I'm in the process of planning my first ever table build. I've decided on 3-6'x8' tables with a 1"x4" under frame, 1"x8" outer frame (border), and 1/2" thick Homosite sound board on top.
After exhaustive research, I've come to the conclusion the plywood top should be somewhere between 1/4"-3/4" in thickness.
The table will be used for temporary layouts with minimumal landscaping. I want strength, duribility, light weight, and low cost (in that order).
My question is: What thickness plywood should I use? What thickness did you use? Any and all (constructive) advice/sugestions wanted and welcome.
PLEASE RESPOND?

HORacer,

Here is a fantastic site for everything HO and it has a secton on tables. Greg Braun has shared a lot of info on every step of building, table construction, track layout, wiring, etc.

Many of the members will share they're own techniques. Being a lazy Hutt, I just used Greg's 5' 4" x 12' table plan.

Unfortunately, the cars disapear past 4' 11" from each drivers station.

I would think 1/2" OSB would do the job and not as expensive as plywood. I Used 3/8" for my HO tables And 1/2" for the 1/32 stuff.

I've set up an oval track up and down my hallway and living room with 27' straights and could track the cars fine. How thick/thin should I make the plywood table top?

For the size you're building, you should be able to get away with 3/8". That will be less expensive and lighter than 1/2". How far apart are you planning to put your cross braces? Your framing will greatly stiffen the plywood.

I plan on framing the outside dia. of the 4'x8' sheet, with 3 inner cross braces aprox. 19"
-c-, then rip a 4'x8' sheet length wise to make a 2'x8' to widen the table to 6'x8' with the 1"x4" extending out to 6'.
