View Full Version : A chance to promote QSAC
TerryI#6 01-19-2009, 01:06 AM I was asked by a board member of our race track here in Cedar Rapids called Hawkeye Downs to see if there would be any interest from the 1/4 scale guys racing on the 1/4 mile track. We would be racing on a Friday night you would have to have a personal transponder. They broad cast their races on the radio and over the internet so we would have a good sized audience. I believe they seat about 5,000 folks in the stands. You can check out the track on their website www.hawkeyedownsspeedway.com. Also I was told the drivers stand would be on top of a small building in the infield. We would have free admission the night of the race and we would be racing for trophies.

jeffdavis38 01-19-2009, 01:23 AM That would be a great deal Terry. How many local guys do you have in that area. This could help get some new blood in the area.
ScottH 01-19-2009, 01:26 AM WOW can you say gearing?!?!?
Sounds like fun. I do have a question. You say the drivers stand will be in the infield? I hope you mean the infield of the big track and not the one you guys will be racing on. I can see you guys spinning around with the cars. :D That could be a competition with in the race, last one to fall off the stand is the winner. :D:D:D
TillRodsFly 01-19-2009, 01:49 AM WOW can you say gearing?!?!?

I was thinking the same thing! LOL :freak:<---what I would look like after the race!
jeffdavis38 01-19-2009, 01:58 AM LOL, Thats part of the test.
hopper61250 01-19-2009, 10:06 AM Terry,
I'm thinking that just racing on the front straightaway were the 1/2 mile and 1/4 tracks meet would be a better show....closer to the grandstand so the race fans can get a better view. Watching 1/4 scale cars on a 1/4 mile track is only slightly more interesting than watching Indy cars on a road course or waiting for paint to dry.

willyplankhead 01-19-2009, 11:49 AM gear it to the moon and dont get to dizzy that would be the 1/4 scale version of dega probly would need to pull the plates off to get a decent speed or it would be like watching paint dry. no stagger turn your dual rate down to 10% and hold on !!!
TerryI#6 01-19-2009, 12:21 PM I have to be honest I haven't attended a race at this track since it was dirt in the 80's. If you look at the areal view on the web site you can kinda make out some buildings in the infield. I thought the same thing as far as everyone spinning in circles trying to keep up with their own car. If there is enough interest in putting on a show I'm sure we can work out the details. We can't be spinning in place because after 2 laps I would be the first one to loose my lunch.:freak: Larry has the right idea we want to keep the action close to the crowd. I can say from experience its something else racing in front of thousands of people.
hopper61250 01-19-2009, 01:19 PM Terry,
When are you going to Bob's again?
Larry
TerryI#6 01-19-2009, 02:04 PM Hi Larry,
Hopefully pretty soon. I have to make all of the changes to the car that we talked about and when I got that done I was going to give you guys a call. It might be the first week of next month. I'm going out of town next week.

IHAUL 01-19-2009, 04:13 PM glqsr tried racing at a 1/4 mile track in south bend a few years ago . 3 cars were TOTALED in the first hour . 1 frame was in 3 pieces , Randy Brown did make it ok with a spotter . they clocked him at about 66 mph . faster than most of the real cars
BIGSHOW 01-19-2009, 10:24 PM been there many times!!!! it is a great facility but.....it would take alot of cars to put on a great show for the folks in the stands! was there any mention of possible dates??? i wouldnt mind goin back to my old stompin grounds for a few days!!
BIGSHOW 01-19-2009, 10:32 PM hey Terri as i recall there is a pretty good size hump on the quarter mile track. one of the straight aways is connected to the 1[2 mile track and the hump is where the transition to the 1/4 mile track starts...i would ask if that has been fixed before we get to far on this.. im not sure we could make the transition with these cars unless it has been repaired. it was pretty large as i remember.
TerryI#6 01-19-2009, 10:39 PM There hasn't been any dates set as of yet. They wanted to know how many would absolutely show up. I said I would put the word out there for them. If we can put on a good show they will have us back for another one. They put on special events either before the real cars race or as an intermission is what he told me. I don't know if you know this or not, but we also have the best track around for sprinters and we have one big race there a year. This track was built for sprint cars, high banks and its a bowl. I can let you know when that race comes around.
