sheath 03-22-2009, 11:00 PM Dirt Oval racing is coming to Ft. Wayne this summer at Summit R/C Raceway. A clay oval was built late last fall and will be opening soon. This is the first season for dirt oval at Summit, so we are kind of playing this by ear to get things going. Waiting to see what classes will be popular with the racers to get things sorted out.
A couple of guys already have 1/8 scale electric late models, and plans are for Losi slider classes, both 1/10 and 1/18 and 1/18 Losi late models. There is a pretty good group of racers running Custom Works and Cobra sprint cars on the carpet oval, so there should be a good crossover of racers to the dirt. There is a small infield that will be used for a Slash class that will use both oval and infield for their course. I also assume that a stock late model class and a modified class will materialize. The track is located near residential areas, so all racing is electric only, no nitro.
Any suggestions for a first year track would be greatly appreciated. Hoping to have a great year outdoors on the oval.
Check out info on Summit R/C Raceway at www.summitrcraceway.com (http://www.summitrcraceway.com/) .
Kevin Cole 03-23-2009, 12:42 AM I'm very excited about the new dirt oval!
What day/time are you guys planning to run?And will there be open practice available on off days?
I'm looking forward to start running at Summit...please keep us up to date as info becomes available.
Thx!
kwiksi 03-23-2009, 05:58 AM Make it bigger with a real infield.
Don't commit to a large race only to ruin the track a few weeks before the race is scheduled!
sheath 03-23-2009, 09:26 AM Kevin,
Plans are to run the dirt oval on Saturdays. Not sure of the starting time yet... I believe the earliest would be noon, but think there was some talk of a later starting time. I will try to get more info on the website and keep it current when the details are worked out. What class(es) are you planning to run or would like to see?
nutz4rc 03-23-2009, 03:03 PM Scott,
Dale had said that track might open at noon and racing at 4 but I haven't talked to him for a bit about that.
Another class I mentioned to him could be Slash with 1/8th late model bodies. The body from my 1/8 electric conversion late model is an exact fit for the Slash. Just something to think about.

I run with Larry and the guys at Left Turn Raceway & Larry has really played a large part of me getting interested in the dirt oval scene.
I'm an old oval guy from back in the day, returned to RC a few years back and ran off-road at Planet & Joe's.That whole deal ran its coarse, and then I met Larry and he's helped re-spark may oval bug.I've been running with Larry,Jorge,Brad, and the gang at LTR and love turning left again.
I have picked up a couple rides for the summer...a Slash,a 10th scale B4/CW Sprint hybrid,and a couple Losi 18th scale sliders.
We're kinda hoping to run our new club(1st year for LTR too)dirt tri-oval as well as make frequent road-trips to Summit & possibly North Vernon.
I know its early, but we're all starting to get the dirt oval cabin fever blues.

Wow, I had not heard that... interesting concept. It would sure be realistic racing action with the body roll that the Slash would have.
Thx for the info sheath.

It's really not all that early. It will be happening before you know it.
nutz4rc 03-25-2009, 05:54 PM Scott,
I had informed Dale that we were going to run Slash oval (basically stock with radio and receiver changes allowed) and we are planning on running Slash late model. It so happens that the 1//8th late model bodies will fit the Slash with almost no changes except to the front bumper of the Slash.
Hopefully we can get several of the LTR racers to make it to Summit and run Slash and Slash Late Model.
wallyworld 03-26-2009, 10:15 AM On april 11 (Sat) at noon I would like to have a meeting with the racers about this summers dirt oval racing at Summit Raceway. This meeting will be for discussion of any ideas the racers have for our racing this summer. Thanks, Dale.

Rapid forward progess...I can already see I'll be a fan of Summit Raceway.
Count me in for the meeting...I might tag along with uncle Larry/or pick him up on my way.His grandson is closing in on a future in the NBA quick and our Larry Legend is right there to support him all the way.Hopefully there's not a game that day,but if there is I'll fly solo.
Thanks to all the good people at Summit for making this happen so soon.
nutz4rc 03-26-2009, 01:04 PM Kevin,
I will know more about the schedule a little later. We can probably work out riding up, but if I am able to go, I will probably want to stay and run oval that night.
Kevin Cole 03-26-2009, 02:06 PM No problem Larry. We can figure something out as it gets closer.I would probably want to stay for the racing as well.
nutz4rc 03-26-2009, 03:13 PM Kevin,
Cool, we can come up with something for you to run if you don't have anything.
Bahellcat 03-26-2009, 03:41 PM i have a rc 10 buggy gold bottom. it is a old car but still runs it has a 19 turn motor in it i wanted to know if there is a class i could run it in. i dont know if i eaven can get parts for it if i break it but would like to run it any way, if it fits in to a class that is.
nutz4rc 03-26-2009, 05:00 PM There are still parts available for the original RC 10. Does it have the old six gear tranny or the stealth upgrade? You can get a conversion kit from Speedys Racing and run EDM (eastern dirt modified) or late model. It would depend on what classes run at the track. They haven't decided on classes so they might even run a buggy class.
Bahellcat 03-26-2009, 05:54 PM it has all old parts on it that is cool on the conversion kit from speedys i did not know about that. thanks a lot for the info ill go check it out now.
nutz4rc 03-26-2009, 08:49 PM With any conversion kit, you may need to do some mods but usually a dremel and some time will make things work out.
Bahellcat 03-26-2009, 10:08 PM do you know where i can get parts for the rc 10 they got the converison kit and say any latemodel body will work. but id like to see about that stelth tranny and maby some up graded linkage mine is all orginal and i think it is going to be brittle.
wallyworld 03-26-2009, 11:00 PM Thx for the info sheath.

