I would like to be the first to say we will all miss you very much Chuck. You have been a great friend to me and my family. Always considered you as part of my extended family. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family!!! I know your in a better place now...

Sad news for sure.

I never met Chuck (I always wanted too), but everything I heard about him was good. True Gentlemen.

This has probably been one of the toughest things I have had to write, but I am compelled as Chuck was one of my best friends, in and out of the quarter scale world.

I was fortunate to have had over a 20 year friendship with this man, dating back to the old Outlaw Hobby days in San Bernardino, CA. Those Saturday mornings were spent getting there early with him and Ross Rettig and pulling in to secure our pit spot. We would race hard and fight hard all day long and then when the checkered was thrown we would load up and head to dinner. Until the next time we would say.

Through the years we always had a great time. He then bought Lightening and I had no idea where that would take me. My journey with Chuck and quarter scale took off. I was fortunate to travel to many tracks across the country with him during this venture. We would have fun on the road and then I saw all the hard work that he put into this sport in the evenings and weekends. He loved quarter scale and the people in it.

He was a wonderful husband to Jan (our love and prayers are with you) and to me the best friend a guy could ask for. He always stood by me and now I have to stand strong in his honor.

Here is to the big Oreo cookie and Coke that we shared on more than one occasion.

You will be sorely missed. We love you Chuck.

You buddy,
Jim Dooley

Thank-you for starting this post Denny as all of you know that knew Chuck, he was one of the true givers of the sport. From buying Lightening from the people back east just to be more involved with it to just sponsoring and putting money up for what ever was needed for the club. He loved the sport. Just aweek ago, I went to his house to give him the(SIGN ART AWARD) trophy that he had recieved at our banquet in which he couldn't attend because he was not filling good enough to make the trip. To recieve this honor is for somebody that goes beyond the call of duty for the sport. He earned it just about every year. We will all miss him dearly out here on the west but I know he will be missed everywhere.Jim, I know how much he stood for you and Deb and would like to let you know that our family is here for you both! Talk to you as soon as we can. Godspeed to you Chuck.

I am extremely sorry to hear this news. The racing community we all know and love, has truely lost one of its greats. There are not too many people that will committ themselves to a hobby over a great deal of time. However, Chuck is a shining example of that. I have had the pleasure of racing with Chuck quite a few times. The thing I liked most about Chuck is that he is what we call "old school", meaning he couldnt care what his car looked like. He was there to race and if it meant rubbing fenders and knocking down walls, he wouldnt batt an eyelash! I wont lie, I loved that Gilligan hat too! He did a great deal for quarterscale racing here on the west coast and he was instrumental in the growth of our club here in the northwest.

Godspeed......you will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear about this,i couldn't beleave when i saw this posting,I will miss Chuck hes a great guy,and true to the sport,my dad (Bob Bates sr.),Brian, and Shon also want to give our prayers to Chucks family and friends,This is very sad to hear and i couldn't beleave it when i started reading, all i thought about when i read this posting was all the times we shared together and talked i enjoyed having Chuck at the track hes a great guy, friendly and a die-hard to the sport and helping keeping 1/4 scale alive, he also did a great job with Lightning when he owned it as well. I helped Chuck at the last race of the year in 2008 helping him with the set up and he let me race his GN car and we got it running alot better it was fast.

Chuck we all will miss you buddy, and i am sorry to hear this,it brings tears to my eyes thinking that you were sick and then you pass,it tells us how short life can really be and we never think about this happening. We all will miss you so much rest in peace, Bob Bates Jr. #99:thumbsup:

When I moved out to the west coast in 99 Chuck was one of the first guys to come
over and introduce himself and welcome me out here. We rubbed fenders alot through the years and he will be missed! You could always count on Chuck showing up and most of the time he would run 2 classes just to help the club. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Even more on Chuck: http://ccentral.sbccd.cc.ca.us/NewsLetter/index.php?Arch=ON&NewsID=1466&EntityID=2

Chuck somehow found time for everything; his family, his friends, church, the city, the community college, his business, and quarterscale racing. I don't know how he did it all but he did.

Goodbye and thanks.

This loss of a friend really hit me hard, a friend i've knowned since the early 80's. I met Chuck at Outlaw Motor Speedway in Highland California, which was a dirt track, i believe was the first Q -Scale dirt track. We raced together with with open motor rules, Those were good times! Chuck was always dedicated to the sport and went on to purchase Lightning race cars. He was always a positive and giving person.
He will be deeply missed. Todd Bishop

Just letting you all know we had a very nice Memorial for Chuck this afternoon. This man has done so much in his lifetime it is unreal. He had the place packed with people that he had touched in some way or another. From being a Track & Field Coach to helping out a D.A. run for office... And of course all of racers that are better people for knowing him. So i ask you all to think of him at your next race and dedicate a lap or 2 to him. He'll be watching us all doing what we love and routing each one of us on!!!

Miss ya Chuck...
