About 1989, while attending the Knoxville Nationals, there was a display of quarter-scales. I had never seen anything like it ...I was completely intrigued. I had no knowledge of any R/C racing in my area . Remember , home computers and the internet, were still 5 years or more away, so finding out information was a steep task. A couple of years went by...I finally walked into a hobby shop and started asking questions. I was told that there was no quarter-scale racing in the area but that tenth scale electric was popular. I ran tenth scale for a year or so and a off hand comment to Jim Hock about wanting to get into quarter-scales led me to Leo Mills. Leo got me into quarter-scale and was my mentor. I ran my first race in 1992 with a RACO GN Challenger at MPR. We would race at MPR on Saturdays ,getting home about 11pm and be on the road by 7am to Cedar Rapids on Sundays. It was about 400 miles of travelling every weekend and a lot of fun....it still is.

while racing my 1/10 scale, seeing Walt's 1/4 scale in his store, got interested, 2008 seeing Freddies 1/4 in the store. watching 1/4's racing at Freddies, bought my at the end of the season.
Have not raced it yet but ran about 150 laps at Freddies with others on the track.

I got into 1/4 scale back in 1986. I work part time for Merl Hayes who owned Hobbytown. He sold me my first 1/4 scale which was a Raco and we held out first 1/4 scale race in a parking lot. When QSAC was first put out as a club, Me and Merl was co-director for the midwest and held our first qsac race in Lincoln, (again a parking lot) at the State Fair grounds where qsasc gave $500 to add to the purse. I believe this was in 1988 or 89

Put alot of parking lot racing in differant towns in Nebraska which when Hobbytown started the QSAR/Nebr.

Join QSAC in 1989 (i believe) and membership cost is the same as it is today

My first big was race was at the WCM Nationals in Buffalo where it was all sprint cars. Big learning leason here as I started in the H feature.

I raced at Outlaw Raceway Park, MRP, Knoxville Nationals, Riverside Speedway, Algona Iowa

Times have changed but the fun continues.

I started in 2004. At that time I was racing 10th scale pan cars at Walt's He had a 1/4 scale in the Hobby Shop I checked it out but didn't really give it much thought. Bob T. bought one and I went to see him run his and it wasn't but a few months after that, that I got my first WCM..... Been hooked ever since and havn't touched 10th scale since then.

Raced R/C's since 79 in the Midwest, finally got tired of the battery/motor war in 92 and bought a used QuickDraw GN. Ran that the first year, then ran a Thunderbolt in 93, then a WCM until 08 when I bought a Lightning. Moved to AZ in 99 took a few years off from all racing and began racing 10th scale again but made a few appearances at the Super Nats in Vegas. Started back full time in 1/4 scale may of 08. I have always enjoyed the fellowship and competition of 1/4 scale racing!

Intresting stories. I had been racing 1/10th oval since the days of JJ's in Madison Hights Michigan. That was about 1987 and by 90 - 91 had won the IROC sieries with my good friend Bob Hendry who really should have won. I only edged him out by 3 points. We became real good friends and he asked if I wanted to work on a real late model car at Flatrock speedway. We have done that since and about 3 years ago our drive desided to call it quits.

We knew this day was coming so about in 1997 or 1998 we were walking around the Royal Oak Grand national when I got my first glimps of the Quarter pounders. I knew that I was going to get one at some point, it was just a matter of when.

I had seen the 2000 ROGN again and said that when our driver retired, we would both get one. I started a bit earlier than that, but only about a year sooner. Bob just bought one and we are looking forward to running this year.

I've been doing Quarter Scale since the beginning of 2006, but I had the car in 2005. I only drove it maybe 2 or 3 times in that year. What a blast. I need to sell all my 1/10th scale stuf so I can get more 1/4 scale stuff...lol

Better class of people too, more fun, and i just like the look on peoples faces when I tell them I race an R/C car that is about 4 feet long and goes 45 or 55mph on a real big track...

I started racing RC in 1985-86. While racing 1/10th scale oval in the fall of 2000 @ Classic Hobbies, Akron Ohio I saw my first Q-scale car and race. I knew from that point on 1/10th scale was over for me. I got my first ¼ Scale in March of 2001 and never looked back.

Quarter Scale racers are a unique bunch! The best!! I met my best friends through Q-Scale racing.

I’m having a blast!.

I just started racing 1/4 scale cars this year
thanks to Jimmy Phillips (aka johnny hacksaw on hobbytalk)

i live in Ingalls where there is a track about 5 blocks from my house.
I've been out there to watch every year since the track was built.
jim told me over the 1/10th scale season winter months
that if i made it out to the track i could run one of his cars
and i was hooked.
i raced just a handfull of times 2008 year
but will race more this year for sure.

i've raced 1/10th scale for 20 years
and like it very much
but don't let the size of the cars fool ya
they are cheaper in the long run
wich was my concern.

1/10th scale i've worked hard in to be competitive
1/4 wow it's like starting over in r/c racing
some things are the same but set up
is another.........

this is all about set-up

I got into 1/4 scale back in 85-86 When Steve Skellenger and John Rahe built a Dirt oval for Raco Jackrabbits that we all turned into sprint cars...What a Blast that was..

Soon after my Dad and Brother got into 1/4 scale (Bob Bates Sr,and Jr.)...

I have left the hobby a few times but always seem to come back...

My first experience with a quater scale car was at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. I was there for the Hooters 500 and was walking through the parking lot when I saw a quater scale body in the front window of a motor home. I had read about them in model car publications but this was my first sight of a real quater scale body. No chassis under it but I knew at that moment I was going to get into quater scale racing. Bought my first car used and went from there, it was a WCM, one of the older cars with a full cage. My real love was a sprint car and my first actual quater scale sprint car race was at Knoxville Iowa in 1996. After getting into 1/4 scale I sold all of my smaller scale cars and have never looked back. Best group of racers I have ever encountered. Its the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Don't believe it was a driver as it was out in the general parking. Body was not the best paint job I had ever seen but it was the size of the car that I was impressed with.
Having race smaller scales for years I was looking for something where the playing field was a bit more level. Could not keep up with the motor and battery wars of tenth scale and I had already done 1/8th. scale gas years before. RC Model Cars (now out of publication ) had articles every issue. I had suscribed and was excited to get every issue. As I read about the rules and due to the level playing field, I was Hooked. And the rest is a lot of old history.

Was visiting oldest son in Birmingham AL, looked for 1/10th scale tracks in area to run and found Lagoon Park. Went there and couldn't believe the size of cars. Went home looked up QSAC on internet to see if there was a track closer to home and the rest is history.

Now my 2 sons an I race.

When I first started 1/4 scale racing in 2003, I have been racing 1/10 oval for over 18 years. My cousin Frank was running his sportsman car on a practice day at the newly built Ingalls Motor Speedway. I seen theese things running around the track and that was all it took. I knew I had to have one for myself. I bought my first car off of Todd Holloway, and the rest is history, as they say...

I was racing 1/18th scale at a private track for 2 years and the guy decided to close it up. I was going to sell the stuff off and keep the backyard stuff until a freind of mine went over to Algona Ia. track to race his electrics. I went over to race my 1/18th and was blown away byy the quarter scales. I had to have one. One of the local racers had one for sale and let me take his around the track he said I could race it the next night as long as I paid the entry fee. I ended up buying it from him and raced it 3 or 4 nights last year.

I think I was 12-13 years old (1988-89) ... Racing my Gold Tub RC-10 off road at Outlaw Hobbies in Highland, CA... Pops had just bought an old Raco off someone and came to me and said "You know Den, It's probably going to be cheaper for me to just buy you a 1/4 scale and have you run it, then it would be for us to keep up with the motor of the week / battery of the week if we want to be competetive in the 10th scale..." So, by the end of that year there i was with a R/C car that's as big as me, if not bigger, and going to town... We had a good sized dirt oval out there....

Now here I am 20 years later, just about to walk out the door to start our 2009 Season.... Gotta Love It!!!!

Thanks Pops for getting me into this, wouldn't change it for the world!!!

:woohoo:  :woohoo:  :woohoo:

I started racing 1/10 scale in 1983 and in 85 I seen the WCM sprint ad in RC Car action mag following a phone call, I ordered my first 1/4 scale sprintcar. It was when they put the RC10 gold shocks on with a torsion bar suspension rather then the coil springs.
It was a couple of month's later I heard of a track in Limerick,Pa (Near valleyforge). The track was owned by latemodel driver / speedshop owner Kenny Parsons. The track closed the end of the season.

I am thinking about getting back into this hobby after being away for a few years....But, here's my story...

I was introduced to 1/4 scale wayyyyy back when WCM was making cars with full interiors and the engines were front mounted. I had "Waldo" a full figure driver in a race suit and full face helmet strapped into a race seat holding a steering wheel made from a peanut butter jar lid.

Ken Higdon was the person I blame for this. He sold WCM and Raco in Vegas....For the longest time there were only a couple of us running in town...

Then came the Super Nationals...I have had the pleasure of racing with the Arrows guys from Phoenix, Cheeks, Love, Rhae's, Skellenger and many more....Best of all has been Ron Schoeb, who I ALWAYS liked to stuff into the wall...LOL....

Some cars I have raced:
WCM: Stock cars, Sprints
Raco: Stock Cars, Jack Rabbit
PRC: Stock Car
Arrow: Super Mod
T&S: Sprint
Schoeb built GTP

Wish I had them all.....

I'm thinking about getting into Sprints again....Watchout Schoeb....lol

I started racing 1/10th indycar at hobbytown in indianapolis around 1995. I raced around and moved into different classes until 1998/9. Then i found out about 1/4 scale. I attended 1 race, and ordered one the next day. I waited all summer for the car to arrive, and when it did, i competed in the last points race of the year. I think i finished last.......serveral laps down! I havent raced 1/10th scale since.
