I have seen racers using a cell balancer as they charge and now I have some questions about this.

What balancer would be the best?
How is it powered and connected?
How offten should it be done?
It appears that the battery is being charged by the charger and the balancer is connect up seperatly.

Thanks for any help

You should look into the common sense RC balancer I saw Sean Cochran use these at the Snowbirds and they seemed simple and allowed you to charge through the power leads which is better.

Another way that is easy and less hassle is to get a balancer and just hook it up once the packs is charged that way if one cell is to high it will bring it down to the same voltage as the other one. You can then top off the pack again. Typically packs should stay in balance for a long period of time.

I use an electrifly by hobbico. It does active equalizing by charging through the equilizer and passive which is stand alone. You can use passive while charging. You can only charge I think 3.0 amps with the little adapters. You can buy the big adapters to go to 6.0 amps. Also f you run checkpoint lipo or team orion lipo you will need the checkpoint adapters. They have removable power and ground leads so the balancer has a two big plugs and the small one.

As far as equalizing. I generally do it every other race weekend. I run practice and then 2heats and 1 main. If I practice alot or if I am testing during the week I will equalize more often. Everybody has their own way of doing things though. My two cents.:dude:

Larry, forget the balancer and get a single cell and a 13.5 and come down and race at Rosewood.

What is your class weights?

Starting 13.5 single here with John, looking at 40 ounces with Rx pack. Yes we could go Lipo RX pack but just another accident that could happen.

I'm at 40.5 oz, several others are at 40.0, setting the weight at 40 or 41 with RX pack should be easy.

That sounds kinda heavy? Are you adding weight to come to that? I,ve tried both my SK car and my 4-cell 17.5 car with the 1 cell and their both around 36 oz. and were running 21.5 2 cell lipo at 38 oz. down here.

We are running 13.5 single cell at 36oz. People here are adding weight to make 36oz. I'm running a 300mah 7.4v lipo receiver pack (.70 oz) with the Novak 3amp Universal BEC (.30oz) to bring the voltage down to 6v. Some have run without the BEC, but I don't want to take a chance on messing up my servo or receiver.
