I started up update the list, as it changed a couple times this morning...but it was easier to just leave the direct link to the list!

I notice ALL of the updates I saw were listed as APPROVED 12/31/08 except ONE that was listed on 1/14/09

That list has no reference to a type of class, they are just the MOST RECENT Lipo 'approvals', which should cover EVERYTHING submitted by the 12/31/08 approval date cut off.

Click on the link to the ROAR website to see the entire list. (It can be sorted by date and a couple other sort protocols)

True it is $220 street price, but that is actually less expensive than the two SMC 28C 5000 hardcase LiPos I (and other guys I race with) have been using in electric 1/8th scale which, together, come to $260 street price. We can hardly expect them to approve the $80 to $100 Zippy packs from HobbyKing that so many people use. Also true that since prices have come down, there are less expensive alternatives for people who would want to use the two pack setup (ProMatch comes to mind, for use in the Caster buggy), but not everyone is going to have a car where two 2S packs will fit well. Or if they fit, they may still want the simplicity of using a single pack where possible.

I know the list is not class specific. I am just pleased that they actually approved a 4S pack. That can only really be for electric 1/8th. It won't fit in any other [ROAR] class of car, not would it be legal for any other [ROAR] class of car.

I am not about to go out and buy one, but it it further legitimizes the 1/8th electrics and makes the battery decision easier for some friends of mine who are working on conversions over the winter to be used this spring when we race outdoors again.

The list is $299, the street price is $220 looking at Stormer which is normally a low priced dealer. Guys around here have been using $100 5000mAh 4S Zippy packs with much success. With the HP the 1/8 scale motors make, you don't need a high $$$$ super-duper matched packs.

I know this will sound biased but there is no way 100 dollar 5000/4S pack can have the same quality materials that will provide high cycle life.

When making Lipos materials are very important. In our high C rate packs we use 100% Japanse materials which offer the best performance and cycle life. Our 24C packs use 60% Japanese and 40% Chinese materials so this makes for a cheaper pack with good peformance and o.k. cycle life.

We could easily drop the percenatge of Japanese materials to reduce cost some more but then you encounter shorter cycle life.

So I know it's not always true that you get what you pay for but when it comes to batteries it tends to be true.

If the zippy packs are soft case I would not even try them in an RC car, they could be easily damaged and become a safety hazard. I am totally against using an airplane/heli pack in an rc car, when they crash there is to many ppl close to a possible saftey hazard like turn marshalls, etc. Unlike airplane/heli which would crash in an open field. I also agree with SMC on performance of a cheaper lower C rating Lipo in part but I think they are also cheaper because construction may not hold up well or be safe in an rc car. You dont need a high C rating as much in 1/8buggy/truggy electric because a 5000mah 4S will get u 15+ minutes of run time with a fast motor like the NEU 1512 2.5 motor. 1/8buggy/truggy electric is gaining in popularity. We need losi to get their 5S approved next. I am happy roar is doing 4S packs so far.

When are we going to see SMC 3-4-5-6 S lipos??

I found the losi 5S lipo for $224 so I bet I can do better on the losi 4S hank!

We are studying the market for 4S Lipos and we will release some in the near future.

We want to do a 5500/25C+/4S1P hardcase for the 8th scale buggies and a 6500+/25C+/4S2P for Truggies as they ROAR rules allow up to 52mm in height so that should fit in a Truggy.

FYI -- I have two of the 2S zippy 4000 25C packs -- Red HARDCASE (similar visually to many others on the market), with 'ribs' on the bottom for TC's, etc.. So far, they work just fine for club/local (Dirt Oval and/or Offroad) racing where ROAR approval doesn't matter.

I fully agree with you about NOT using soft case batteries. The only serious problem with a LiPo pack locally was with one such pack the was partially "ejected" from a car in a wreck and the pack was damaged (sort of scraped through the packaging on one corner because the driver tried to keep going) - lots of sparks, smoke and excitement - NO BIG FLAMES, but it did scare folks...

The zippy pack is not a 25C pack which is why it's cheaper. I will soon have C rate tests done on many different packs. You will see that your not always getting what you pay for.

Bottom line is all Lipos and sub-c cells for that matter will take a charge and will discharge. So if your the type of racer who just enjoys racing and your not worried about performance than the cheaper Lipos are a good solution. We do have a 4100/24C ROAR legal price that has street price of 65.00 which is a fair price for a true capacity and C rate pack that can be bought throw distribution channels.

Danny,

I always use your SMC batteries and think there great for racing.

I would also have to say that the high price lipos and the new generation lipos are about the same in performance.

Now I run two cell configuration just to clarify.

Try this cell and do a test.
Getting super results from a cheaper cell.
I think you will find this to be true...

Glad you had good luck with them. I don't buy SMC batteries any more.

I bought some of the first 28C red cased side exit batteries and they worked fine (still do). But every SMC pack I've bought since then has swelled for no apparent reason. The swelled 2S packs no longer fit in some of my cars. I'd rather get packs that don't swell with age.

I know if you store your packs outside in a trailer, or above 80 degrees
the packs will swell.

The 40C SMC packs that swelled were stored in the same ammo can as the SMC 28C packs that are still in perfect condition. No other packs I own have swelled when storeed in ammo cans in my cellar (on the floor, so coolest part of the cellar). My cellar is the coolest place in the house in the summer. (Coolest in winder too, since I don't heat the cellar.)

I've read that tmenet document (like last summer). Extrapolation from their storage temperature table: batteries stored in a household freezer will deteriorate even slower than those in the refrigerator section. Was skeptical abouit that so I asked Jeff at ProMatch about it (they were his 4S packs I wanted to store over the winter) and he said it was a good idea, so long as I avoided condensation when I took them out to warm up. Those 4S packs I stored in the freezer last winter have won me two 1/8th electric late model races.
