What's the name of the tune that turned on the final five? I especially like the up-tempo one where, if Metallica had used a sitar and performed the song, it would have sounded like that. You know the scene in the bar and Starbuck is playing with the ghost of her daddy and Tigh and company are looking on all, "what the frak?" and the song goes all Indian metal? yeah, that one.

That was a completely different writing of the music for "All Along The Watch Tower" by Jimi Hendrix. Bear McCreary - who wrote the music for TNS BSG - composed that particular variation on the music. We hear the original version at the end of the finale.

Actually we hear Jimi Hendix's version. The original was Bob Dylan.

This may be slightly "off-topic", but if you listen carefully to the tune the piano player (Kara's father) "composed" on his own, you may recognize it as the opening first few notes from the original 1978 Stu Phillips theme.

Bear McCreary was involved in the composition/arrangement used for BSG, but the group that performed it is called Bt4 (of which McCreary is apparently a member).

The version of the song used in the show is also available on the Season 3 soundtrack CD. I have it, and it really does rock.

Another really good track from Mr. McCreary is from the Season 2 CD. It is called "Black Market" and was used as background music in the episode of the same name. It was a "Bonus Track" on my CD.

Thanks for the clarification, fellas. I knew that Dylan had done it originally, but was typing quickly and immediately fell back to the Jimi Hendrix version, since that's what we hear at the end of the episode - which I erroneously identified as the "original version" when I meant the version by Hendrix.

So, my apologies for any confusion I caused anyone. No excuses on my part.

That piece is called "Exploration" and featured prominently in the Pilot episode, "Saga of a Star World". It's the music that plays just prior to the opening title sequence and voice over by Patrick Macnee. I think they also use this same theme - or a variation of it - when we see Kobol for the first time in "Lost Planet of the Gods".

IIRC they also played the original series music during the decommisioning fly-by in the mini-series.

And possibly (although my memory's a little fuzzier on this one) for the news story filed by Deanna about the Galactica's crew.

Yes, the TOS BSG Theme was a part of those two scenes, Jim. It also factors in to a scene in the Series Finale - but I won't go in to that as I don't want to give away any further spoilers for those who might not have yet seen the Finale.

Bear McCreary also did a recording of the original theme to start out the second season soundtrack disc. He titled it "Colonial Theme" since it had been incorporated into the new show as a background theme.
