View Full Version : Ok, Your Racing Oval Outside and you.....
Team T2C 12-29-2008, 03:36 PM Want To see what at the Track?
Give me some insight to what yoou feel the track:
should have
Must have
wish it had.
Thanks.
Team T2C 12-29-2008, 05:23 PM Ok then, Guess I will get off Cheap on this one then,
MIDWESTRC 12-29-2008, 05:40 PM Good banking 10 deg+, wide lanes 16ft or better, true oval, 350 ft run or greater. Lighting for night races!!!!
IndyRC_Racer 12-29-2008, 05:56 PM Must have
----------
- A decent place to put your car on/take off the track during practice without having to worry about it getting hit.
- Outside barriers/walls that are a little forgiving (seams that won't rip the body off the chassis).
Wish it had:
-----------
- Permanent covered pit area.
- More than one racing line.
- PA system
- A way to get into the infield without walking across the track.
Team T2C 12-29-2008, 06:15 PM ok
1)with 35 ft wide straights I think we can handle the pull off area.
2) I agree with the PA system it is a Must for every track
3) with 40ft wide turns I beleive you have enough shut down before slamming the outside wall and if youo dont that means you are on your roof.
4) more than one racing line hmmm it is what you make off it. gear to run the bottom and make one line or gear to run higher. it is up to you.
5) infeild entrance underground (cant do that)
6)Lighting for Night races No problem Just the question is does anyone want to race at night?
7) track is big enough for you run line but 3-4 are tighter then 1-2 tunrs
8) cover pits (no) too expensive. EZ up and you can cover yourself
Keep them coming. What about driverstands? what do you like and dislike?
and anyhting else.

Could do a bridge but then the car is out of sight for about .0002 of a second.
McLin 12-29-2008, 07:14 PM Must have:
Good PA system
Plenty of electrical outlets for pit trailers (easy to say but expensive to build)
CLEAN bathrooms
Pit lain for easy on and off the track. Also needed for gas racing and it’s much better for us if it runs OUTSIDE the track rather than the infield.
Tall drivers stand
Should have:
Personal transponder support
Covered pit area for the guys without pit trailers (SOOOOO often forgot about) to me this is a biggie
FOOD! Lost income if you don’t have it
Lighting to race at night Do I want to race at night? HELL YES!
Parts available at track
CONTROLED PRACTICE this should almost be in the Must section
davepull 12-29-2008, 07:16 PM covered well lit pits
McLin 12-29-2008, 07:19 PM Let me add that Rome was not built in a day, things like a covered pit area REALLY helps draw in racers but you have to see if this thing is going to make money first.
In fact I should have put this under the Must section. A track is going to be fun, and Lord knows we need another one BUT IF IT DOES NOT MAKE MONEY IT WON'T LAST LONG. Make sure it is doing that and THEN build a covered pit area.
Team T2C 12-29-2008, 07:20 PM cover Pits is just not going to happen(estimate 20-30K min). Tall Drivers stand is a must at this track.
Electricity is expensive but required.
McLin 12-29-2008, 07:29 PM You need to run those folks out of the building with the bay doors LOL
swtour 12-29-2008, 07:47 PM Electricity is expensive but required.
Depending on how often it's needed, the LARGE Towable Construction type generators are CHEAPER, and much quieter than having portable generators..and provide MORE than plenty power for a whole race setup. ..and sometimes you can get the rental companies to donate them once or twice with a little company sign at the event.
..is that building in the photo somthing that could have a railing and floor put on it and be able to be used as the stand? (It's kind of close to the track, but could work "SHORT TERM")
Can INDOOR Pitting be done inside that building w/ the DOOR opened?
Team T2C 12-29-2008, 07:49 PM Yea, it would be nice. Wish we had a bunch of racers up this way. I know where there is a great building big enough to have in and outside. But that is the problem with most tracks. Just not enough people to keep the high rent buildings paid for. Or if you own one it is hard not to rent it and make money.
Looks like the plan will include a dirt oval and off road track. We are planning to race this track maybe 4 races with 4 warm up in oval in 09. Maybe a few races in between. But since we are not located in an area where there is even a hobby shop it will be a big race only track.
We will have parts at this track during events, so no worries.