I would try dirt oval special shops like Speedys, Kipps Hobbies, etc. Also you see stuff on dirtoval.com for RC10s as well as on E-Bay.
sportpak 03-29-2009, 10:43 AM I am interested in the Slash racing. Where can I find rules? Are we box stock, stick packing it, or box stock :hat:spec lipo-ing:hat: it? Sorry to post here, I don't know if we'll have an official offroad thread for Slash racing. That may actually be a good idea if interest is as strong as it seems to be.
Ben
nutz4rc 03-29-2009, 11:18 AM We are racing Slash and Slash with 1/18th Late Model Body on dirt oval. Not using the jumps and offroad style. Not certain what Dale has in mind. That would be a good topic for the meeting coming on April 11
We are allowing changes to radio and receiver, shock oil, springs, spacers, and any batt including Lipo. This being a different track, Summit may adopt different rules.
scottman2007 03-29-2009, 11:24 AM larry rules state you are not allowed to change springs, just oil.and yes all you can do to the shocks is use spacers on the springs, but you have to use stock springs.
sportpak 03-29-2009, 11:33 AM Being a spec class, I thought a reasonable cap on battery size might come into play. Guys thinking that they need $150 lipos to compete sort of kills the spirit, but tighten them up too much and people have problems too. Hmmmm.....
Kevin Cole 03-29-2009, 11:47 AM I would think most of this needs to be addressed at the meeting on the 11th.With this being a new track/venture...no rules have been announced.I'm sure Dale will do so after the meeting.
I kinda agree with the battery deal, yet lipo's are the future, and the future is now.The more opinions at the meeting the more the "racer" input will be involved.
I'm hoping I have not spoken out of line here...I think the meeting should happen before any of us put the cart before the horse.
trackdog 03-29-2009, 12:14 PM For slash rules this is a good idea...........http://rcpro.rcsignup.com/nccs/rules.cfm
nutz4rc 03-29-2009, 12:41 PM In the rules for our track we did not state that you could not change the shocks. I think it was left open because being new track and most racers new to dirt oval, more variance was allowed.
As far as batts, I would rather run lipos. I have 3200, 4800, & 5400. I no longer have any NIMH.
I am flexible. The rules TrackDog posted look reasonable. Time will tell.
sportpak 03-29-2009, 01:15 PM For slash rules this is a good idea...........http://rcpro.rcsignup.com/nccs/rules.cfm
Those rules seem pretty reasonable. We should have those printed off to share on the 11th.
Ben
trackdog 03-29-2009, 05:57 PM Another advantage to those rules is that those are the rules Stateline and 2 other tracks I know are using. That way your not alienating those drivers from visiting your tracks.

It sounds like a done deal to me then. We gotta go with the flow so we have some interchangeability. (that may be the largest word I've ever written on a thread)

Larry was referring to our new dirt tri-oval in Muncie in his post...nothing has been decided in that regard at Summit.
Once again(like Seth said)everyone interested in running the new dirt oval at Summit should attend the meeting on April 11.That will be the perfect forum for questions, ideas, comments, and opinions. The owner and people who run the track will be present there and the interaction will be in person rather than in print on a thread.
kwiksi 03-30-2009, 05:45 PM Wow!
My apologies for stiring the pot. .Srry boys I must have got the wrong idea as to what Larry said. My bad.
Seth
I used to race there until the offroad track got shut down. It's too bad about what happened last year. Especially to Ben Ellis and his series. Left a bad impression on alot of people.
You used to run offroad at the track...what happened? Alot of you oval/onroad guys did.
Anyways. I thought about running Slash this summer at Summit, but doubt it. The current outdoor Summit layout doesn't appeal to me. I've been traveling to MI and OH to race offroad this winter and will continue thru the summer.
I have talked to Dale about this last year about keeping the door open for offroad infield. Didn't seem like he cared. So why try.
David Perez:wave:
sportpak 03-31-2009, 11:41 AM offroad had its time, attendence proved that there wasn't much left. Sorry, a few onroad guys aren't going to make everything happen for everyone, all the time. if offroaders want something to happen, offroaders need to step up. oval rules right now because the oval racers have stepped up and show up.
I can't wait to see some dirt oval action.
Ben
Bahellcat 03-31-2009, 05:12 PM ok oval racers will the 1-18th losi late model run on this track what does the turnout look like it will be. for it.

