According to a post over at UTHCC, Matt says that Target will not be carrying GL in 09. They will not be getting Speed3 or any 09 releases. I guess they will be replaced by Maisto,Jada,Players(LOL) or something else that clogs the pegs now. Seems to me that the GL product moved along just fine as long as it was new. I did notice that in a couple of stores they seemingly received a master case of auction block over the summer and those are still hanging. My closest Target put out MCG7 3 weeks ago and they are gone, don't know what more they could ask? Me either. Oh well, guess I can stop getting up early on my days off, I can sleep til 9:30 and go to TRU. No Meijer's, Menards, or HEB here, just crooked Kmarts and TRU, oh well.

And we are finally getting a Target in southern Mississippi!

All of those other brands do nothing for me. They are hanging at WalMart with an inch of dust on them.

So no more GL at Target. K-mart practically went belly up recently as we all know. TRU will be going by the wayside just like Kaybee did. Wal-mart does not carry GL. Eventually, we will only be able to find GL at one store. OLD's look better and better every day.

That hurts. First Johnny Lightning & now Greenlight. I wish they would drop something else that does not move rater than the stuff that does tend to move. It is a sad day to know that a major retailer dropped the line.

Looks like the same thing that happened with JL. I hope more stores don't follow. I'm seeing way to many GL pegwarmers at most TRUs, KMART's, KB's.:(

As much as I hate to see GL go from Target, I'm not at all surprised. JL suffered the same fate: no product on the shelves for extended periods of time = company not welcome anymore. The closest three Targets all feature the same three GL cars right now: the Speed Firebird Dragster, The BJ 64 Fury, and the 65 Coronet from MCG 7. Each store has less than 4 GL cars total, and we are less than 2 weeks away from Christmas.

Sending MCG8 to WM in Canada was one of the biggest nails in the coffin. Had Target been able to keep up in sequence, we would be seeing the last of MCG 7 and some MCG 8 on the pegs. Instead, MCG 7 has been gone for a month or more, the Speed and BJ series only made an occasional appearance, and apparently nothing is to follow. JL made the same mistake - leave a big box retailer with empty pegs during the biggest shopping months of the year (or in JLs case, all year round), and the retailer is going to fill those pegs with a product they can get. Probably more NASCAR product. It sits for months at a time, but there is NO shortage of it.

My October Lee's Guide had a 1/2 page ad from GL promoting the Flames Series cars, saying they would be available in November from Target and Hobby Dealers. I guess this little eviction has been in the works for some time? Either way, being stuck with the last two retailers - K-Mart (Ray said it best: K-Mart sucks) and TRU (where employees get all their shopping done at the loading docks) is bad thing indeed. Its a shame GL spread themselves too thin... the product is superior to everything on the market.

RIP Greenlight - you will be missed.

Sign of the times-I think it's probably due to economics(demand) more than product.

It doesn't mean Greenlight is gone just because Target got rid of them (for now). They are still a fairly new company and doing much better than JL. The situation for Target could change anyhow in 2009, but we won't know until then.

here's another thing to consider... really not the Target thing, but at Meijers

at one point maybe last year or even the year before.. when the GL was shipping to Meijers... I saw at least 20 pegs of GL, at least 5 to 7 cars deep on the pegs.... and weeks if not months latr...they were still there

I think some may have to do with the (sometimes) dumb chase car thing
Obviously there were no Green machines there...they were probably all gone as they were being put out, if not before they even hit the floor.. so all the regulars just sat there....

Funny how JL may be about the same. When they experimented (?) with that one shipment to Kmart recently. Probably every one u checked had either all the cars still hanging or, wow big surprise, 1 car missing the white lightning.... the remaining just sat there... so why would Kmart get more to just hang there?
I know some mentioned here say they don't last long at before they are gone, but I'm just going by my own experience, in my area.

Sure, Hot Wheels has the Tresure Hunts, but even after the scalpers do thier harvesting, at least kids are buying the cars cuz they are cheap.

Targets around my area haven't had any new Greenlights for quite some time now. I've pretty much gave up looking for diecast that I collect at Target anymore.

If JL had a rough time GL does not have a prayer. My TRU still has full sets of the original BB release. JL did make a comeback, and maybe this has something to do with it. I now see twice the space for JL and GL phasing out. All the new JL's flew off the pegs, while GL's were picked over for GM's, and the rest left behind. (I only buy GMs and trade them for WLs) I hope TL looses all his money. :woohoo:

A new box of GL does not last 2 weeks at my TRU. There are no "oldies" hanging with the exception of some BB Vettes(my store got 4 boxes). My store does however have a bunch of JL that's been there since LAST Christmas. If too many boxes of the same product gets put out they don't all sell. This is the nature of adult collectible diecast. These are not purchased by unknowing Moms for a dollar. WM kept putting the same release on the pegs time and again, they didn't sell, WM quit carrying them. The problem lies w/inventory management, JL went down in flames at Target for the same reason. It is not a JL or GL issue.

Tom Lowe owns Greenlight? When did that happen?

the first time i stopped at a new target in the area, the pegs were loaded with about 40 to 50 greenlights between a few different series. of course there were no green machines and it looked like only one or two cars were missing from each series. i figured that the local scalper was going to be the only one buying them who would only pick the greens. i expected the rest would be clogging the pegs as i thought there was no interest in them for the area. imagine my surprise when i returned a few weeks later only to find 3 or 4 left on the pegs.... another target 50 miles away had most of the same cars hanging for nearly a year. some areas they are hot and some they are not. it has nothing to do with the product itself.

as for johnny lightning's walmart demise, i agree with rattlehead. they ordered too many of the same series, most of which were duds. you would see 4 cases of coke, 3 cases of rock art and only one mixed case that contained cars that people would actually buy. another problem walmart seemed to have is that they would wait until there was literally only one or two cars left on the pegs before they would ever put anything new on the pegs. by that time the cars they would put out were already released for months and most who would actually buy them have already bought them online. i noticed this was only with johnny lightnings. you would see cases upon cases of overstock of the crap nobody buys but never an extra case of johnnies. they don't seem to consistently wait until the pegs or shelves are dry before they order any other product in the store, why do it for johnny lightnings?

You'd think they could drop WC NASCAR stuff instead.
This line died a couple of years back.
Maybe Target will bring back JL later.
They held on to WC and JL for years despite slow sales, by comparasion, GL didnt get a chance.

If I can get my fix for 99 cents, why pay 4-5 dollars?

From a personal point of view, I'm not that sad to see Target get out of the GL business. Wish TRU would drop it too. As a retailer, I get stuck putting out product at a much higher price than any of the big box stores I don't get the benefit of the buying power a chain has. Really sucks when you see a GL at Target going for $0.20 more than my wholesale cost. I end up undercutting the suggested retail by $1.00 per car just to compete, not a great deal for me.
