James Whitmore has died. No age was given. It was announced by his son today on "Celebrity Deaths". He was a nice guy, Grandfatherly type.

James Whitmore dies at 87; veteran actor brought American icons to life.
James Whitmore, the veteran Tony- and Emmy-winning actor who brought American icons Will Rogers, Harry Truman and Theodore Roosevelt to life in one-man shows, died Friday. He was 87.

Whitmore died of lung cancer at his home in Malibu, said his son, Steve. He was diagnosed with the disease a week before Thanksgiving.

The extremely versatile Mr. Whitmore was probably best known for his portrayals of historic American icons Will Rogers, Harry Truman and Theodore Roosevelt in solo stage shows. Among his dozens of television appearances, he played the leadership-obsessed spaceship captain in the Twilight Zone episode "On Thursday We Leave for Home."

Another great talent has left us. Well, 87 years is a pretty good run.

You know, the weird thing is that when I think of James Whitmore, I think of a shortlived ABC Sitcom called "Temperatures Rising". James Whitmore and Clevon Little together in a sitcom... and almost no one remembers it.

I remember they were dumb enough to replace James Whitmore with Paul Lynde the 2nd season...couldn't watch the show after that...

He was one of my favorites. Another actor dying of cancer!

He was also in an episode, in the first season of The Invaders.

He was one of the best character actors out there, and kept busy throughout his entire career.

My absolute favorite role of his is the terrific performance he turned out as the egomaniacal Captain Benteen in the Twilight Zone episode "On Thursday We Leave for Home". Not to mention his role as Admiral Halsey in Tora! Tora! Tora!.

I'm sad to hear of his passing. As I get older, 87 now seems too young to go. I'm glad he had such a full life and long career. He will be missed.

Sad. As with anyone when their life comes to an end.

Sorry to be a 'poop' as my wife usually calls me....
but shouldn't this be in Movies for Modelers?

And let's not forget Whitmore's memorable turn as the President of the Assembly in the original "Planet of the Apes"...

And let's not forget Whitmore's memorable turn as the President of the Assembly in the original "Planet of the Apes"...Forty years since that movie was made, and I never knew that was James Whitmore in ape drag. Guess I'll have to turn in my geek badges . . . again.

Yes, turn your papers in as you leave the thread. :p

Seriously, I loved this actor. I'm particularly fond of his role in The Shawshank Redemption.

I'm embarrassed to say I assumed he was already dead. And somewhat surprised that he was only 87. He looked like he was 50 when he was in THEM! in 1954.

You weren't the only one. I wasn't aware of him being in anything since his one man shows.

I agree, he always did look older than his true age. I thought he was in his eighties in Shawshank, but he was only 72. And he was only 32 in Them.

He did for Harry S. Truman what Hal Holbrook is still doing for Mark Twain. Another great talent gone, but not forgotten. :(

I've never seen his one-man shows but I understand they're on CD's or something so I sure like to see them. I hear they ARE great.
