I downloaded Firefox the first day I got my Mac and never looked back. It's great! Every independent thing you read about Firefox says it's THE way to go.

yeah unfortunately we're forced to use IE here @ work. Various app's work directly off of it. At home though I'm like everyone else, any form of alternate browser is good enough for me. Mozilla is definitely good stuff. I've been hearing of another browser on the horizon but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it. Heck it might have even been the mac safari thing. That's supposed to be really nice as well. Not sure if I can get that for a pc though. Might have to google it later when I get home.

Cheers,
Xence

These sort of cybersecurity issues are a common occurrence across a broad spectrum of software based products from multiple vendors on multiple platforms. No browser or online application on any platform is completely safe from hacking unless you cut the network cable and lock the computer in a safe. If you want to live on the paranoid edge of computing keep an eye on the US CERT web site (http://www.us-cert.gov/nav/t01/). All of the platforms and brands are well represented, though having a 90% market share makes Microsoft the volume leader and the most frequent target of attacks. The non-Microsoft browsers and platforms are no more or less secure than Microsoft's, it's simply a matter of market share and the size of the attack surface.

I am particularly fond of Firefox because of the rich set of add-ons, especially AdBlock Plus and Firebug, the fact that Firefox is available on all the major platforms, and has fewer hackers trying to break it. The AdBlock Plus add-on is great for killing those stupid animated icons that some people add to their web sites and BB posts. Safari and Chrome are competent browsers, both based on the same webkit engine, but they don't have the add-ons I am so dependent on. Plus, once all is said and done, browsers are a pretty dull lot so there's not much to get excited about. Another browser, big whoop.

Some browser based apps that check for a particular browser version can be tricked by the User Agent Switcher add-on. The number of non compliant web sites out there that still use IE specific constructs is getting smaller, but there is an add-on for Firefox (IE Tab) that will step in and render those pages using the IE engine.

You hit the nail on the head. If you want to create mayhem and you have a choice of hitting 1% of the computers out there or 70%, what is your evil choice going to be? If some other product were king of the hill, Microsoft would look like the secure choice.

All that being said though, it certainly doesn't negate the idea of switching.

Mike, you're going to need to update from your Commodore 64 in order to use FireFox. Please box up your PC, along with your controllers and mail them to me, it's clear you shouldn't be on the internet. ;)

My 401k and all other work related site is set up for IE I guess.
I tried to access it with Firefox but it would not let me.I hate
these so called 'smart' technologies. They seem kinda dumbass
at times.

You can also install the User Agent Switcher add-on to Firefox. If the website is merely checking for browser versions for reasons of developer laziness then this add-on will fix you up. There are some legitimate reasons to check for browser versions because certain features commonly used in web based apps, like AJAX, are implemented quite differently on different browsers. Well designed sites will check for versions and make whatever accommodations needed internally so you don't even notice. The worst offenders in this department tend to be the very large systems intended for corporate use, for example SAP or an HR or CRM package developed by a third party for your company. They tend to be far less accommodating, in typical IT fashion.

The IE Tab add-on will always work for sites requiring IE because it is actually running the IE browser engine in the Firefox tab. This workaround assumes the site is happy with the version of IE you have installed on your machine. The nice thing about this feature is that you can tell it to always launch for certain sites.

Nice to see Microsoft plug this hole so quickly and outside of the normal patch Tuesday cycle. The actual threat was mostly limited to web sites in Asia, but there was a concern the attack vector would be exploited elsewhere.

Microsoft patches are not unique. I just had to install a 190 MB patch to my Mac OS X system today and the Ubuntu patches are always streaming down as well, even for the latest releases.

In mid transaction a guy I've known for twenty years at our local auto store looks up at me and sez sorry computers just went down. He looked like a doe in headlights!

I sez, "Uh Dennis take that pen outta yer pocket and write it down."

What a concept!

Problem is ...that we havent just lost the pen or the paper...we lost the part of our brain that we operate the pen and paper with.

Dependency in any form scares me silly....little wonder we have become a nation of "duh"... It's because we need map quest to first find the boot so we can google the instructions of how to pour the pee out of them and then go online to discuss the environmental ramifications of peeing in the wind.

Computers were the biggest bamboozle in known history.

I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.

Once we discovered they could read lips, we knew our days were numbered.

Then: I got an address and a map. Got there when I got there.
Parked the truck, went to a payphone, called the house or dispatch. Good
Excuse to take a break. Usually an hour.
Looked at the sky to figure out the weather, relied on visuals to tell me if I
had bad roads..
Now: I google for the address.. plug it into my Garmin, and race the ETA
Pickup the Cell phone, call the wife or the boss.. or the receiver while still
Moving down the road... break has been reduced to 30 min. if I force
Myself..
Check the weather on my Cellphone, or call wife and have her pull up
Doppler radar on the computer..
Upside,, I can call Coach, Bobzilla, Joez, or Bill if I'm bored....

Just what is this pen and pencil that you speak if, Bill? Is it a Windows application?

(Only nine quick "Happy Thanksgiving!" posts away from 500 - sweet.)

And they gripe at me when I use a pen to write on my hand to remember something? OK I gotta use the WTF? 27 plus passwords. Remember Neato times? Keeps the brain active anyway. We gotta hang in there. David

Newest Firefox add-ons that will enhance your HT and slot car experience:

Auto Pager:
This add-on automatically expands the pages in multi-page postings so it appears as one long page. Very helpful.

Also check this out if you have a high speed connection and decent graphics card:

Cooliris:
A 3D browsing utility for finding graphical content. The content appears in a 3D carousel format. Search for "slot cars." Very cool if somewhat gratuitous.
