Quick question,
How do you know what pinion spur combo to run with what electric motor. Currently i am thinkin of putting a 19t pinion and a 86t spur with a peak 13 turn motor. on gearchart this pinion spur combo is 10.99 is this about right? how do you know what to run with different motors? What do you want the ratios at?

Most of it is from experence. Most cars/trucks have gearing recommendation charts. If you let us know what vehicle this is going in and what type of track you are running maybe we can give some recommendations.

they will go in a XXXT cr and aT4. The track is kind of tight off road one long straight(50 to 60 feet) , clay

What your are asking is kind of hard. The best thing for you is to run this combo at the track and see how you fair.

I've been out of the dirt game for a long while are these 2 or 4 wheel drive cars or trucks? Lipo, Nimh or Nicad batterys, Stock or aftermarket tires? Is you motor a single or double wind?

Shorty,

The simple answer is it's trial and error. In general you'd want to find someone who's run similar and get you in a starting spot.

Without that, about all you can do is run it, don't let it get too hot (run for a minute or two) and check the temps. If it's too hot to touch - you'll probably need a smaller pinion, or a larger spur.

There are just way too many factors involved for anyone to give you anything exact.

TRACTION and TIRE Size are huge factors, short tight straights will need lower gearing, if it's got a lot of LONG straights you can go a little taller (larger Pinion)

Some of the MFG's give you a rough idea on gearing on their respective web sites, but those too are just estimates, and your conditions and gearing will vary.

the 19 pinion sounds too big for a 13 turn motor. I'm running around a 14:86 with a 12 turn motor on a track with a 100 ft straight. It is better to start too small and go up, than start too big and cook the motor.

Suggested gearing on the XXX-T cr for a 13 turn motor is 82/20. If you look at page 20 of the user manual you will find gearing information. Here is the link to the manual on Losi's website (http://www.losi.com/Products/Support.aspx?ProdId=LOSK0077).

Here is a link to the user manuals on Team Associated's website (http://www.teamassociated.com/racerhub/support.htm#1:10electric)

Sounds like your gearing at least on the XXX-T should be fine, but as other's have stated already the factory recommended gearing should only be used as a reference or starting point. Depending on the layout, track surface, tires in use, brand of motor, driver behind the wheel, etc you will need to fine tune your gearing.

Too often I've heard drivers just ask what gear someone is running only to change to that gear and actually go slower (or burn up their motor). Unless you are using EXACTLY what the other racer is, you should always take their information with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen,

One more question article I read says you want your gering as close to 1:1 as you can get 1:1 with what the motor the fdr? I am really confused on this gearing thing are ther any articles anywhere that explain it.

I would suggest starting out with a 15 or 16 pinion, run it a couple of minutes and see how hot the motor is. I good stork motor would use a 21 pinion. High RPM stock motors I used to run would use a 19 tooth pinion.
