I have a Briggs 15hp ohv Ic Gold, model- 28N707, Type- 0160 01, Code- 9409124A. It smokes a bit after it warms up and when you put it under a load when the deck is on. I planned on getting a new head gasket, adjusting the valves and getting new rings. My questions are, what is a good compression reading for this engine, I did a compression test today and ive got 100 lbs, is this good or should I replace the rings. The other question is, what is the clearance between the valve and lifter, I think these got a little loose. Oh and one other thing, what is the air gap between the armature and flywheel. If anyone has an electronic manual that would be great, the motor is on my 10 year old craftsman rider and its still in awesome shape. Thanks, Dutch

The above link will provide you with specs for your engine.

100 lbs is not bad, but I would look for around 130. It could be a leaking head gaskets, valves or rings and possibly a combination of two or more of these.

10 years of use is pretty good for this engine, so it may be time for a little TLC...
