I just got done creating these little gems. During my formative years, I was fortunate to get to see some of the world, and grew up in Germany. A nice GI with no kids lived in the apartment above us with his wife. While I owned Aurora T-Jets, my first encounter with the newer AFX cars and track was racing on the wood floor at his place. When the time came for he and his wife to move elsewhere, he gave me his entire set along with a dozen or so AFX cars. Two of those cars led to today; the Red/White/Blue Datsun 510, and the yellow Datsun 620 pickup. I loved the looks of these two cars, and through my HO years I probably raced them together over a billion scale miles.
Having gotten into resin casting in order to fulfill my desire at having a decent Trans-Am field, it was only natural that I would have to create this 2.5 Challenge vehicle at some point. My attempt at hand-building the 510 started three years ago and was a disaster in my eyes and I was never happy with the attempt. This led me to investigate other avenues to creating bodies. I settled on a combination of 3D-Scanning, CAD design, and Rapid Prototyping (RP). The 1967 Cougar I created in 2008 was the proof of this concept, and the Datsun is a full-fledged in-house effort, Rapid Prototyping excluded. I acquired the needed hardware, toiled away at the computer learning new software, and finally had a good basis to have made into a part.
I am very excited to be able to race these two cars, er, car and truck, together again.
