Crimnick 12-21-2008, 01:03 PM Thus you know why God created slotcars on the 8th day when he got back to work..
AfxToo 12-21-2008, 01:08 PM In Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse they'd call that "a dusting."
slotcarman12078 12-21-2008, 01:14 PM Very true AFXtoo!!! We usually escape most of the lake effect stuff, being as far east as we are.. This year we seem to get a new storm every 2-3 days.. Needless to say, I have already had my fill of the fluffy white stuff, and hope this never ending string of storms takes a break.. soon!!!
Hilltop Raceway 12-21-2008, 01:39 PM Snowcream!!!
slotcarman12078 12-21-2008, 01:48 PM Snowcreams indeed!! Let's see... I'll need 50 gallons of vanilla, and 20,000 gallons of milk, and five hundred pounds of sugar... Now that I have gone and shovelled a bit, I'm remembering someone else having the "winter blues"... Thanks for the "leftovers", Doba!!!
1976Cordoba 12-21-2008, 02:08 PM Yes that is the same crap storm we had Friday (a day I had used as a vacation day that I ultimately ended up spending 3 1/2 hours running the snowblower across three different day parts starting at 6 a.m.).
We got another 'dusting' of about 3 inches last night. The forecast for today is for flurries and 'high wind' so that coupled with the temp (9 degrees) should push the windchill into the sub-zero realm.
Ahhhhh . . . and tomorrow is Monday.
joez870 12-21-2008, 02:21 PM Sorry about that, Ujoe!
That is pretty much how it looks around here.....also every 2 or 3 days.
Just came in to warm up a bit...and I am so thankful that I spent the extra 100.00 on the snowblower with the electric start!
...it is 0 degrees here. It might reach 5 degrees. The wind is blowing a steady 20-25 MPH. our low over night was -10 and it will do that again. I have no idea what that does to the windchill but anything past 0 is just freaking cold to me.
I have spent the last 2 hrs grinding through 7" of snow and all that is left are the front and back steps. WOOHOO!
Ujoe,
I can handle 6000 gallons of milk for ya!!
Cold here too... -20 with the wind chill.. single digits other wise.. the ICE storm was a nice touch...

joeslotcar 12-21-2008, 09:08 PM I went for a walk today and brushed that much snow off my shoulder. I live between Buffalo and Rochester. We have two feet and counting since yesterday. But it's not really a big deal for us up here. Fire up the snowblower and in 20 minutes the driveway is clear then back in the basement to tune up my car for the Snowball 500 (HaHa funny it's called Snowball) at SCCOTTT on Sat. Buffalo is always getting the bad rap for snowfall. Actually, Syracuse gets much more snow than Buffalo. "Lake Effect Snow" (cold air passes over the warm lakes and picks up moisture then deposits it in the form of snow, lots of snow) from Lakes Erie (Buffalo) and Ontario (Syracuse). We push it out of the way and move on.

slotcarman12078 12-21-2008, 09:43 PM I've had my share of lake effects.. driving Tractor trailer.. I remember driving in Buffalo on a beautiful clear day and driving into what can only be described as a white sheet. I went from clean pavement to 6" of snow in complete white out conditions.. I got to the place I was picking up at only to find the load wasn't going to be ready for another day. It took all of 30 minutes of talking on the phone to my dispatcher to accumulate 6" :eek:of the lovely white stuff on my warm hood. Thank God they got me up to the northern half of town... Back into clear blue skys... and clean roads. Yes I agree, Syracuse and Rochester do get more... and Buffalo gets the bad reputation.. prolly 'cause it's easier to spell Buffalo!! i still need to unearth the Fire hydrant buried in that stuff...
win43 12-22-2008, 03:44 AM Well guys get ready for more. We just had a storm (a few storms actually) come through here and they're heading your way. They should intensify as they cross the Cascade mountains. I didn't get much here...a dusting youse would call it. Maybe 7 inches total. But the storm keeps dropping more and more snow as it heads east.
roadrner 12-22-2008, 09:25 AM Just keep that stuff up your way. If that much hit the DC area, we'd be shut down for a month. ;) rr
gear buster 12-22-2008, 09:43 AM Don't have none now and don't need none later.
Looks like you guys have enough we don't need none here in the east.:p
AfxToo 12-22-2008, 10:56 AM Actually, Syracuse gets much more snow than Buffalo.
Yep, and the corridor between Syracuse and Oswego is even worse, as I can attest to from first hand shoveling experience. But even these are nothing compared to the Tug Hill region north of Syracuse, with a record of nearly 39 feet of snow for the winter of '76-'77. In 2007 one of the towns up there received 141 inches of snow over a 10 day period. That's nearly 12 feet of snow in less than two weeks. Egad.
Milwaukee, however, has a bone chilling cold that adds an order of magnitude of misery to whatever snowfall does fall. It's generally 15-20 degrees colder in the winter on the western side of the Lakes compared to the eastern, Lake Effect, side. Take your pick, bone chilling cold and knee high snow or buried up to your bellybutton in lake effect snow? Maybe Arizona, Florida, and South Texas are ready for some slot car refugees from the north?
The good news is that slot cars in basements are unaffected, even enhanced somewhat, by snowfall. In fact, you'll generally find some of the best slot car racing and hobby opportunities are in populated areas with crappy winter weather.
NTxSlotCars 12-22-2008, 11:16 AM It's just not fair. I don't remember the last white Christmas we had down here. There was a big snow storm in 1979-80. I think on Christmas it was a few years after that. If we're lucky, we get ice, but mostly, it's just bone chilling cold. The humidity off the Gulf makes the air really thick, and gives it excellent heat transfer properties. In the summer, there's no escaping the heat. The air covers you like a hot wet blanket, and it's a 100 degrees in the shade. So, now, it's 25 degrees outside with 25-30 mph winds that slap you in the face so hard it feels like your skin is going to fall off. Painfully cold. I've heard from my dad and others who have lived up north that the air is dryer, and even though its still very cold, it doesn't feel the same as here. Anyone up there used to live around here? Anyways, if it's going to be this cold, I AT LEAST want to see some snow. It's time for a CHANGE. Maybe this new administration will redistribute the weather.

