View Full Version : How O/T is O/T?

Being a curious fellow, I was wondering......

.....About the other hobbies, if any, many of my fellow slotters may enjoy....... beside the obvious, of course. In some cases, it has been obvious, such as who may own cats, or who plays guitar, etc., by way of their chosen avatar.

.....About whether or not such an O/T thread would be within acceptable HT guidlelines. Does it have to be limited to hobbies covered in HT? Or can it also include other things if it is limited to just saying for the sake of saying "I play banjo in a jazz band" or something like that.

Of course, I understand there is a reasonable limit to everything. For example, if a common interest outside of slots was discovered between two members, it would be up to them to take any further discussion related to that common interest offline elsewhere. That's undestood.

But anyway, I was just being curious if this were possible.

Actually if memory serves you are in that forum now. I believe this particular forum was created with just that in mind.

Some time ago, just prior to the last forum reshuffle; Hank had queried what we thought we needed or wanted in the way of new headings.

Shortly thereafter the "General Discussion" and "Tuning" forums were born.

Go for it Rudy!

I think I may have suggested the tuning forum.Whether or not I did,it has really turned out some great info and discussions.

OT sub forum????? Life Beyond Slots........and I would definetly make a no religion or politics rule for that one or things can go horribly wrong.

Since this was brought up and just for the record, I play electric kazoo in a death metal/bluegrass band. We wear spikes, chains, and straw hats on stage. I favor the Blender Stratakazoo.

Mike,
Agreed. The tuning forum is awesome. I also agree on both counts of your second statement. They may be interests, but I would not define them as "hobbies" per se. For anyone out there who wishes to debate it, please resist the urge. They're off limits. Mike said so. ;)

Lig,
Not sure anyone can beat that one. :jest:

Happy to see so many musicians on hobbytalk! I play cowbell in a 60s / 70s rock cover band. I normally perform a five minute solo during Mississippi Queen.

I'm jealous.

On a serious note, I do enjoy playing guitar. Spent a lot of time on ebay this summer hoping to find a certain neck to work with on kit bashing another six stringer.

The amp will be put in the box with me when they lower me in the ground.
Its a Hot Rod 50,from '92,number 165 hand built by Michael Soldano.

I always said I'd be buried with my Peavey Vandenberg but it might end up with one of my kids.

I don't even wanna know what that amp cost you. Suffice it to say I seriously doubt if I could afford it.

Also, what model Jackson is that? It certainly resembles a Dinky but the body has some additions goin' on like the custom looking pickguard and the fixed bridge.

Actually, that amp is one of my ebay deals of the century.A guy had it as a backup amp, almost since it was new.Got it for a little over 1 large. It is THE brown sound amp.
Funny thing.....My son was born on 10/31/92........The records from Mike Soldano show that the amp was built within a few days of his birth.Weird destiny typpe of thing I guess.

My back up WAS a Mesa Boogie MK III blue stripe Simul Class. That amp was given to my son on his birthday a few weeks ago as an early inheritance.

The Jackson was built for me by Grover Jackson, around '83 if I remember right.

It was a Dinky neck through with a Floyd. That guitar has been broken into pieces at least three times, and the headstock was snapped off twice.

On the last go round,I filled in the routes for the Floyd Rose, and put a bridge and tailpiece from an old Les Paul on it.Loaded it with an EMG 81.

The guitar sounds and plays unbelievably.

Maybe we should make a guitar thread???? I want to see what you guys have.

In a former life I too was in a band, for about ten minutes. Then the Rick stereo bass got stollen, and it was no more for me.

So with all you axmen out there, who do you listen to for inspiration. Clapton, Satriani, S.R.V., Zappa, or do you go newer like Zack Wylde, or Kirk Hammet?

Just curious

Queen, Skynerd, Journey, Speed waagon, Hendrix, Dire Straits, Most of the '70-80's hair bands, early Beatles and Stones and Beach Boys, etc. Oddly enough, I don't listen to much anymore, especially when I'm working with my customs.. Too distracting.. My cheepy guitar collection is pictured elsewhere, I'll be happy to post the pictures here if requested.. I think a new thread would be a great idea.. But I think a new forum would be even better.. What do you think, Hank?? Is it feasible??

Ehh wouldn't you know it. Used to have a pic or two on this computer and now they're gone. Gonna have to make more.

