View Full Version : Converting a .12CV to a .15CV
Sam32 02-23-2009, 12:35 AM Well guys, it looks like I am going to be running GASCAR this year, so I wanted to make sure I understand the new engine rules correctly. The way I understand it, I can still run an OS .12CV if I choose, but without a weight break or any other adjustment to make up for it being a smaller engine. Or, I can take one of my OS .12CVs and get a stock piston, sleeve, and cooling head for a .15CV and have a legal engine. Is this correct?
ScottH 02-23-2009, 01:06 AM Sam, the parts are totally interchangable as far as I can tell. The only difference is the bore, the stroke stays the same.
The only thing that would be a "sticking point" is the rule that states:
Engines must remain stock, with no modifications.
So that being said, if you put a .15 sleeve and piston in a .12 case, that is in violation of the letter or the rule. Also if the engine were "teched" as a .12, seeing as the case would indicate it was a .12, there would definately be a difference in the bore making that an illegal .12.
Now, all this being said, it is up to Tim to be the final say on it.
Are you going to run all the races?
Sam32 02-23-2009, 01:37 AM Yeah, I'm planning on running the whole series. If you check out Mclin's forum you'll see why. I really hate it for Mclin, but I love racing nitro pan cars and GASCAR is a great group of guys.
The reason I was thinking that you could convert a .12 to a .15 was from the vote last year, where part of the reasoning for going to the .15 was the interchangeable parts. So, if I say that it is a .15 (and possibly change the endplate? I don't know these engines inside and out and would have to go look at a .12) and have it teched as a .15, if all other parts are interchangeable it should be the same as a stock .15CV and should be legal, shouldn't it? I'm not trying to pull anything over, I'm just trying to save some money, but if I have to buy an actual .15 I will.
ScottH 02-23-2009, 02:06 AM I hear ya 100% and I have no problem with it at all. I was only pointing out what I thought to be a sticking point.
Tim will probably get on here in a day or two and see this and post an answer.
IMHO, if .15 is legal the it can be in a .12 case.
Benjie Wright 02-23-2009, 09:02 PM Stick with the .12 Sam, you'll be just as fast as those slow coyote's anyway. Eerybody knows why the Smurfs wanted the .15---because of the Stinking Blue Head. I will be trying my .12 against some of the .15's hopefully in a test at Rock Hill. If it's close to them i can hit them and i will win that way. I think the .15's should be mandated to run a 150 restrictor and the .12's should be able to run in some type of outlaw configuration. HEHEHEHEHe
THE RED RIDER
ScottH 02-23-2009, 10:04 PM Look here Little Red Riding Boy. You spend nearly the whole winter scared and in hibernation and this is the garbage you come up with?
The way you drive you shuld have to run a .004 restrictor in the .12's.
What do you care? You probably won't even be there. :D:D:D
Good to see ya Benji!
Sam32 02-24-2009, 02:17 AM Thanks for the responses Scott, we'll just have to see what the "leader of the pack" has to say about it.
Benjie, I think I needed a .15 last year to keep up with the Smurf ".12s";)
Seriously though, I am going to keep my good .12 together as a back up.
I am looking forward to running with you guys again. I didn't even get to in the main at the Nats because I plugged in my new lipo transmitter pack backwards and fried my module before the mains. All through the .09 main it had a strong smell of burning plastic and wires, and even glitched a few times. The .09 could handle bumping the wall a couple of times on the frontstretch, but I did that in the .12 the week before and only recently got all the damage fixed.
Clinchkid 02-25-2009, 11:07 PM Hey Sam, just check the prices on the piston, sleeve and head for .15, U may come out the same to buy a whole motor, $99.99 at tower with pull start. FYI.
Hey PHE PHE Rider, The way you modify a .12, you wnat need a .15!:p Congrats on the ride, we need a little more MFG comp in the series. Later B Rags
Sam32 02-26-2009, 12:24 AM That is good advice Brian, I'll do that. Thanks.

COYOTE 02-27-2009, 10:59 AM On converting a .12 CV to a .15CV.......
