View Full Version : Sweet new Super G-Plus Gray Chassis?
resinmonger 12-21-2008, 12:36 PM I wonder if Wahoo Steve has considered selling the gnarly new gray SG+ chassis as a stand alone item? Would enough racers buy it to make separate packaging and stocking worth Racemaster's and dealer's effort? Would you buy some? I need around 24. Does everyone convert to BSRT G3 or would you buy a grey SG+?
What do you think?

Jimmy49098 12-21-2008, 12:47 PM I wish afx would sell bare grey super g chassis, I have tons of parts from black ones that broke, I could probably put together 6 to 8 chassis with the parts I have.

I am impressed with the grey chassis. i race the G3 platform with the scale auto guys (HOPAC), and while we can use a tomy chassis in place of a G3 everyone pretty much sticks with the G3. for pure racing, the G3 chassis has an edge in durability, tighter tolerances, and the molded in holes for body mounting tubes makes mounting lexan racing bodies much easier.
but i still really like the gery super G+ chassis. since i started racing with HOPAC and learned how to tweak a G3, ive been upgrading all my super G+ chassis (truing and polishing the com, boring out the bushings, tweaking the end bells, using indpendent fronts, replacing the gearing and axles, and replacing the pick up shoes with brst parts).
my fastest G3 superstock runs a 2.3 on my 16 foot maxtrax. my fastest grey super G+ runs a 2.5. as i tune more of the super G+ i may find one that rivals my best G3.
what kind of rear end set up do you like for the super G+?
ive been going with a 22 or 23 bsrt delrin crown, Ti 0.059 axle cut from bar stock, link below) and either the soft black ASTs (~452, a little high but makes for a really fun car, cruises very nicely), silicone sponges i got on sale ranging from 448 to 436, or slip on silicones.

RiderZ 12-21-2008, 01:18 PM The new "grey" chassis are above & beyond compared to the brittle black ones.I replaced 12 with the BSRT chassis. When i bought my Super International set i was pleasantly surprised to see the SG+ cars had the new chassis.:)
AfxToo 12-21-2008, 01:31 PM Tomy/RaceMasters has always been weird about not selling bare chassis. Why, I don't know? Fortunately, the SG+ rollers are very reasonably priced. You can buy the gray SG+ rollers on blister cards for around $14.00 each from anyone who deals through REH. That's one of the better deals out there in my opinion for a box stock racing roller that's not a throw away item like the LL-T. If you do all the normal G tweaks like Mike says and sand the rear tires flat it's a great package as-is.
It's all about finding the sweet spot at the right price point. The gray SG+ roller, modestly tweaked, running your favorite AFX or AW hard body, is a great box stock racing platform. Upping the ante with silicone slip-ons is still within reason. That's still a "best bang for the buck" scenario. But know when to stop! Once you start thinking about fansifying the SG+ with far more expensive aftermarket and race specific upgrades then you are better off going with the G3(R) since it has more high end potential because it was purpose built for the race specific scenarios that it is targeting.
1976Cordoba 12-21-2008, 02:14 PM When the grey chassis first came out I recall scoring a deal from Bud's for three chassis at $36 plus shipping, which I thought was a good deal.
Some of the old black chassis I am switching out the mags with G-Jet weights and turning them into sliders. They are fun around my track at 12v -- any higher and they start to get a little hairy with that 6 ohm stock arm.

Is the roller listed on the AFX site not the new plastic then?
mking 12-21-2008, 02:52 PM i think resinmonger wants a bare chassis (no motor, no magnets, no electricals), not a roller
Montoya1 12-21-2008, 02:57 PM Right. I think you are correct.

Correct, Mike. I was looking at my stash of SG+ legacy chassis and thinking it would be cool to just pop the parts into Improved MKII Grey chassis. Then the thought of how many people would be interested in this came to mind. If it's just me, it wouldn't be worth the effort. If the idea of buying the new chassis in bare form was very popular, one could pass the info on to Wahoo and see what happened. If they could have another item to make some fundage from, that would be good. If it's a limited demand idea, I'll give the good guys at Scale Auto some biz.
Thanks to all of you who have offered ideas/opinions thus far! :)