I'm an 80's guy and that means hard rock/metal for me by and large. I certainly appreciate players like Clapton, SRV, David Gilmour, and the like but the ones that trip my trigger are people like Vinnie Vincent, Mick Mars, Paul Gilbert, Van Halen (of course), Randy Rhoads and folks like that.

I'm also a big fan of Neal Schon (Journey fame) and Neil Geraldo (Pat Benatar) and think those two guys are seriously underrated.

And one that might surprise is I like Brad Paisley. I like a guy that can seriously play that six string strapped to him rather than simply using it as a prop.

You mention Zack Wylde...that boy has some serious chops. He and Jake E. Lee could whip out some butt bustin' harmonics.

After close to 40 years of steady guitar playing,I dont listen to music as much as I do write it.After awhile,if you keep at it and work hard at it,you find a voice of your own on the guitar and your own way.

My favorite band for awhile now has been Tool. Also into a lot of orog rock, like Planet X.But Tool......wow.The way those guys can twist and turn a basic seed of an idea just blows my mind.

Influences????? I do a lot of shred stuff,Vai,Satch, etc.

But......I am firmly rooted in the blues and old school stuff.Jimmy Page was the reason I started playing. And of course,Clapton and Jeff Beck to this day is a HUGE influence on my playing.

I've been tire of the jouney/boston/kansas thing for a couple of decades now. If I hear "ridin' the storm out" one more time, I'll slit my wrists.

I just can't help it. There is so much energy in the newer stuff. Tool is a good band, also salyva (sp) Godsmack, Drowning Pool, are all good. And then there's the mighty Metallca.

You want a guitar story. Not long after meeting my wife some 13 years ago, she brought home a little old guitar her dad picked up for her somewhere in the late '70s, a yard sale thing or something. She never used it, it was sitting in the case in her closet and knowing I was into guitars she brought it home. Pop open the simple fake alligator case, and laying inside is a near mint Cherry '58 Les Paul Junior...original and untouched. Soapbars and all. And of course, it had with it a nice old Gibson Skylark amp. 5W all tube, original Gibson speaker, one knob for volume. Talk about sweet sounding.

Of course, as my luck would have it, I'm a lefty. :freak:

Definitely leave it with the kids.....they will appreciate it, as I know personally. Trust me. Here's why......

Might as well admit it at this point that after a 22 year hiatus frrom any involvement with playing and collecting vintage instruments, I recently took up plectrum jazz banjo simply for my own amusement. Why? Because the old man decided that he wanted me to have my inheritance while he's still here. He was looking to move a few out of his growing collection (for fear that my mother was going to grab one and give him an "el-kabong" for having too many, I believe).........and gave me my pick of the litter......a 1929 Bacon & Day Silver Bell "Sultana" that is in better shape than I am.

I know this isn't as cool to some guys as Strats and Les Pauls, but the old man didn't have a Rickenbacker bass to pass on ;) (which I also played in a rock cover/originals band in my younger days)

Now moving on to relearn "The 12th Street Rag".......

It could be done Rudy, but the nuts (the thing the strings sit in, top of the neck and at the bridge) would need to be reversed, to accomodate the different sized strings.. The bridge wouldn't be as big an issue as the neck, which would most likely require surgery to switch..

Not to mention that all the tome and volume controls kill your picking hand because they are on top instead of the bottom.

Hendrix did it,but mainly out of necessity.

No need to apoligize for playing the banjo.I have always wanted to give it a shot.

Thanks, Mike. There were a number of professional quality makes of 4-string banjos during the jazz boom of the 20's and 30s, inluding Vega, Paramount, Weymann and Gibson. But for my money, none had the power and tone of a B&D Silver Bell. My father still has one that's even nicer, but naturaly, it wasn't one that's leaving his collection ;)

Bela is great, but he plays a 5-string. Not quite the same beast in terms of the methods and types of music played, but the instruments are definitely blood related. Plectrum is played with a single flat pick and used moreseo for chord melody style of playing, as in New Orleans style jazz. Some noted players of four string plectrum through the years have been Roy Smeck, Eddie Peabody, Perry Bechtel and Don Van Palta.

Thanks, Joe. As much as it means to me that he left me this, I know he's getting a charge out of seeing it sitting in my lap while getting the chance to work on some duos together. He's getting up there now and I know that I won't have him forever. It makes me happy knowing that it's making him happy too. He's a really good hearted guy, for sure.
