View Full Version : BLACK & WHITE: Mercedes 220SE Ambulances
karl s 03-11-2009, 07:04 PM The flag version was made by Tekno Denmark from ca. 1962-66, while the blue light from 1967-68. It was replaced by the FORD Taunus van.

Lummox 03-11-2009, 07:39 PM I'm a big fan of coachbuilt Benz wagons and ambulances and these have such charactor to them.
Thanks for showing them!
SMS88 03-17-2009, 05:13 AM Isnt the black one for corpses? And there is another much more common issue of this casting with red lower panels - I guess Karl must have one somewhere?
karl s 03-17-2009, 06:32 PM I looked for this black/red one for years and just found one for a decent price this year!

The red version has the A9 symbol on the door, from the Danish fire dept. The black and white/black versions have the Falck symbol which is a fire and rescue company, so I do not think they ever had hearses (but I could be wrong).

I have seen dozens of the red/black versions and have owned 3 of them which came real cheap. The black/white ones are also about but I have never seen the all black car before. As they are screwed together I could make an all black car by swapping a white top over onto a red base;)
Falck used to be a State owned monopoly that ran ambulances too,now they are in the private sector and face competition
Even today, Falck uses white vans to collect dead bodies from homes.
A 9 would also be the registration plate of the Fire dept car, today all fire trucks have registration plates with one letter ,that silver chromed crest and then two numbers on a white background

There is one of these black 1960s Mercs preserved that I saw a few years ago here- what a great pic! A good number of Falck firetrucks are preserved here and make an impressive display at the annual city centre firehouse openday
This VW is a typical standard Copenhagen ambulance of this millenium since the white livery was phased out. However the newest deliveries in the same livery are Mercedes Sprinters. Just to be different, the traditional white with orange stripes livery survives on Fredriksberg Sprinters which get around most of Copenhagen

Interesting coachwork on this one.
Notice how they stretched the wheel base, but for some reason the eliminated the rear side doors.
It appears to be either a 190 or a 220 non "S" model.

Its probably a 230 - the 6 cylinder engine was used in some basic spec bodies and ambulances needed power....
Lummox 03-19-2009, 01:15 AM Forgot about the 230....even though I had a 230 sedan! (duh)

I have only been a passenger in some of these 1960s sedan bodied Mercs but I remember them as well sprung & gutsy with a charming upright rectangular speedo, column gear change, bench front seat and chrome steering wheel....lovely!
Lummox 03-20-2009, 11:17 PM Yup! Strangely sexy (in a Germanic kinda way).

At a Copenhagen central square display of ambulances and firetrucks today was this photograph showing Mercedes 220 ambulance A12 when new in 1959. Apparently A1-12 were built in 1959, and replaced eventually with the 1974 batch A1-12 which were the last to carry the red/black livery, one of which was on display today
Lummox 08-16-2009, 10:51 AM Love it!!!
Any pix of the the cars you saw?
ranchero 08-16-2009, 06:35 PM The majority of these MB "coaches" were built by the German company Binz. Another company, Meisen, built some. I believe the Tekno toys are models of Binz "coaches".
Binz is still in the business of modifying Mercedes automobiles into "coaches" and limousines also.
dragonhead00 08-16-2009, 07:39 PM Wow! Some spectacular examples in those pics. Thanks for the show guys! I have one Merc ambulance in very played with condition. It's definitely not as nice as those.

Lummox 08-17-2009, 12:09 PM Haha! They got that 245's roof screwed on backwards!
Maybe they cross-threaded it and it stuck there.
