View Full Version : What HO tools to get?
bobwoodly 03-02-2009, 06:49 PM My anniversary is coming up and I'm looking (well the wife will be) for some of the more deluxe special purpose HO tools - gear press, wheel puller/press. Anyone have a suggestions for which tools and brand/source? I've got all of the basic stuff and work mostly on tjets and AFX.
btw what causes some armatures to run hot? Any fix besides rewinding them (which I don't know how to do, yet)?

JW's Speed Parts makes a wheel puller, specially made for the Afx front wheels. An excellent tool to have when you work on MT/non-mag cars.
Many things can make an arm run hot. The most common are:
Friction or binding of the gears/axles
Too much brush tension
Aurora Tuff Ones are notorious hot-runners
There are other causes....
neorules 03-03-2009, 12:01 AM I would check out Scale engineering and see if he has anything you want. I know his tools are very high quality and endorsed by some of the top racers around. Here's the link:http://www.scaleengineering.com/
sethndaddy 03-03-2009, 03:18 AM I found that hobby store "micro glue applicators" to be one of my more used items, both for glue and oil.
and I know its not a tool, but thunderbrushes are a must.
AfxToo 03-03-2009, 08:07 AM Some not so obvious tools not already mentioned:
1) Digital caliper (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=47257)

4) Mini alligator test lead jumpers (http://www.wiredco.com/mini-alligator-insulated-test-jumper-cables-p-244.html)

You are missing the 16 pound "final adjustment"sledge hammer. Just the thing for those times when everything else has failed.
Hutts love hammers. :drunk::hat::freak::dude:

Slott V 03-04-2009, 12:16 PM Depending on your budget, these are very cool tackle boxes for your small HO parts. These are the preferred storage boxes of Gary Beedle at the races I've attended with him. Very slick:

I'd also like to suggest looking at the HO tool selection at SlotPro. Jim is always up-to-date with the latest and greatest tools from beginner to top level racers.

TOO FUNNY!!!!! I have the complete set of tjet hammers. A MUST for those stubborn builds.
AfxToo 03-04-2009, 08:54 PM If you like the individual little storage containers, I found a bunch of these units (shown at the top of the page linked below) at a craft supply warehouse (Flower Factory) at quite a bit less than what this site is asking. I now have what feels like unlimited storage with every unique parts variation having its own individual little storage container, with a screw on lid. Being clear you can easily find what you are looking for in a snap and parts don't sneak between the compartments like they do in a divided unit. They come in 12 and 24 (and larger) individual container packs and the box they fit in is clear. Nice and compact and easily fit in your pit box or luggage if traveling to a race.
There's now no excuse for having a disorganized parts storage system.