The 18th scale stuff seems to be pretty good on carpet. The 10th slider has a decent turn out too. I think starting out, the lower cost options will be very popular. I think Nick's has sold several Slash trucks in last couple weeks.

The attendance in offroad last year was about the same or as low as indoor onroad this year. Yet you guys still have a roadcourse to race.
airborn 03-31-2009, 08:02 PM indoor on road:
20 min set up.
10 min take down.
for 10-15 drivers
out door off road
-45 min set up
-track sweep every round
-track water every round
-60 min take down
-up keep of track all year long, one days work each week
-full one or two days work to change over track
for 10-15 drivers
yeah I don't see why we still race on road and not off road?
sportpak 03-31-2009, 08:43 PM Thanks Seth, a lot people don't know what goes on behind the scene.
kwiksi 03-31-2009, 08:58 PM Thanks Seth, a lot people don't know what goes on behind the scene.
You got that right Ben.:rolleyes::thumbsup:
jak43 03-31-2009, 09:22 PM Alot of us onroad guys are looking forward to the dirt oval. I will have a losi mini late model to run and a Custom Works sprint car. I am working on a VTA car for the dirt oval. Anybody else interested in trying it? A Petty Blue Plymouth sliding around the dirt will be cool.
John
FASTPZ 03-31-2009, 09:49 PM Leah and I have run the mini 1/18 scale late model around the dirt oval and wow was I impressed how fast and the way it handled for being completely stock out of the box. The oval should be a blast, and yes it could have been bigger but the size sounds pretty comparable to alot of other tracks. I have ran on other BIG TRACKS and they are rather boring and end up being all about motor. The oval will be alot more inviteable to the new racers, they like the speed and the art of learning to drive their vehicles. Instead of trying to learn these awesome big jumps that constantly can't maneuver their cars right and break their stuff. WE NEED NEW RACERS TO EVEN SUPPORT TO HAVE ANY TRACK HERE IN FORT WAYNE. WE NEED POSITIVE SUPPORT AND BRING NEW RACERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! DIE HARD RACER PHIL ZIMMERMAN
sheath 03-31-2009, 09:50 PM The 4-wheel drive touring/rally chassis are run as late models in many places. Not a stretch to see the VTA body cars drifting thru the corners. Does anyone make a Hudson Hornet body? '57 Chevy?
I have a Losi JRX2 with oval shock towers and short shocks that's probably older than a lot of the racers out there. The Custom Works Open Comp Camaro body that's on it right now is from at least 1990.
Somewhere I still have a magazine with the picture of Brad and Phil that took it to the likes of Rob Cutman and Brian Langraff to go 1-2 in the 4WD modified class that year at the old Summit Speedway.
Now I have to go dig that out of the box in the garage and scan it to put it on the website!!
FASTPZ 03-31-2009, 10:09 PM :thumbsup:The awesome thing about the outdoor oval dirt track is that it can be changed, the infield offroad can have more jumps and bumps with some interest from racers. I myself am interested in the slash trucks since they can run offroad and oval bodies that look like the real off road racing vehicles.:hat::wave:

sportpak 04-01-2009, 06:36 AM Who is that stalion on the right?
kwiksi 04-01-2009, 07:08 AM Seth
You think prep won't apply to the dirt oval? It may need more sweeping, water, and maint. than a offroad track. Setting up the AMB/pa systems will take the same amount of time.
We all want to play. It just sucks that the offroad guys have been alienated. We wish there could be a compromise, but the concensus has been that we're not wanted there. Hope this isn't the reason for not even trying and the sudden change last year. Oval guys are happier. Live it up guys.
Battlefront gaming in MI. held a Roar great lakes race 2mo. ago. I attended and was amazed that they had a indoor oval/offroad track with just moving a few tubes. They even let 1/8 elec. play with no gripe. The track is even smaller than Summit yet they pull it off. They run offroad Sat. and oval Sun. I thought why couldn't Summit pull this off? I guess where there is a will there is a way.
I've carpooled to 3 diff tracks out of state this winter to race offroad. Met other racers that have ran at Summit and get asked why no compromise with a combo oval/offroad and I shrug my shoulders.
squeeker138 04-01-2009, 08:35 AM a couple bodies for ya Scott