slotcarman12078 12-22-2008, 11:29 AM Pretty close there RR!! I was stuck in Jessup, MD for 4 days in that 33" snowstorm back about 5 winters ago. The TA truckstop was running out of food by the time the whole fiasco was over. What really shut us down though was the contractor who was supposed to clear the truckstop parking lot never did... It made for a really carppy paycheck the following week..
That was a only a bit more entertaining than the blizzard of 95/96 that left me stuck in Tom's Brook, VA for 3 days.....
resinmonger 12-22-2008, 09:04 PM This is Torrance broadcasting to all stations. Low temp of 47 and rain have signalled the end of mankind. Is there anyone out there?
slotcarman12078 12-22-2008, 10:38 PM Surf up, Russ??? Forty seven is tee shirt weather for me!!! I was quite suprised today when I ventured out. They actually plowed our street for once and I had to tear through 2 feet of packed snow to get out. I only got stuck one time trying to back in when I got home..
Being the hot blooded, thick headed Italian I am, I'm quite comfortable with 50's-60's. Naturally, when I get into that muggy, humid 90-100 degree stuff that Rich was referring to, I damn near die. Florida was a nightmare for me and I couldn't wait to get out of there. Dry heat is ok though.. I recall being in Casa Blanca, AZ and the parking lot temp was 138 degrees. Me and humidity are not very good friends...
I cannot fathom 12 feet of snow in a season, let alone in 2 weeks!!! I remember hearing about that storm, but I don't recall watching the news to see the pictures.. When I lived in CT, the warmth from Long Island Sound kept the air temp just warm enough that we didn't get much of the white stuff. There were a few exceptions... I'm pretty sure Nuther Dave (if he was around there at the time) recalls the Blizzard of '78... That's the one that messed my back up...

I think I have been to that TA in my big truck. I was up there in the summer a couple of years ago. I tried to stay out of the northeast. Beautiful, but not good for a half lost middle of the U.S. guy.
slotcarman12078 12-23-2008, 02:10 AM The whole east coast was a chore, but yes, the northeast was especially unkind to us road warriors.. Bad road planning (they had to build it around everything), ungodly traffic, and a predominance of type A personalities made driving this area a mental nightmare. It's hard to think about anything else when 99.9% of your concentration is focused on everything around you. The last driving job I had didn't even want to send me up here, and we both cringed when I requested home time.
I mostly ran from TN west with them, and loved running the left half of the country. 70/75 MPH speed limits in a 100 MPH truck was a blast! The boss was a speed freak and his whole fleet did 100 or faster. His #2 man got snagged in TX...clocked at 137 MPH!!! And got a ticket for a bad tire and a burned out tail light.. The sheriff was retiring in one week and just had a 100 MPH ticket thrown out of court 'cause the judge didn't believe a truck could go that fast!! Needless to say, he took that sheriff to dinner 2 weeks later..
I don't miss the hassles of driving, but I sure miss the fun and the funds!!!