The big Building in the back ground is a Equipment rental place, if we need more power we can get it insantly.
katf1sh 12-29-2008, 08:14 PM Rule #1 A Awesome Racing Surface
Rule #2 A Good Set Of Rules And Regs
Rule #3 A Good Racing Surface
Everything Else Comes Along In Due Time.........
Oh And If You Are A Track Owner You Must Have Tungsten For Skin!
MIDWESTRC 12-29-2008, 10:15 PM Remember one thing, your track your rules!!!!! You can't please everyone.
Tall drivers stand is a must also.
Team T2C 12-30-2008, 12:22 AM we come from motocross, We deal with this alot. Small events that we have either promoted or help promote averaged about 500 or so racers. R/C events are 100-200 racers. It should hopefully be simple.
Rules of the Track will be:
1)Track rules, and classes!
It is Simple, you will be informed ahead of time of what to expect and hopefully we will have drama free events.
teamhooked13 12-30-2008, 12:51 AM i want ameritrack back thats
98Ron 12-30-2008, 10:11 AM Drivers stand must have a clear line of site for all drivers and long enough so they aren't squeezed together while driving.
I have been to national events where drivers on the left side of the stand had to look through or around the drivers on there right to be able to see turn one. that sucks.... might not be a problem at you place.
Good luck, and like katf1sh said wear your armor and hold your ground. You will get all sorts of "if you did it my way you would have more racers" In 20 year I haven't seen that work out well for the tracks. Run your track, hold your ground.
signman501 12-30-2008, 10:39 AM I've been watching here, run dirt oval near the Harrisburg area. If the dirt oval works out you need to contact the PA Nitro Tour. Might be able to work something out for 2010.
Covered pits are the racers problem, bring an EZ-Up.
Food is a must, if nothing else get with the fire dept or local club to cater. Night racing is a must.
Clean Restrooms.
Good PA, possible to add in a small radio station later.
Electricity for trailers and open pit area. Run a large power line to mobile station to run extension cords from.
Consider using PVC 2x6 boarding for track wall, kind of like soft wall.
Heavy Duty, Tall, WIDE drivers stand
Team T2C 12-30-2008, 02:37 PM Placement of the driverstand i think is Key. Not to bring up old tracks. But I didnt like king so much If you were to the far left it was hard to see when all the drive leaned forward. But I beleive it was because the driver stand was so close to the track and on the later part of the tri oval.
This track being so wide Placement should be able to be right next to the track. Watch big oval races the 1 ft off the bottom normally becomes the line. could result in problems for the Dirt Oval. that is if it was in the middle of the concrete track.
So we got some planning to do.
signman501 12-30-2008, 03:18 PM I don't think the dirt oval should be inside of the concrete track because
A - too much dust on concrete
B - too hard to marshall the concrete track from
C - too far from drivers stand
D - too much people/dirt on concrete track (not good)
I don't know what the layout is for the property around the track but you can do a combo dirt oval/off road track opposite of the drivers stand. I don't know if you have been to Bumps & Jumps near Harrisburg but they are indoors with a combo dirt oval/off road track. For dirt oval you shouldn't want more than 250' to 270' drive line. That will handle most 1/10 & 1/8 classes.
Team T2C 12-30-2008, 05:03 PM we have a second oval, just requires a second driverstand and they arent cheap.
lidebt2 12-30-2008, 06:07 PM Drivers stand must have a clear line of site for all drivers and long enough so they aren't squeezed together while driving..
Maybe do like we do at 360 speedway, stand back against the rail that way no one has to lean over http://www.rctech.net/forum/5165421-post5579.html This is from our Toys for Tots Race.
IndyRC_Racer 12-31-2008, 03:49 PM I agree with what others have said about the #1 thing any track should have is a good racing surface. Too add (and repeat others), here are some additional thoughts.
Must Have
----------
- A good place to pit near/out of my 1:1 vehicle or a good place to unload/load my stuff.
Nothing sucks more than having a great facility with bad access to the pits. If I have to use an EZ-UP, I don't want to have to haul it 100 yards to set it up (along with a table, chair, toolbox, etc.)
- A driver stand that faces East or North East/South East (depending on track layout)
If racing is to be done during the day, mains inevitably will be run later in the day. No one wants to be staring into the sun during their mains.
Wish it had
-----------
- Clean bathrooms
A portable bathroom is acceptable for most men/kids, but getting women to use one can be an issue.
- Food/beverages on-site/near-by
Since you will be outside it would be nice to at least have a cooler filled with cold beverages. Good opportunity for supplimental track income.
- Obvious spectator area
Whether bleachers or a roped off area, it would be nice for people to know where to watch the races. It is hard to generate interest/get new racers if there isn't a good place for them to watch the races.

Driver stand Must Face North East. as Soon as the snow is gone I will have to get over there early and see how bad it is, maybe have to build a sun visor
