View Full Version : Are Kyosho really 1:64 ??
citylights17@ho 03-05-2009, 03:46 PM i bought four kyosho cars on ebay intending to use them as scenery in the paddock area of my slot car track. much to my shock and awe they are very small in comparison to my tomy, tyco, JL and other cars that are considered to be 1:64. what scale are the kyosho?? the box says 1:64. either way i'm going to let them go. kyosho: 1958 ferrari 246 F1 mike hawthorne /red - 1955 maserati tipo 61 /white - 1962 ferrari 250 gto /red JTL: 1955 lotus eleven -green. the lotus and the maserati are assembled in the cube the f1 ferrari and the ferrari gto are kits (easy to assemble) on cardboard packaging.
just as i recieved them five minutes ago. i'm bummed. PM me if interested.

Atencio 03-05-2009, 06:54 PM What kind of other cars are you comparing these cars to? The Ferrari 250 GTO is the only car you listed that even comes within 1,000 lbs of a normal car.
Maserati Tipo was a tiny car weighing in at just a tad over 1000 lbs.
Lotus 11 is even lighter.
PM me on what you would like for them. Most interested in the Lotus 11 and 246 F1.
citylights17@ho 03-05-2009, 07:44 PM i'm comparing it to cars like tyco chaparral tyco, porsche 917, greenlight corvette.
they may be scale but they look terribly small placed right next to the others. the slot cars average 2 3/4 inches x 1 1/4 inches my diecast (GL JL et.) vary from 2 3/4 to 3 inches x 1 inch.
the kyoshos are about 2 1/4 x 1 inch.
you're right the originals were tiny in comparison to street and later racing cars. mj
The Lotus 11 is a 1/72 scale car by Yowli(sp?) Modeli, part of their La Festa Mille Miglia collection. The others are Kyosho cars and should be true 1/64 scale, based on some measurements I've done.
Atencio 03-05-2009, 09:28 PM I think the Yowli is 1/64 scale. The car is smaller than a birdcage Maserati at 900 pound. The car is barely larger than one of the go carts at Disneyland.

kneedeep56 03-05-2009, 09:30 PM Should you decide to rid yourself of the Ferrari 250gto and the Maserati Tipo 61 - I would be interested in those two.
I don't do Paypal so it would have to be Cash or Money Order.
Once you decide PLEASE let me know...

Thank You, Denis
69Stang 03-05-2009, 09:37 PM As for the scale, I agree with the guys, I think they are more true to 1:64th than you might think!
Also, put me down behind Atencio and kneedeep if any are left.
Atencio 03-05-2009, 09:38 PM I was hoping the Lotus 11 was a Kyosho. I have the Yowli all ready. I passed. Next up.

The lotus is "jtb motivations" co. is that the same as yowli?? here is a site with a listing of "all" lotus diecasts and a link to a company that sells some.
sorry i'm not fully decided on selling yet but will decide soon.
heres the link http://www.lotusdriversguide.com/Modelcars/mkxi.php
also the link to the guys in japan that i got the kyoshos from. they sell on ebay and have their own site. they were good to deal with and shipped relatively quickly. (11 days to cali)
www.bewith.info mj
Atencio 03-06-2009, 01:17 AM Wow, that was a cool link of Lotus diecasts. Thanks.
Yes the JTM Motivations appears to be the same car. Actually the correct name of the diecast maker is Yow Modellini. I would have never remembered that if I didn't have it written down.
citylights17@ho 03-06-2009, 01:50 PM you guys are 100% right they are tiny cars!!!!!
toyota spyder (a very small car)
Overall length 152.9"
Overall height 48.2"
Overall width 66.7"
Curb weight 2150 lbs
1956 lotus 11
length 3404 mm / 134.0 in
width 1524 mm / 60.0 in
height 940 mm / 37.0 in
weight 450 kg / 992 lbs.
i've decided to keep them they look great in my paddock. i placed them together and put
some smaller diecasts in closest proximity to them so they don't look weird. even though they are correct scale. thanks for the help. mj
kneedeep56 03-06-2009, 08:19 PM I'm happy for you that you decided to keep them - they are great little cars with a ton of history.
Good Luck with your track - any pics ?
hookie 03-06-2009, 08:50 PM My collection only have items on true 1/64 scale, I really have an obsesion with the accuracy of scale, and in my opinion Kyosho is one of the manufacturers that really makes true and accuracy 1/64 models.
The scale in J.L., Tyco, Matchbox, Racing and champions... are only aproximately and is not true 1/64
citylights17@ho 03-06-2009, 09:16 PM My collection only have items on true 1/64 scale
yes the kyosho cars are beautiful, especially because i love early 50s to late sixties sports/racing cars. do you know of any other companies that make true 1/64 scale cars of this type??
since i am using them as static models for my slot car track they have to look good mixed in that situation. it is extremely hard to find everything buildings, people cars et. in the proper scale for 1/64 scale. very challenging and pricey.
yes there will be pix in a couple of weeks. too busy right now. i will post some here and some in slot cars/track building.
thanks guys for getting me to slow down and research some.
i was p&ssed yesterday now i'm happy. mj
I love Kyosho minicars because of their sclae and detail, which is why they have been my mainline for several years now.
Kyosho released ferraris, bmws, Porsches, Alfas, and lambos, and toyotas from the 60's era. All of them are in true 1/64 scale.
With regards to the JTB release, are they all in 1/64 scale? Isn't the Bentley too small for the scale?

Pretty sure the Yow Modelli / JTB Mille Miglia cars are 1/72 scale. I have their Bentley and OSCA MT4. The OSCA is definitely 1//72 or close to it, and Bentley, while looks like it its with 1/64 cars, should be 1/72 as well - that was a HUGE car.
Atencio 03-07-2009, 01:42 AM Yeah it is hard to say for sure G_G I guess without measuring despite what the literature says. I placed my Lotus 11 next to a Shelby 427 Cobra and the size difference is close enough to make me believe that the Lotus can't be 1/72 given the measurements of the real cars. The AC Ace Bristol also looks to be in 1/64 scale. The ones I don't feel as confident about is the Bentley as mentioned and also the OSCA MT4. The Osca was another tiny car but the casting is smaller than the Lotus 11 which makes me ponder. Given the obscurity of the cars in diecast though I won't loose much sleep over it as none of the six except for the Bentley has been done in 1/64'ish. If you get a chance check out the 1/43 scale stuff Yow Modellini makes. Pretty cool stuff.

Thanks. I tried to look up the osca, here's what I found...I think the Jtb might be 1/64.

Atencio 03-08-2009, 04:51 PM A few of the High Speed cars I have seen in the past couple of years looks questionable to be 1/64.
citylights17@ho 03-09-2009, 12:10 AM beautiful collection hookie!! and thanks for the list of true scale makers. mj

You are right Atencio, High speed has some items on "false" 1/64 scale, thanks for the info.
