Thanks much for the fine photos Russ,

Anyone else think that the 69 Buick looks a bit odd?
Looks like the wheelbase is a bit short or some other flaw that results in a chubby look?

Also ,,, The pic on the packaging doesn't have the blacked out grill .. I couldn't find anything on the web without the blacked out grill with one bright horizontal bar. Any 69 Buick know-it-alls out there ( in the GOOD sense of the phrase) ?

I don't have a GL '69 Mach yet so that puppy will be mine, also that new Challenger looks sweet in black / flat black.

Here is a picture of a 69 Skylark Custom convertible from the Old Car Manual website, just happens to be a yellow one too...looks like the GL one IS too short and fat...there isn't enough length to the 1/4s, not enough length between the rear of the front wheel opening and door, same between the rear of the door and front of the rear wheel opening, and a tad too short in front overhang. It also does not represent the rear side window kickup well in the casting, making the whole mid-section appear too tall. As for the blackout grille, the 69 Buick catalog shows a GS coupe with one but, I have seen photos of them not blacked out, not sure which is technically correct....I sure wish the diecast companies would stop trying to make yesterday's cars conform to today's car's proportions! I was looking forward to this casting and I am glad to see it made but having it not exactly correct is disappointing.

Nice pic of the Skylark to compare against Jim.. Yup,, short lengths in the areas you mentioned and the door itself is not wide enough either.

Great analysis, Jim...and thanks for the comparison pic. Such a beautiful car in 1:1 so this is a real kick in the biscuits.
It looks like they used the lines of the '69 Skylark alright but made it fit the measurements of a '69 Camaro.
This is gonna show on your report card, Mr. Greenlight! :D

I like that color combo on the '69 stang. Too bad GL still hasn't redone the Magnum 500 weels though. They still look too big.

Awesome pics Russ !! I think the wheels on the 69 Mustang look just fine , the 'correct' size new wheels on the 67 Mustang look too small ...
I also agree the proportions of the Buick look too short .. & the headlight area looks off too ...

We will have agree to disagree. I think these wheels are much better proportioned. Remember, back in the day, most of these cars didn't have any larger than 15" rims. I think we have gotten too used to seeing big rims. Although you can't see it in the photos, the width is much more realistic as well.

I give GL a lot of credit for working on the wheels.

Upon my first glance at the GL Buick I noticed that the front fender is way too short, both in front of the wheel and behind it. Seeing Jim's photo confirms that. Dang!

Why can't the designers see these obvious proportion problems when they have the soft prototype in front of them?

As soon as the incorrect body proportions are locked into the diecast tooling, they are there forever (or at least until the tools wear out.)

If ever my old boss's slogan of "Get it right the first time!" applied, it's to diecast tooling. Bummer.

Anyway, for Hollywood on Wheels fans, this Buick was immortalized by Lily Tomlin's white over blue coupe in 9 to 5:

I had a 68 Skylark in Bamboo Cream which was a tad softer yellow then this Buick Shown. 68's were virtually identical except the front fender slits on my year are horizontal instead of fish gills. I even took it to Fest in Chicago the first year we had it there. The the roads leading to the show were less than to be desired!

The car looks fine in the hardtop version. Not sure if it's the camara angle or not but it does look a little short between the door and the front fender AND the door and the rear fender.

The chrome trim around the top of the front lights also plays with my eyes perspective. This version sure looks a bit "too thick" and that too may make the car look stubby. I'm going to wait to see it in blister form and decide. Photos taken in that scale can often play tricks on you.

I'm just tickled they did it!
