View Full Version : COT Spec Class?
dragracer53545 03-03-2009, 08:02 PM Hello,
I was wondering what kind of interest there is for a COT Spec Class? I would like to get back run oval again but do not want to spend all the money on foams for the car(exotics-one color for each corner). How many tracks are running a COT bodied class?
Thank you for the info.
Dave
wrenchhead 03-03-2009, 09:55 PM lake city raceway in plattsburg ny runs a cot spec class it has to be a novak 17.5 and novak speed contral bsr spec tires must run green right front and a spec 1600 battery and must cut body at factory lines it is a great class and the racing is always close i think they get at least ten or more entrys a week
dragracer53545 03-03-2009, 10:37 PM Thank you for the Info. I am hoping that something can get started. Would like to stay away from 21.5.
Dave
C43GO 03-03-2009, 10:41 PM at the tri clone we went with the 21.5 with a maximum rollout that we tested to put the cars about 1/2 second slower than normal 21.5's and went with jaco world class lilacs all the way around and some of the closest racing we have. you must also run a nascar body cut on lines.
Gary McAllister 03-03-2009, 11:37 PM Hi dragracer-
Our COT bodies are being used for 1/10th spec classes more and more around the country.
However we just introduced a COT body for the Losi Mini Late Model chassis which is a great entry level way for racetracks to get people involved in RC oval at a budget price. There has always been a need and constant search for an inexpensive way to get started in stock car oval. I think this is an excellent solution that is inexpensive with modern equipment and parts support from a large manufacturer.
Here is a link to see our 1/18 COT body...it will also work on most current 1/12th cars.

J-Dub Racing 03-04-2009, 12:41 AM You dont have to run a COT body to have a spec class. You can just run say the Jaco lilacs, or BSR spec tires all the way around, 1C lipo pack, and a 17.5 motor. Other than the 1C battery you can pick everything up used in the swap and sell area for under $200 bucks.
IMHO the best thing for tracks and racers to do is make as much as you can uniform. That way if you travel to another track, or if you are the only one that shows up for your class you are still able to race. Once you start making crazy body rules or tire rules then it makes it hard to move from class to class.
I love spec racing, and it is a great budget class, but try to make it easy to move up when your skills or wallet allow.

Tommygun43 03-04-2009, 02:36 AM Joel I agree with you completely about having uniform rules between tracks.
Here is some COT racing from Plattsburgh NY. sorry it made is so big. (click HQ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCBfywfELFI
Gary McAllister 03-04-2009, 09:48 AM Hi Tommygun-
Thanks for the cool video...awesome racing, clean driving...love the enthusiasm, looks really fun.
Oh...cool looking bodies too !!! lol
Absolute proof that the COT cars can make for great racing just like CUP. Right now while the bodies are all the same is a good time to even the playing field.

sbrady#0 03-04-2009, 06:57 PM hey thoes look like they handle better than the big ones now if nascar would run a three shock pancar on carpet maybe more people would buy tickets and come out to watch
swtour 03-05-2009, 02:26 PM IMHO the Losi Latemodel with a McAllister COT Body is nearly "The PERFECT" Oval "Spec RTR Class"
The body is a good fit, it's modern (as modern as NASCARS COT can be) it's well priced, it's a complete RTR car that would look great on an oval with Gary's body. The size is great for the smaller carpet tracks in the country...
koolaid89 03-08-2009, 12:30 AM Is that track in a basement? Sounds like my kind of house...
dragracer53545 03-08-2009, 07:15 PM The idea that I was looking at for a COT Spec Class would be 1cell lipo/13.5 Spec Tires and a COT or Truck body. I was just thinking of trying to find a way to race oval and not be so expensive(exotic color compounds on tires and a bunch of bodies to chose from).
Thank you for the input
Dave
D&D Race 03-09-2009, 12:13 PM I currently use McAllisters ASA Latemodel body. You can't play with the spoiler and all the bodies are the same with different stickers.

COT Spec class is an excellent Idea. I'll keep checking in here and let me know what your rules will be so I can try it here in the North East as well. Unless you live in the North East.
D&D Race 03-09-2009, 12:37 PM Oh yeah here is my 1/12 McAllister stock car body on my 1/18 mini latemodel chassis.

dragracer53545 03-09-2009, 05:49 PM D&D, I live in Wisconsin. I see the ASA cars are Touring cars. What are you running for motors, batterys and tires?
Dave
Gary McAllister 03-09-2009, 06:57 PM D&D-
There is a healthy COT spec class at C&N Hobbies in West Chazy, New York. Also quite a bit of activity in Maine as well.
The Milwaukee Late Models look great. I'm surprised more Pan Car racers aren't interested in the ASA style Late Models since they are so popular on Pavement Short Tracks all around the country.

sbrady#0 03-09-2009, 07:45 PM and ASA car look like cars on the street.
D&D Race 03-10-2009, 09:19 AM My spec touring class is called the Limited Latemodel Series you may use any shaft drive electric touring car. Right now we use a closed endbell 540 motor like the Traxxas 20turn stinger motor or the HPI 20turn Saturn motor. etc. this way the motors can't be tampared with. but this year we will be switching over to either the associated 30,000 RPM Radon motor, or the 21d fireball motor. Batteries max. size 6 cell 7.2v 3300 nimh packs. and any rubber street or slick tires, any touring car rim. all bodies will be the #228 ASA Latemodel body by McAllister racing bodies. rules are pretty simple.
I live in NH so going to NY is a little hike for me, but if a touring series caught on where a lot of tracks adopted the same rules. I might be tempted to race around. and meet new friends. :dude:
Butters16 03-10-2009, 08:37 PM We don't have much of a touring car class. we are running 1/10 pan car with the cot body , BSR spec tires , Trinity Spec battery (going to switch to 1 cell next season) and Novak ESC and Novak 17.5 motor. it is one of most competitive classes i have seen, no one knows he can or will make the show. The big thing we did is not let the guys slam the bodies, they must be cut at the factory line.
dragracer53545 03-10-2009, 08:46 PM Butters,
Would love to see the lap times on the class against 21.5/lipo. Have you tried a 13.5 at all? The only input I have is a couple guys are running 12th scales 17.5/4cell and 13.5/1cell lipo and the cars are pretty close in speed. What are you running for weight?
Dave
Butters16 03-10-2009, 09:12 PM we don't run 21.5 lipo , track isn't big enough. The track is a 88 foot run line carpet oval. fast lap for the COT class is 3.23 and 13.5 fast laps are 2.98. we are running 41 oz weight for COT and the 36 oz for 13.5 1 cell
D&D Race 03-10-2009, 11:56 PM we also don't slam the bodies either or cut out the rear of the car.
