it has a fuel pump next to carb can that be taken off and gas line run directly into the carb at where the pump line goes ? surges at high speed when govenor opens it seems to run like its stuck very rich black smoke out the exhaust and chugging sounding so i reved it up by hand on throttle linkage and it corrected its self ?so im puzzeled otherwise a very strong cast iron engine also have a brand new carb on a 16 hp ohv would i be able to switch em ?16 ohv to 14 hp ohv ??

Hmmm kind of confused here. It corrected itself or it didnt? If it did, sounds like something was stuck in a passage and cleared itself. If not then something stuck in a passage. Maybe float sticking a little.

was surgeing untill i <<<revved it up>>> -----then it cleared up ------- , .. can i take the fuel pump off ??? and run it without one??? if not will the 16 hp engines carb fit the 14 hp engine ??? sorry for the confusion (14 hp ohv engine sat out side for 10+ years and still runs halfway decent except for surges now and then)

Most generally you cant take the fuel pump off and make it run without one. I believe it is cause the tank sits lower then the carb and it wont feed to the carb right. As far as the carb, the one on the 16 might let in a little to much gas and flood it out. Unless you rebuild the 16 carb, but I think you will still have problems. But if you do all that might as well rebuild the 14 carb and keep using it. Hope that kind helps.
