I have an old Faller VW beetle that needs a rear bumper. I have the front bumper and it is removable so I was wondering if I could make a cast of it to create a back bumper? I started looking around the house for something to make a cast of it with. I tried plumbers putty and my kids moon sand. So far not much luck. I also tried super glue and a nail polish my wife had as a molding material. Again, no luck. I am not looking to get into vacuum forming or anything really involved. I am just looking to make a quick mold and create a rough bumper for this one car. Any cheap and easy suggestions? I considered plaster of paris but have not tried it yet.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Old Blue

Try aquarium calking, I haven’t tried it yet on small parts, but have read about it.

Or Sculpey

Don’t forget a release agent

any type of silicone calk will work, but they will take time to cure an make sure to use a release agent

Try HobbyLobby. Look in the craft section where they keep the resin mix and decopod stuff. It's not the Alumilite brand. It's a 2 part modeling clay that hardens for molds, after you mix it. Haven't tried it, bit it might work...RM

baby oil works great if you need mold release.

If you are just wanting the rear bumper you could save a lot of time and money by buying a whole bug from JAG hobbies and steal the rear bumper off of it. Or go to http://www.ho-slotcars.com/ and buy just the bumper. The front and rear bumpers are totally different so casting the front will only get you another front bumper anyhow. JAG hobbies is very reliable. I also have some cool custom stuff from http://www.ho-slotcars.com/ AKA RRR=Road Race Replicas.

Okay, I tried the silicone caulk trick and I believe I have a workable mold. Instead of buying a bottle of resin mix, can I melt other plastic to pour in the mold, or is there another option like super glue?

I am only trying to make something the size of a big toenail.............Wait a minute!!!

Only kidding.

Okay, I used the silicone caulk as the mold, remembered the release agent (Thank you) and used my hot glue gun instead of resin. When I was done I used the bare metal foil to finish

you may try JB weld if you want to make another, you could sand an shape it easily, Dont look bad for a hot glue bumper