The GASCAR rules state that an engine MUST remain in STOCK form, with no modifications. It can re-rebuilt with stock manufacturers' parts, to manufacturers' specifications. If a racer puts a .15 sleeve and piston, into a .12 case, he has actually MODIFIED the engine. Your engine will be teched as either a stock .12 or a stock .15. We made this rule to give racers the choice of either engine, since the .12 had been discontinued. You will have to cut the "tit" off the crank of a .15, and put a stock back plate on it in order to convert it from a "pull start", but that is a functional thing. Racers can continue running their present .12CV engines, or go with the .15CV. The cases for the .15 and .12 are stamped with the size on them i believe.
I checked the published OS Engine Specifications and once again, they are not very consistent. They have the weight of the 12CV w/o muffler weighing 7.98 ounces, and they list the 15CV w/o muffler as weighing 7.33 ounces. Regardless of this, the legal weight of a car must be 48 ounces with a full tank of fuel. GASCAR rules do state that a racer can run an aftermarket cooling head on the .12, but the .15 must run with the stock "Blue" head.
Availability was the reason for the addition of the .15CV engine being legal. I will continue running my .12 engines, as we have too much power in the first place....... but that's my decision. Racers have the option to run either engine, but under the rules stated by GASCAR. Parts are interchangeable, ie. the carburetor, back plate and flywheels, etc. But, they must remain in stock form. It might be cheaper to actually purchase a new .15, than to convert a .12 by buying parts. But tech inspection will look at the stock configuration, and judge accordingly.
I hope this helps and clears things up. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

COYOTE 02-27-2009, 11:58 AM 2009 GASCAR ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS:
After doing some further research, I have decided to go with the engine specs as follows on the .12cv and .15cv engines for the 2009 GASCAR season. These will be the specs used during tech inspection:
OS.12CV
BORE: 14mm
STROKE: 13.7mm
WEIGHT: 230g
OUTPUT: 0.56hp
OS.15CV
BORE: 15.2mm
STROKE: 13.7mm
WEIGHT: 264g
OUTPUT: 0.68hp
This is the information I have been using for previous technical inspections, so I think these are the best and most consistent figures to go by. I will add this to the engine specs in our rule book, and post it on our GASCAR website. We don't check the engines weight, nor can we measure the output, but we do check for bore and stroke and do a thorough visual inspection of the interior of the case and crank. I am providing the weight comparison for you to make decisions on which engine to run.
Tim Smith, GASCAR
McLin 02-27-2009, 06:54 PM What is the .12 and the .15 a measurement of?
ScottH 02-27-2009, 08:05 PM What is the .12 and the .15 a measurement of?
Inches of displacement.
Sam32 03-01-2009, 04:50 PM Ok, I am still a bit confused Tim. From your first post I thought I would just buy a .15, but from the second one it sounds like I could show up with an engine that fits those specs and be legal. However, it doesn't really matter because according to Tower's prices it would only be $7 less to convert a .12 to a .15, so it is a better deal to just buy a .15 because you get a completely new engine for only $7 more. So thanks guys, it turns out my idea wouldn't save me anything in the first place. I'm sure I'll have more questions before the season starts.
Sam
ScottH 03-01-2009, 05:37 PM Sam, there are 3 engines legal in the GASCAR series. The OS .12cv, OS .15cv and the Duratrax .12SPD.
At one time there were a few manufacturers that made engine similar in specs to the OS 12, but that is no longer the case. Most engines have gone to rear exhaust, we run side exhaust.
Hope this helps a little.
Sam32 03-02-2009, 01:59 AM Oh, sorry Scott, what I meant was an OS CV engine that fit the specs for a an OS .15CV no matter what engine the parts came in, because on the parts list for the two CV engines the only different parts are the piston, sleeve, head, and endplate. But I feel at this point that I'm beating a dead horse because you can spend less than $10 more than it would cost to buy these parts and get an all-new .15. So I'm not confused about what I'm going to do anymore. Thanks again for the help.
ScottH 03-02-2009, 02:29 AM Not a problem, glad to have you in the series!
Benjie Wright 03-04-2009, 11:21 PM I'm Cheating-Just wanted to let everybody Know.
Mclin taught me that- he always said BOY just be honest
and let me do the teching, NOT TIM- he always finds little stuff.hehehehe RED RIIDEEEER AWAY.
Benjie Wright 03-05-2009, 03:24 PM OH YEAH--- SHUT UP SCOTTT. Later Man
