I just saw the opening scene from James Cawley' Star Trek Phase 2 episode "Blood and fire". For a fan film, I was blown away by this effects shot!

Way better than all 4 hours of the last 2 Trek flicks I saw.

So...was that about the acting or the effects? :p

It would never work for today's audiences...

The effects are quite good. However, I just can't get into these 'fan' efforts. They seem so much like a desperate attempt to recapture what once was and as such are doomed to be compared to the original material and obviously fall far short of the mark. It also astonishes me that one would combine the resources-actors (sort of), sound, camera, lights, effects, props, etc. then attempt to replicate someone else s production instead of their own original work, which almost makes it come off as a parody. But, my personal tastes aside, I commend them on what looks to be a cut above the 'typical' fan film. That's just my take on it.

It's less of a fan film than most, considering they have David Gerrold, Dorothy Fontana, and a slew of original series actors aboard.

I thought the effects were actually pretty mediocre... I did much better all by myself 4-5 years ago. Overall I think the effort is a good one, but the original series itself had better looking effects, IMO.

I recently sat down and watched all of the episodes produced by the New Voyages/Phase II team and have noted progress in the effects with each episode. The effects in "Blood and Fire" are actually quite a bit better than the last episode - the shots of the Enterprise in the teaser are just marvelous and very pleasing to watch. To be honest, the teaser has so much action in it and the effects look so good, it's my favorite part of the episode.
