View Full Version : Info on brushed motor!!!
msave 01-16-2009, 08:29 PM My son raced a mod truck, brushless sidewinder with lipo. Although he did real well, and has been racing for a while. I am also building him a stock, I have a novak gtx with a team tekin 19t motor, that was only handed out to team guys. It was hand wound, and new brushes, with comm turn. My question is how to PROPERLY break it in? I have an Ice charger with motor break in fearure, but what volts, how long, any other secrets? I need to know the BEST way voltage, time wise and whatever else.
Thanks:dude:
OvalmanPA 01-16-2009, 09:21 PM After cutting a stock motor I re-serrate the brushes and typically run the motor with a fan attached for 30 seconds at 3 volts. Seems to work well. Of course the serration depth and style would probably make a difference in how long you break in for but I wouldn't go over 3 volts on break in.
hankster 01-16-2009, 09:25 PM A lot of brushed motor info is available in the on-line version of the Motor Black Book - http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=126994

Hankster- That is alot of info, and believe it or not, I read most all of it. Now absorbing it, is a differnt story. That's why I bookmarked it. Are there any Big Jim books out there anymore, and have they been republished or where can I get one.
Guys like you both are what makes this site the best, tons of info, especially for newbies!! I hope we can continue this for all the youngsters in the hobby, that is up and coming, and will keep the hobby alive, when we are all gone.
Great job guys!!!!!!!!!!!!
hankster 01-16-2009, 11:14 PM There might be some used ones on eBay or Amazon. When Jim died his estate pretty much forced me to stop publishing the book.

Most brushes you buy have some sort of grooves called serrations in the face of them. There are companies that make a tool that attaches, usually to the end of an old motor, that spins and creates these serrations in the brush face. It helps to be able to reuse a set of brushes so you don't have to buy a new set every time you cut the motor. Hope that helps.

The one I have is made by Racetech which i believe isn't in business anymore. However........I believe Integy makes one and is in the neighborhood of $35-$40. I believe theirs can both serrate and cut brushes. There are probably others out there but I don't know any names for sure.
