I noticed that last year after X-mass they clearenced their SCX track sets & asessories, this year I told myself i'd buy a set after X-mass. Lo & behold not a single one, just extra track pieces.

My question is...Do you think they held'em back this year to keep from loosing money on them, they're not cheap but I think Target is.

This is my theory.

Some Targets have quite stocking the SCX sets.

The SCX compact sets and cars are very popular. Could be they are just selling well. I went to a Target this summer and bought the DTM 2 pack of cars, then found out fellow 1/43rders were looking for them too. I went back the next day and they were all gone.

They had full inventory of the 3 sets days before X-mass, same as last year.
Last year they went on clearance the day after.

Same with those 100.00 Revell helicopters too, exact same senario.

Sumpin' fishy @ Target...

They did this sometime during the year in 2008. They clearance them, redo the toy section and then restock with new 1/43 SCX track and cars. I personally think that if they clearanced the cars and tracks that were left from Christmas, just wait, there will be more showing up here in 2009. SCX has a commitment to deliver the compact line to Target and allow them to sell the 1/32 online. Until that commitment is terminated, I don't think they will stop having the sets, cars, and track pieces available.

Isn't it surprising how stores will not stock electric race sets, yet when they do, they sell out quickly? Have you ever seen race sets lay around the store for any length of time? Did you ever find out about a race set, only to find it was already sold out everywhere?

Before Christmas, Costco had a large stack of Mattel sets. I thought there was no way they would sell all of them. They were all gone at least a week before Christmas.

It's all about the shelf space. If they are making $50 for every $100 in that space, we will still have SCX. But if they figure out a better way that makes $55 per $100 for that same amount of space, then no more SCX at Target. It would be nice to think that the success of SCX in Target would make them expand the section into 1:32 as well, but as much shelf space as slot car tracks use, it's just gonna be hard to see that happening in a numbers based department store. I'm just glad they are carrying them, and hope to get a set one day when I stop spending my extra cash on HO stuff.

I think ToysRus had the best thing going for a while. I thought the display case full of cars, with the tickets hanging was a great idea. Part of HOs problem is that they're small. The ToysRus had it set up for more display room and less theft. I've seen slot cars go in stores on the shelf or on the peg. Stores quit carrying them because they magically disappear. I hope they bring that back, or someone else does. Buying online has its perks, but it really takes me back to walk into a store and press my nose to a display case and dream of the possibilities of a new slot car.

I'm not sure I understand the conspiracy theory. Maybe they just happened to sell all three sets before Christmas.

Hi All:

Having worked for Target over a span of twenty years ( off and on ), 99% of the time, the items just sold out. I was planning on doing the same, wait until after christmas, to buy a set, no luck.

Still knowing people working their, Target slashed hours big time. The only area not really affected was Toy's and Electronics. During the holidays, atleast 4 to 5 full time people work in toys alone. Their job is to push the toys out and place them anywhere, that is why the last week the place look's like hell. The last week, this year, at the Target I go to, no back stock at all, the back room was empty. You can see the stockroom from a door by men's wear.

The only way to get a set after christmas is to hope someone returns one.

I would bet by the new reset, SCX race sets will return. At Target, if it sells buy 10 more.
Of course that depends if SCX can make enough sets to re-stock. I'm sure, that at the rate they were selling, Targets buyer, has already place another order before christmas.

I have gone to atleast 6 Targets after christmas, and no cars or sets. The only thing available is the banked curve track. This went clearance about two weeks before christmas. That tells me that everything was selling well, except the curved set.

The best way to see if SCX is coming back to Target is to check the SCX web site. Some of the items list availble at Target, so if that changes with no Target ad, no more sets at Target. Also, check the Target web site. It will probaly take a couple of weeks to up date it after christmas.

After Christmas, the only things that sell are die-cast, action figures, games and summer items. That still leaves a ton of space to fill.

Hey All:

I hope the information I posted was of some use, even if Resinmonger thinks that knowledge and the ability to share it are somehow cheating.

