As was announced on several websites last week, most notably thedigitalbits.com and trekmovie.com, the first six Star Trek movies and the first season of the original series are being released on Blu-ray Disc sometime in early May to coincide with the release of the new film in theaters.

The six original series' cast movies will be the theatrical versions. They may be available as a set and separately, though this has yet to be announced.

The original series will be offered as both the original broadcast versions and the recent cgi effects version - both available via seamless branching on the same 50GB discs - and both having benefit of full 4K restoration and HD mastering.

It will be nice to see the original effects and hear the original theme music in high definition if one chooses.

The original announcements are here, including cover art for the European releases.

Well, as with most weighing in on this news, I wish the features were going to be the directors' cuts, where those exist -- especially for the first film. I didn't really think the changes to the sixth one added much to it, and at least one made the movie a tiny bit worse, but I wouldn't balk at either version (and it's hardly one of my favorites, but I'll not go on that rant again -- at least not now). And I really am looking forward to seeing the remastered series on Blu-ray, but with the way they've priced previous sets, it will probably go in my Netflix queue only for a while.

I haven't sprang for any of the previous TOS sets on DVD, I might have to grab this one, or at least rent it. Having the option of viewing the original or CGI-enhanced episodes is a great choice imho.

I think these would really be worth having. I missed several of the remastered shows, but the ones I did see were pretty nice as they didn't seem to go overboard with the new effects, just make them better. Wish there was a way to go in and paste a CG head of Shatner and Montalban over the stunt guys' fight scenes in engineering though. Think you'd need ILM for that however (lol)!

It's official.

The first season to be released on April 28th with both the original broadcast and cgi "enhanced" versions available via seamless branching.

The theatrical versions of the six original cast movies follow on May 12th.

The following is from TrekMovie.com:

Full details and box art on each set below.

STAR TREK® – THE ORIGINAL SERIES - SEASON ONE BLU-RAY
[April 28 - $118.00 US / $136.00 Canada]

http://trekmovie.com/images/merchandise/STTOS_S1_BRD_3D_Salesview_tt.jpg

Star Trek’s first foray on Blu-ray fitting starts with the first season of Star Trek The Original Series on a seven disc set, including all 29 first season episodes and loads of special features. The first season Blu-ray release features ’seamless branching’ technology that finally provides viewers the ability to see each remastered episode with either the newly enhanced digital effects or the original special effects. You can also choose to listen to the newly enhanced soundtrack (7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio) or the original one (in glorious mono!).

As part of the special features, six episodes feature “Starfleet Access” bonus content, which provides special pop-up trivia and picture-in-picture video commentaries. The set also includes an interactive tour of the starship Enterprise, Billy Blackburn’s rare on-set home movie footage, a featurette on the Remastered project, and much more. All of these features were on The hybrid HD-DVD/DVD release in 2007 (note: the ‘Starfleet Access’ feature for "Galileo Seven" is not listed in the press release, but that may just be an error, we are checking). However, the set does not appear to include some of the features that were on the DVD side of the HD-DVD/DVD release, including the History channel special Beyond the Final Frontier and the ‘Trek Connections’ featurette. Like the HD-DVD release, the set also includes almost all the special features available on the standard DVD set released in 2004, with the notable exception of the ‘Red Shirt Diaries’ Easter Eggs (which weren’t on the HD-DVD set either). The Okuda text commentaries from the 2004 DVD set are also missing, but the Okudas participated in the "Starfleet Access" features.

It is also worth noting that this set is retailing for almost half of what the HD-DVD set was original sold for. Plus there is a collectible bonus of a free exclusive Sulu action figure from Diamond Select Toys (fans pay only shipping and handling charges). All in all this set looks to be exactly what fans have been asking for since the Star Trek Remastered project started in 2006.

STAR TREK®: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SEASON ONE is a seven disc set presented in the original 4:3 aspect ratio with English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, English Original 2.0 Mono, Spanish 2.0 Mono and French 2.0 Mono sound. No word on subtitles yet, but we are checking. The total running time is 24 Hrs., 20 Min.

STAR TREK: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE COLLECTION BLU-RAY
[May 12 - $104.99]

http://trekmovie.com/images/merchandise/ST_7PK_3D_BR_t.jpg

The ‘Original Motion Picture’ Blu-ray collection includes the first six “Star Trek” films, which have been digitally remastered in high definition. All the new Blu-ray transfers are based on the original theatrical releases. With the exception of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the previously released first DVD versions of each film were the ‘theatrical versions’ followed by a second ’special edition’. And in the case of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, there was only a single ‘Directors’ version released on DVD. Special care has been given to the Blu-ray version of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which has been ‘fully restored’ in a process similar to Paramount’s recent Blu-ray edition of The Godfather. Director Nicholas Meyer tells us that the Wrath of Khan negative "was in terrible shape" which is why it needed extensive restoration. All six films have new 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio.

Each film has a brand new commentary track from noted experts and Star Trek fans, in addition to commentaries from the previous release (except for TMP, which only has the new commentary). The set has a total of over 14 hours of special features, including 2 ½ hours of all-new material. Each film has a number of brand new special featurettes in HD, plus a ‘Library Computer’ function (Blu-ray’s Java function for additional pop-up trivia and information), and a ‘Star Trek IQ’ link to BD-Live. The new set contains almost all the extra features from the previous 2-disk special DVD editions of each film, except for the Okuda text commentaries (which are likely superseded by the new ‘Library Computer’ feature). There are also three special features on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Director’s Edition DVD, that aren’t in the new set (but maybe those will be in a possible future Blu-ray TMP Director’s Edition).

The collection also includes a bonus disc entitled “Star Trek: The Captains’ Summit” that features a 70-minute exclusive round table discussion hosted by Whoopi Goldberg in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes share candid moments and intimate details about life on the set.

The STAR TREK: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE COLLECTION Blu-ray discs are presented in 1080p high definition with English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD, French and Spanish audio and English, English SDH, French, Spanish & Portuguese subtitles.

agree to disagree with you on this one. the added scenes in 6 really underscored the level of conspiracy between col. west, adm cartwright and the romulan ambassador

in other news...it looks like my excuse for not getting into BR just vaporized...

I hate the addition of flashes during the mindmeld, though, it breaks the tension of what had been a riveting moment.

Not that I won't buy it again, of course ...

Although it seemed to fit the movie pretty well, I always disliked the music for VI. Well most of it anyway. The constant use of a modified "Mars:The Bringer of War" by Gustav Holst was a little annoying. I really liked the closing theme and the subtle reference to Horners' them for Spock from II & III.

Did any of that make sense?

Anyway, I cannot wait to see these films in glorious 1080p. Especially Nick Meyers' restoration of WOK.

Sorry,
I must have mentally blocked those (Ironic, no?) I agree with that point

I always felt so bad for Spock that he had to force that meld on his protoge and in public.

I never saw those flashes until the 2-disc DVD of VI came out. All of the other additions to that film had been included in all other releases of it. From VHS to DVD.

I have them, and checked that long ago, because I too was startled by their appearance in the film when watching the 2-disc version.

I have no plans to move to Blu-ray. I moved from Beta,to VHS, to RCA Selectavision, to DVD. I will wait for the release of a flash drive type version of the videos.

I might add...I'm really stoked about the movies being released in Dolby True HD. If it's a good audio transfer, the score and effects should be mesmerizing!:woohoo:
