Ok guys, it's the off season. What repairs, upgrades & projects do you have planned for your car(s) and/or trailer?

I'm planning to fully cage my 2003 WCM. The car has been solid since purchased in 03. My son took it to many wins and I put several on it myself. It's time to upgrade that bad boy with a full tubular armor. It will look close to the newer WCM's. The kit is a work of art put out by Rick Himself. The front aluminum shock towers are going away. I will be going to 4130 shock towers welded onto the chassis like the Pro1 cars. I'll add the clamp on shock mounts to complete the deal. I haven't decided on the laydown conversion yet, but I'll probably stick with the traditional motor setup.

On my 2007 Pro1 I'll be tearing it down going through everything, replacing the bearings, steering pin bushings, checking the heims...ect.

I'll also go through the throttle/brake cable system on both. Plus I have been listening to ideas from another racer on bullet proofing the front steering system. I should be able to remove much of the steering slack that comes along over time. Of course, both motors will need to be rebuilt. Don't know if I'll do them myself or let someone else build in some much HP?!

On my trailer: I plan to add another short bench to hold a vise and drill press. I do hope to get my tig welder setup in the trailer for at track repairs. I hope to learn how to tig weld too!!! ... LOL. If not, there's always AJ to take the torch for me. I do have the trusty mig if needed. I wil also be insulating the roof better while sheeting it with 1/4" luan. My AC unit is a bit on the heavy side so the extra support will help with the bumps along the way to the track.

I have a lot planned. Not sure if the wifey will let me get it all done by March but I'm gonna hide in the trailer until she comes looking with the honey do list.

So....What you got going on this winter?

Just get all my old dirty fast cars cleaned up. new bushings and clean out the bearings. Set it all up and put some new tires on them and wait for next season.LOL I hope to have a few warm weekend so I can do a little testing on some NEW frontend parts for the sprinter.

I hope to get me a new trailer for next year. I have a lot to do for other people also.

No wife or honey do list. My time and money is my own. I've got some learning to do, and need to get everything ready from scratch. It's a good thing that there are allot of good people like Scott and Jim and the whole 1/4 scale community to help.

When converting the pre 2006 WCM chassis as the one in the pic on this post, From the stand up motor to laydown . The inner bar that goes length ways from upper right top chassis rail to the lower left chassis rail needs to be shortened about 1 inch the reason is the outlet on the muffler comes out behind that bar and makes it difficult to get a exhaust hose on the pipe ,and the motor plate needs to be noched for the muffler to clear, I thought I should share this with you guys incase any of you are thinking about laying down a motor , By the way nice job on the cage it looks good ,Thanks for sharing ,,,Robert

I heard walnut shell blasting works great.

chuck_thehammer

walnut shell blasting is best, followed by soda ash, for any sort of covering over metal.

sand blasting gets the metal hot and could warp it.

I know this from 1:1 cars.

Soda ash??

One other thing, my powder coating guy told me that when using stripper keep the (chassis) area warm.

I have my frames dipped in caustic soda . Takes paint , grease , oil , brazing flux off the material without hurting the metal .

What are the Pros & Cons of powder coating... personal opinions?

wcm00
12-16-2008, 07:37 PM
I Prefer Powder Coating Over Just Painting The Frame. I Have Tried Both. Powder Coating Is Lighter, Lasts Three Times As Long. Does Not Have The Little Nicks Like Regular Paint Gets. I Also Think It Is Cheaper. Might Not Be In Some Places But I Get Mine Done At A Very Good Price Or I Think It Is A Very Good Price. Almost Everyone I Know Uses The Powder Coating.

Paul there's a place here in Toledo called American Metal Cleaning . I don't have the web site address handy . It cost $50 , sounds pricey but alot less messy to deal with .

we have ice here, it is raining and freezes when it hits the ground, road, steps, cars,
and fender benders, a lot of them. 10 am. I am glad I did not have to go out into it. Ohio drivers forget how to drive in bad weather every year.