By the way, I will keep "Cheater Slick" if it helps out other people who need an answer to a question, or just share knowledge. What a nice way to show others and new people, about the joys of this board. Keep up the good work!!!!

I will take it as part of your name

Webster's Dictionary - Monger - Noun - A person who disseminates or stirs up something undersirable.

Voxxer,

I may have been misunderstood... I was trying to go for the "All President's Men" (Woodward and Bernstien breaking the Watergate story) vibe. The provider of insider info in that case called himself "Deep Throat" - his cover name. I originally had "Deep Slot" as a cover name for you, the guy who was providing us with insider info on how Target's Toy Sales work. Before I submitted, I got to thinking that "Deep Slot" might be misinterpreted as a bad thing... So, I recalled my early slot racing days. Bikes had come out with banana seats and a wider than then normal rear tire call a "cheater slick". One of the guys I raced with was first to get an Aurora Hop Up kit. He added the big rear slicks on truck wheels to a Lola GT and became "cheater slick". So, this seemed like a better option for a cool cover name for the cool guy giving us cool info (notice the repeat use of "cool"). As it turns out, my attempt at praise with humor did not work so well. Sorry.

monger: 1) noun, A dealer in a specific commodity. Often used in combination: an ironmonger (or in my case one who formally sold 1:43 resin kits or resinmonger). 2) A person promoting something undesirable or discreditable. Often used in combination: a scandalmonger; a warmonger; a badjokemonger.

I try for number 1. I guess I ended up as number 2 in more ways than one.

Dear Resignmonger:

No Harm No Foul, that is the way I'm looking at this. I was just confussed by the meaning, so I sent the post to a friend and his reply is below. He know slot cars and the slot car scene.

Here is an e-mail I sent to a trusted friend:

I trust your opinion, what did I do wrong?

Checkout the HobbyTalk Slot Car board - General - Target stores. Is my post somehow cheating? I'm lost on this one.

Thanks

Jon

Here is the reply:

I think the poster "Resinmonger" was just kidding around with you and giving you props in an indirect way. It wasn't a slam, it was a complement for providing some information to the group. At least that is the way I interpret it.

Thanks Resinmonger for all that you have givin to this board and it members.

Also Sorry

Voxxer,

Thanks for the note, man. My offbeat humor gets too offbeat sometimes. Now we're on the same page. Your post was really cool because you had actually been there and done that and still have ties with those that do. We can all speculate about why something happens and get into wild conspiracy theories that could make a sweet X-Files episode. When somebody can come along and bring us back down to earth, it's pretty sweet. In a world that seems like everyone is out to get you, it is a relief to find out that sometimes stuff just happens.

I'm not referring to Target, but retail stores in general.. including grocery stores.. For those of you who've never had the priviledge to work at one, here's a few tricks these stores will play on you, but you aren't supposed to notice..

1. Gee it's warm in here... Usually said about 2 weeks after Christmas. The store will crank up the heat...Big time.. They want you to start thinking warm weather so you'll look at the spring line up..

2. Gee it's cold in here....Usually said about 2 weeks after the forth of July. They will crank down the A/C to get you thinking about the nice cool weather coming... Check out the winter stuff...

3. Did you know supermarkets will intentionally move everything just so you won't find it??? The grocery stores I worked at will rearrange aisles so you can't find stuff. They don't want you programmed to grab what you need and get out.. They want you to find 20 more item to put in your cart while you're there..

4. They put the things you will most likely want as a "run in for one item" in the back of the store, so you will need to stop and grab a few more items on your way to the milk or bread... and hopefully you will take a different route to the register to grab even more..

5. The best values are almost always at the top shelf or the lowest shelf. The most expensive is at eye level.. They don't want you to strain yourself!!

Just about the time I get the layout stored in my mind, the store reorganizes products and I'm starting all over. :freak: rr

And they do it because it works... statistics show that almost 90% of their sales are impulse items. So the more items they have you walking past... the greater the sales. So don't blame the stores, blame human nature!

I just wish they would keep the same items even if they did reshuffle them every few weeks. Most of the stuff I grow to like gets discontinued.
