View Full Version : SyFy channel, it's official for July 7th
Old_McDonald 03-22-2009, 02:27 PM The buffoons at the Sci-Fi channel are changing their name. It's obvious, with a few exceptions, they don't know what real sci-fi programming is so they are coining up a name which allows them to air just about anything and not be out of context with their channel name. I mean, how can any sane person believe that ECW is Sci-Fi?
So, here's a link to the official press release. The Sci-Fi channel as we know it is going away for a new, god knows what format to fit a meaningless name.

Well, it sure ain't real!
jheilman 03-22-2009, 07:31 PM So it has the fiction part down. Now if they can just work in some science...
Lloyd Collins 03-22-2009, 08:00 PM It is good that I can't access the channel. I will stick with DVDs, thank you very much!
ChrisW 03-22-2009, 09:01 PM Oh boy, oh boy! I can't wait. I mean, wow, just, like, you know, WOW! Like, you know, AWESOME! Um, totally!
Branding... seems to me there are some a$$e$ just ripe for "branding"...
Actually, I see their point. They have strayed so far from "Sci-Fi" that the name is a misnomer. Management thinks the new name will release them from the limitations of the Sci-Fi name (not that they have been restricted by it in recent years) while not disfranchising core Sci-Fi viewers... Its really the same as other "fringe" cable networks have done - after losing sight of their original premise, they attempt to increase viewership by broadening subject...making it similar to other cable networks, further homogenizing cable offerings...
Zorro 03-22-2009, 10:41 PM A world without "Mansquito" is too horrible to ponder.
yamahog 03-23-2009, 02:00 AM Well, it sure ain't real!
I don't know how you could say that, JP!

They could GO OFF THE AIR and I wouldn't care. The number of commercials and hideous programming make it unwatchable. Why not change it to "the drying paint channel" ?
I have NOT watched it for over 4 years now.
Old_McDonald 03-23-2009, 10:39 AM I have to agree. I remember when I first got the Sci-Fi channel on my cable network and was watching all kinds of Sci-Fi related shows like cartoons, talk shows about sci-fi markets, anime, buck rogers, star trek, etc.
but when the channel began carrying shows like ghost hunter, ecw, second rate amateur movies like mansquito, etc. I can hardly watch it anymore. Watching the 50th rerun of a stargate sg1 episode is better than that other c**p.
I'd much rather the sci-fi channel cater to it's intended audience and spin off the other stuff into other channels. My cable company just recently added the Chiller channel devoted to horror topics.
For all of the stuff like ECW, mansquito, ghost hunter should all be spun off to a Mysterious channel cause it's pretty mysterious how any of these got the funding to be made in the first place.

Spring Break Shark Attack was packed to the gills (sorry, couldn't resist) with science.

I ran across this channel the other day. Their entire schedule appeared to be old TV episodes of "Beauty and The Beast", one after the other. Let's face it - there are too many channels on cable and not nearly enough programming to sustain them all.
John P 03-23-2009, 12:52 PM ^Whenever I tune into Chiller, they're running Millenium. I thought THAT was their entire schedule!

What an impressive line-up.
I predict they'll be changing their name to "Chyllyr" before too long.

In the case of ECW it's a free show for the network. Production cost as well as ad sales are handled by the WWE with Universal/NBC getting a cut of the profit.
50 weeks of first run tv a year to air without spending a dime,as well as good raitings..... in this day and age it's what the networks dream of!

Maybe so and it's still out of context with what the type of programming the channel is supposed to show. Honestly, if a channel wants to make money on advertising, they need to show material that the target audience wants to see in order to get them to tune in. It may be a free show to the Sci-Fi channel but I'm sure the advertisers don't like their audience being driven off during that hour by programming that is complertely wrong for the targeted audience.
