"...that feedback from 18-34-year-olds in focus groups...."
"It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip......."

You know....If you have to ask someone how the "hip crowd" refers to things....youuuuuuu might be *UN-HIP*

Apologies to Jeff Foxworthy

I read that and thought to myself ...."If only they put a fraction of that much energy into their programming."

Yes, classic films like Mansquito and Frankenfish will seem much more hip and classy when viewed on the new & improved SyFy Channel.

Yeah, it's the name of the channel that's the problem, not the crappy programming.:freak:

They want to have a generic name like 'Hagen-daz' or 'google' so they can broaden their marketing.

I guess they think that will be easier than trying to not suck as much as they do now.

Well, that's the kind of bone-headed move I've come to expect from Skiffy in the last 4 or 5 years.

Talk about people who don't know who their audience is. Type sci-fi into a seach engine and who do you get? Sci-fi channel. Type SyFy and you'll get what? Maybe the same thing, but why screw it up when the enter key already takes you to the front door? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Couldn't agree more. Didn't it occur to these "marketing genuises" that the reason these "hip" kids were IM'ing it as SyFy was because they were lazy and morons?

actually, I use this this as my signature on some other sites, but my reference is to "chatspeak" (more than the "leet speak")...but the point is the same.

we all use (for convenience) some of the acronyms like LOL or ROFL, but now we have bred an entire generation of Internet morons who can't spell or understand complete sentences, and this "Sci-Fi" alternative just panders to these "morons" and justifies their reasons for acting like preschoolers!

...and then these kindergarten goons tell me I am rude or ignorant (because I'm yelling) if I use CAPS OR BOLD TYPE!!...I COME FROM A GRAPHIC ARTS BACKGROUND WHERE CAPS AND BOLD TYPE ARE USED FOR VISUAL EFFECT, TO ADD AN ARTISTIC LOOK OR STYLE, OR JUST TO SEPARATE TEXT FROM SURROUNDING TEXT, THE SAME WAY I MIGHT USE COLOUR. are you saying WalMart IS YELLING AT YOU just because their logo is made with an upper case font (thats CAPS text for you Internet Idiots!)

Here's the part that holds the hidden joke for me:

"He told the trade publication that feedback from 18-34-year-olds in focus groups indicated that "SyFy" was the way many would refer to the network in text messages."

It sounds like they asked the 18-34 y.o.s how they might refer to the Sci-Fi Channel in the future if they ever have any reason to discuss it in text messages.

It doesn't quite say that anyone has been using that term on their own yet. I suspect that the focus groups were given a list of possible ways to refer to the channel in chatspeak style, and they chose "SyFy" (yuk I even hate to type that!) as the one they would most likely use. Someday. Assuming that they'll ever want to!

A little OT, but believe me, I understand. Four years in art school and both cursive and lower case letters were eradicated from my handwriting …and I don’t miss them at all. Maintaining the practice of cursive writing makes sense as long as we keep up with our fine horsemanship and wig powdering. Lowercase letters are for word processing, and I don’t see the need to remember fifty-two symbols for writing where twenty-six well practiced characters do a far clearer job of communicating. But then, that’s just me.

Lowercase letters are for word processing, and I don’t see the need to remember fifty-two symbols for writing where twenty-six well practiced characters do a far clearer job of communicating.I don't see any urgent need to bring back Spencerian penmanship, but a lot of people could use remedial lessons in cursive writing these days. Especially if they happen to have "M.D." appended to their names. Ever try to read a doctor's handwriting?

And if we're going to dispense with one alphabet, it should be the majuscule (capital) letters. Lower-case (minuscule) letters are easier to read.

We now rejoin our topic in progress . . .

We criticize them for language changes, then state how we do it too. Carn-sarn it.
