View Full Version : Connecting Team Checkpoint balancer to SMC 3200, 7.4v battery?
Zonic2001 12-22-2008, 06:13 PM The checkpoint balancer I have has an adapter to the battery that is made of one white plug (fron the balancer) into three banana plugs (two big and one small). My SMC battery has a dean plug and a JST XH plug to connect a charger/balancer. Is there an already made adapter that I can use to connect both items (checkpoint balancer & SMC lipo battery)? Where can I get it? I called Team checkpoint and they are of no use. SMC was more helpfull and told me the type of connector they have on their battery besides the dean (which I know).

rcgen 12-22-2008, 07:15 PM Team checkpoint balancer is the same as the equinox lipo balancer that Hobby World sells. They have the different adaptors for various lipo. Just make sure you get the right one for 2s.

Andy Koback 12-22-2008, 07:45 PM Common Sense RC has a very nice equalizer that works awesome! Plugs right into the little plug on the SMC battery, reads out the voltage from 1 to 6 cells in a digital readout so you can monitor the cells voltage while you're charging. Price was around $30 I believe. No harnesses needed for the SMC anyway.
signman501 12-23-2008, 10:27 AM As rcgen said, the checkpoint balancer is the same at the equinox balancer. You may want to get the high power adapter for this balancer. It will charge at 1C or 2C if necessary.
Look at this from Tower: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNGC6&P=M
Zonic2001 12-24-2008, 09:39 AM RCgen, Can't use the equinox 2S connector because the 2S plug doesn't fit the SMC batteries. The SMC has a JST XH plug, not a 2S. The same with the connector you recommended sifnman501. I probably use the equinox 2s and buy a JST HX plug and repalce the 2S end in the equinox. What a pain!!!! LOL

Zonic2001 12-24-2008, 09:45 AM hobbyten... u got a PM... rc lipo.com is not a webpage.
DrtRcrM87 12-26-2008, 10:24 AM Zonic,In the past I've used the Astroflight "Blinky".I have a pair of Poly-RC 20C 5S packs I run in an RC boat.and the blinky does it's job balancing the cells without issue.
The balancing plug on the SMC packs are basically the same as my Poly-RC packs.
I'm sure the Astroflight piece would do the job.

OvalTrucker 12-26-2008, 10:33 AM Here's what works. Balancer Harness (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNGC6&P=M)The only problem is you get all of the balancer harnesses in one package, I could not buy them separately.
It plugs into the TC Balancer or the Equinox Balancer.
You'll only need the 2 cell harness, but you get a 3, 4 and 5 cell harness also. It works perfectly.

Here's Danny of SMC posted on another forum: http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric-road/260029-smc-40c-c-max-7-4v-hardcase-lipos-4.html
I'm not a big fan of seperate balancers because when you hook them up they create extra resistance which increases the voltage your charger will see so the pack will fall in CV mode faster and stay in that mode longer which will increase your charge time.
A Lipo charger with built in balancer is the way to go. There are some chargers with built in balancing that only cost 100.00 - 125.00.
If you want to go the balancer route then the Equinox by ElectriFly is a balancer that has the same connectors we use so it's ready to use with no adpaters.
Our new website is a work in progress hopefully it will not suck as much in the near future.
