View Full Version : Car handling - floating is the best way to describe it
gndprx 03-10-2009, 09:32 PM We've started testing some open oval cars at The Grove in Rock Hill, SC. It's about a 380+ runline high banked concrete tri-oval.
Until now, the fastest non nitro cars were the 21.5/LiPo cars and this is what I used as my baseline setup.
What I'm running into is the car feels like it's floating on exit of the turns. Full 4 wheel drifting up the track which obviously is very rough on the tires and really killing my forward bite exiting the turn. It's not really pushing or loose, just not planted.
The nitro pan cars can run about .5 sec/lap faster than we are running right now and they are glued to the track and don't see anything like this.
So if I can't describe the car as loose or tight, how can I start adjusting this condition?
ScottH 03-10-2009, 10:14 PM What is the motor and batt you are running?
One thing I have heard is the track is bumpy and that is really going to mess with things when you start putting in the HP.
parrott88 03-10-2009, 10:31 PM I would try softer tires all the way around! 21.5 lipo wieghs alot less than a nitro car.
That is, If your trying to run the same tires
ScottH 03-10-2009, 11:15 PM Good point -- the Nitro Pan cars weigh in at 48oz.

Tires, Body, and wing. Pink L Fronts, Red L LR, and an S Pink RR. Protoform THD and a body mounted Bud's Bi-Level wing. I'd also run 10.5 with a 5200 SMC and go from there.
I could build a Mod car that would run sub 5 second laps and this is what I would start with to run down there.
Echeconnee 03-11-2009, 07:29 AM Just curious, Why a body mounted wing instead of a pod mounted one? Thanks

More rear grip or forward drive. 10.5 mod on caps is gonna be insane!
gndprx 03-11-2009, 05:25 PM I have a 10.5/LiPo in there now, but I don't have it geared for any faster than 5.5 or so right now. Obviously the motor has lots more in it, but until I can get a grip on the mid 5's handling I don't want to kill the equipment by simply gearing up to optimum right now.
The fastest gascar last Saturday was a 5.1.
Right now I'm running a charger body with single level body mounted wing and specs on the left, spec nets on the right. I thought about going back to the THD but wasn't sure if that was the right move since we started backing off to medium downforce bodies in 21.5 last year.
And yes, the track has "character" and is bumpy.
TBRC1 03-11-2009, 05:27 PM Not to mention that a pod mounted wing will move with the pod when the chassis compresses in the turns. The body mounted will stay the same all the way around the track every lap. That's the way it was explained to me a few yrs ago and I have been running body mounted ever since. Even on the flat tracks !!
Tornado_Racing 03-11-2009, 06:13 PM I read that there is a Speed Race sometime in July. Fastest lap pockets $50.00 and if you break the current track record another $50.00 will be thrown in.
NOTE TO SELF:
Call Barry and order cars
Call Rufty for the rent-a-ride
Call Humpty, Bush, and JW for some brain pickin'

Tornado_Racing 03-11-2009, 06:50 PM I was also thinking maybe single cell with a 2.5, 3.0, or 3.5 instead of 10.5/2-cell lipo. It won't be as violent off the bottom end and will be able to hook up better.
Flipper13 03-11-2009, 08:34 PM Tornado if you got to pick brains " I AM IN TROUBLE THIS WEEKEND"
killerkoncepts 03-11-2009, 08:36 PM ahh just sit there and look old! youll be ok!....

Eaaasyyy.... Don't talk about Tony's "DAD" like that....:woohoo:
gndprx 03-11-2009, 10:11 PM Yup, $50 for fast lap of the day and $50 for breaking the track record. Still not sure what that is but they are working on it.
We are also kicking around the idea of 13.5/1-cell/COT class but right now it's just talk and a little testing.
