!
After building the FS1 (round one). What would you do differently on a second (round 2) build of FS1? Please share any thoughts!

I'd paint the interior black first..A little thing. I would stay with the tamiya paint.

What I really want to do is play with the interior...some fiber optics to light little doohickeys..and pay lots more attention to lighting the dashboard.
Ohh, i'd really want to use automotive pinstripe for the trim. Any good auto paint store sells it I ain't ever gonna try and do those stripes again...I still need to touch then up

I used two L shaped plastic rods and just cought them on and velum on the clear back for diffusion.

That's cool! You did a much sleeker job on yours...
Mine is pretty much the same, just on a different axis..and a little deeper.

Isn't this fun?

Even came with a bumper sticker/stand decal...lol

steve 123, Were the blue stripes that difficult ? auto pinstripe sounds like a great idea . Do they sell the correct color pinstripe ? Great looking F/S and crew !!!

Not crazy difficult, but scary..as you can see I need to fix a few tiny leaks and add some blue in other places.
If you go to an auto paint store, they sell tons of different colors, it's not cheap, but the 3m stuff is amazingly flexible and cuts easily with a razor.
Thanks! I'm still trying to take a pic that I like of the bow area...

Steve

I would put the camera on a tripod and take two photos, one with the headlights off, to get proper metering of the sub in the ambient light. Then the next shot with the headlights and interior lighting on and let the camera meter off of them. Then, using a good photo editer like Photo Shop, open both pictures and put the first photo over the one with the lights on and carfully erase the area where you'd like the lights to show. Just a thought....

Question.

On that last closeup pic of the interior, above the reactor lights panel, the wall appears to be red and white checkerboard pattern. Is that from the show, or did you take poetic license, and decide to make that pattern for the wall?

I was just curious as to if it was an authentic thing I missed.

Thanks much!

Sincerely,
Scorp.

You guys do wonderful work on the finish for your models. Are there links, books, how to's, for a semi rookie that wold like to get some of those awesome finishes your pics show?
Another question is how do y'all avoid breaking off some of the antenna, periscopse and other last minute pieces that I seem to always break off...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve244

There are books that pertain to particular subjects, but mostly it's reading what's posted online and looking at pictures, both screen captures (from movies, TV) and buildups by others. Knowing what's possible is the most important. Oh and asking questions.

Me, I screw up stuff all the time. If you're not making mistakes you're not trying very hard... You repair it and go on. If it's a slender part that can't practically be glued back together, consider substituting unbroken styrene or some other material. Styrene in all basic shapes as well as brass stock is available from hobby shops. Also you can always write the manufacturer and they will often provide replacements free of charge (or for a small fee).

Check out CultTVMan's hobby store if you're into SF. He has a lot of publications as well as obscure kits and aftermarket parts. link (http://www.culttvmanshop.com/shop/home.php?cat=254)

Nothing tough to do, just used spray can paint to color everything.

There are tons of references out there and here too many to list in this post.

It's a good thing to leave all the little breakable items off untill the final assembly, that way you have less chance of breaking anything.
If you love the hobby you will find the resources you need, it just takes a little looking and digging.

Yup, it was 'ol Vic, he was the Cyborg inventor.

It's Playboy, hustler didn't exist in the '60s. With this 2nd season disk, I almost thought I was watching Batman....
Anyway,..This thread is going sadly OT mostly my fault... but let talk about ...shiny things,...that light up!...lol

steve123, I just wanted to complement you on your flying sub.You have done a lot of creative detailing on it! I have a couple of broken ribs, So i have some down time from work & am getting close to finishing my flying sub up.Question,Now that you have a lighting kit will you be sealing the model up,And is the electronics easy to maintain if you seal it up? I think i will seal mine up without lighting, But it looks like i can see the interior pretty good with the docking ring off,& the rear bulkhead hatch opened. That looks like a B9 key chain,Those were cool, I remember when they came out around 1998, the batteries in mine still work! Do you have the B9 ornament? Those are very cool:thumbsup:

Properly designed electronics will last a long time if you don't exceed the voltage/current specifications for it.

Thank you!
I was lucky to meet Randy @ VoodooFX (Thanks Seaview) He talked me in to calling Randy. And we are lucky to have a kit designed by guys who truly love the hobby and the subject. I think the only reason that the sub has the tunnel between the engines and the working hatches is to make lighting the kit all the more easy to do.
I'm not worried about the circuitry. Randy pre-soldered all the connections for me. The only predictable maint. should be changing the 9V battery and like Beatle Paul, I have the battery in the tunnel with enough wire to pull it out to replace it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v351/stev123/DSCF0384.jpg
I'd give lighting the sub another thought. It's stunning lit up, and there are lots of folks that are here to help you do it. This kit wasn't cheap and I think you owe it to your self and to the kit...lol to give lighting a shot..

This kit was "plug and grin"... I'm not an electronics guy, but VoodooFX asked what I wanted and fixed me up.

You can even install Randy's kit if your sub is built, just don't seal the hull....

Great job Steve!

I've got pics of mine in my photo album (http://photos.hobbytalk.com/showgallery.php?cat=638) with Drew' figures and Randy' light kit.

Randy' light kit was a breeze to solder and install. The only thing I changed was to replace the toggle switch with a magnetic reed switch.

I'm still trying to find places to put all of the LEDs Randy included in the kit ... :freak:

And ... I'm waiting for a few parts to come in before I seal the hull. I cut out the starboard landing gear door for a battery access and will add model car door hinges with a #2 flat head scew to keep it closed.

Very nice work!

Where are the extra lights at?....Have you lit the floor with 3?.. Ok looks like from the pic that you haven't lit the floor...that's where the extras should go. I hope you haven't nailed the floor assembly in place yet...you might need to dremel some wiring channels in the bulge around the docking ring so the floor will fit .

Great job!

Thanks Steve ...

The floor is lit ... you can see the hot spots in some of the pics ... I'm thinking of using a few of the extra LEDs with F/O filiments to light the panels. Just need to decide which lights to light ...

Hobby talks pic site is still down, maybe switch over to photobucket it's free.

Did you use the duffuser screen that randy puts in the kit?
It would help spread the light and diminish the hot spots.
