View Full Version : SPORATIC engine performance
NITROJC 12-22-2008, 10:10 AM Hello people, I have a 1980 / 5hp. Briggs / Auger type Snow blower which runs, but has no pattern to trouble shoot its behavior. I have cleaned, and soaked the carb; installed a new fuel pump kit [spring & diaphram], But still doesn't seem to help. When starting it's Difficult, 1 in 10 pulls to get her going. So, I prime it thru the spark plug hole ... to get her going. The carb to fuel tank has a new gasket, and the carb to block intake's gasket is Good. ALL screws and bolts are Tight, and I don't believe there are any Air leaks.
Once the engine is running, She will clear 6" to 8" of Snow, so I believe the Engines compression is OK. However, after loading then returning to NO Load, Sometimes the engine just Dies for no reason ! Also when running, at times I see a few Red sparks comming from the muffler, but no Backfire.
Lastly, In the past few years, I have encountered a "Sticking intake valve." This Blower has not been used on a Regular Basis from Year to Year, Probally accounting for the sticky valve at times. I am therefore, Calling on ALL EXPERTISE to the Rescue to Help Solve this MYSTERY. Thank-You-All, Sincerely, Jim.
justin3 12-22-2008, 04:58 PM Sounds like you could have an issue with your valves not seating properly or a loose valve seat. I would start inspecting your valves and valve seats.
Elmo31 12-22-2008, 10:03 PM The quick fix if it's just a sticking valve is to get her running, sped up,dribble a little automatic tranny fluid into carb, makes a helluva smoke, repeat 2 or 3 times, then keep adding The a/t fluid enough to make it stall.....let it set hours or overnight....this should loosen a sticking valve....If still troubled, check for loose valve guide(a death nell} if guide is not too loose, then grind the valves and set clearance.....ET
NITROJC 12-23-2008, 08:18 AM ELMO, What about pouring "Mystery Oil" into the carb air inlet, in place of ATFluid. Have you used this stuff, or know of anyone that has, and would, or did it work ? Thanks, Jim.
NITROJC 12-29-2008, 09:50 AM JUSTIN, AND ELMO .... Your ideas were helpful, and I did as you suggested. The trans fluid seems to have helped quiet down the valve problem. The other problem turned out to be a Partically blocked main jet, which is located behind the needle valve assembly. I removed it and ran a cleaner wire thru it ... This did the trick .... I now have full adj. with the needle, and with the engine warm, No choke is necessary to keep the motor running, as was the case before. Thanks, Jim.

NITROJC 02-14-2010, 08:40 PM Hello People, All that I did to get the Snowblower Running Properly last year has Evaporated. I am back to square 1. I did leave Treated fuel in the Gas tank from last year, as I Always do from year to year.
Please, Re-read the problems I noted last year, and Tell me .....
WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH THIS ENGINE !!
Thanks, Jim.
geogrubb 02-14-2010, 11:34 PM If you would post the model, type and code it would help. My suggestion would be to do what you did last time. As it seems you use the engine only once a year the treated fuel in the tank is a waste if you didn't run the engine to get it in the carb after being treated. Since it is 30 years old any and all gaskets can be leaking, if it is a model with a fuel line it will be deteriorating and filling the fuel system with gunk. Have a good one. Geo
