How many of you out there in internet land have been spending more $$$ on Matchbox lately? I'm thinking there have been several really cool castings lately. I know that I've spent more on Matchbox cars than HotWheels, Johnny Lightnings, Greenlights or anything else for that matter!

Same here. I like their new castings, and since everything on the higher level (Johnny, GL, M2) are way up there in the price range, I am more inclined to buy the a buck a pop cars. They have very cool and realistic castings (why I prefer MB over HW) and quality is decent. And I love that there are no Chase vehicles so that only a few castings are hard to find.

I prefer HW over MB just for the fantasy and interesting concepts they come up with... I find that ive only gotten a few MBs because they aren't as exciting or engaging... but i guess some people love realism (which is totally fine, nothing wrong with that).

I feel the opposite, interesting being in the eye of the beholder. I buy the MB's because the line represents actual vehicles, past and present. That's exciting to me and if you're into real 1:1's as much as I am, MBs are engaging. Hot wheels does a few nice realistic cars, but does so in a sea of fantasy, sometimes surreal, ones and sometimes behind some crazy tattoo-like paint and tampo scheme. Don't get me wrong, I get swept up in the HW craze sometimes, but if the mainlines were to disappear, I would still have my MBs and I would be satisfied. Like you said, though, there's nothing wrong with collectors who like the fantasy stuff.

It's been just two or three castings making it here to Lummoxland.
The little Alfetta GTV, the hearse, and the '69 Caddy-lac.
Out of the three, the Alfa is much more correct.
The Vista Cruiser might make it four when it arrives.
For me the dollar car of the last 2 years has been the HWs Ferrari 250 LM even though the wheels suck monkey nipples.

Yep, I like all the tampos/paint/crazy stuff, I mean after all, if i want realistic, I will get (and I have about 50 or more) 1:18 diecast for realism, but for hotwheels for me is the crazy stuff i wouldn't get in any other scale (especially bigger scales).

The combination of no new JLs, plus dull and/or ugly GLs means that I can buy at least one example of nearly every MBX release and not feel guilty. And they've learned that the way to keep people interested is through a continuous stream of great new castings plus many desirable repaints.

I love Jada, too, but they have also slowed to a trickle, except for their recent (and excellent) 5-packs.

You better buy all the Jada you can find. Word is they are on their way outta the diecast business. There's a lot of clearance Jada out there, especially in auto parts stores.

This thought has had me scratching my head recently. I don't pay a WHOLE lot of attention to Jada but I have heard or read even less than before about them lately.

Thanks, but it's not too important to me. I have pretty much enough Jada to last me awhile. It will be a shame if they do shut down, because the quality of the cars I've seen in the recent 5-packs has been their best ever (I bought all three, even though the 'Vettes are duplicates.) Nice color choices and decos, too, but IMO most Jada products have already been way above average in that aspect. Oh well, maybe I'll win the lottery & buy the co. someday.

And they hit quite a few "home runs" with some cool castings.

Matchbox brand is indeed owned by Mattel.
MBX has been making some pretty decent castings for years.
There is one year that was bad when MBX made the Ultra Heroes.
Remember them?
Other than that, I prefer MBX to HW.
That is the beauty of collecting; buy what you like.

Cheers. Cobra

I was at the Seattle Toy show this weekend and chatted with several collectors. Two of which are vintage only collectors but are finding themselves buying the new MB models. They love the selection of models and great realistic tampo designs. Seems like many are buying the new models that have not in the past.

MB has definitely stepped it up in the past few years. I have probably bought more than half of the new licensed castings put out in the past 2-3 years, and that is really saying something as I am very very particular.
