This fine display case made from steamed beech seems to be purpose made for boxed Lesneys. It was a gift from a friend who found it in her uncle´s basement (no cars ,only dust). There are 15 rows of 7 compartments , and each small shelf slides out so that the snug fitting Lesney boxes can be removed without damage. Each shelf is wide enough for 3 cars or 1 box,1 car and a tidy space.
So I have filled it with an assortment of cars that anyone might expect to find in a small toyshop in 1973 (there are 2 beaters no 2 and 22,and 2 fakes no8 and 53).

Does anybody out there feel like sharing uptodate pix of the most recently re-arranged display that they have? I moved around lots of cars this past weekend..........energised by the full moon as its not yet spring here for a few more weeks

And all the space freed up by the cars in this wooden display and the yellow plastic display has allowed a bit more space and focus in the cabinet that 5 years ago was able to contain all my Lesneys.
Today the top shelf represents SF castings that I had a child, bottom shelf is late 1960s regular wheels, middle shelf right is the regular wheels castings I had as a child and middle shelf left is pre 1965 cars that best fit the gas station

And for all those who like Lesneys other big rival of those days.....

Your childhood collection and mine have a lot of similarities my friend!
Did you have them in a Lesney case?
Mine was (is) the 48 holer with a the #41 GT 40 on it. We should start a thread showing our first cases, huh?

I only have 4 cases, and none from my childhood. The 48 car Ford GT case has Playarts inside, this 24 car case houses my dream selection of transitionals....imagine finding a case at a flea market containing these 24 cars and being told that they are wun doller each:wave:

I can't belive that nobody here have any coments on the ultra-rare in this picture
I was at the same venue where sms88 picked it up for a few bucks, I had the fortune to handle it (so hard to give it back to my buddy after discovering that it was genuine )
It's pretty obvious what model I'm refering to, so sharpen up guys

that is awesome. glad it was you that found it.:thumbsup:
i think the reverse wrecker is one of the biggest topics in the hobby for good and bad.
would it be possible to have a picture beside the common rw wrecker ?
i think we had a little talk about this model awhile ago and it being a pre production.
that’s the story i have always heard and that the overall boom was thinner than later models.

off the subject a little bit.
the 1970 reverse wrecker in my opinion is where the hobby finally came to boil.

here is a paragraph from early 1970 non matchbox collectors paper.
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/1333/13wrecker1q.jpg
notice the mention of three dozen and not the usual two dozen and that they were lost in the mail.
that was the story if anyone ask where they were from until it became a problem.
it was more than the line worker sneaking them out the door, supposedly it was some in management that also help out. some collectors had a models in many different colors and i believe some of the rarest models fall into this category.

Welcome back & thankyou Mountain for sharing the news clipping. If they lied about the quantity ,2 or 3 dozen, and about distribution (random accident or directly from a factory employee) then the claims about the axles can also be false. Today, the 2 or 3 dozen 1970 production are all acknowledged to have crimped axles as per 1950s, not peened as per 1960s, plus standard thick booms, paper stickers and no silver trim. The original 1964 items have thin booms, grey hooks, silver front trim ,decals and wheels from the then new size moulds with Lesney embossed as we discussed on an old thread here.
The story that goes around these days is that Lesney approved the colours only to have sponsers BP veto them after a large quantity of boxes had already been made.
There are of course hundreds of home made reverse colour wreckers in existence, many of the best of which have been made and openly sold as fakes by a well known MCCH poster

Here are the comparison shots showing the slimmer boom, and my needlework to poke the loose light back into the roof socket - I will find a genuine gray hook for this in september or october when our toy fairs restart

thanks for the additional photos and what a mind blowing find.:)

did the cross brace near the tow hook break off or are there no signs of a brace ?
the only early picture (circa 1970) i have of a reverse wrecker is this one. it looks like an overall thinner boom or maybe that is the picture angle. do you think there is third version of the boom ?
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8348/13reverse4.jpg

to add more to the tale of later reverse wrecker.

Yes indeed, the cross brace has been broken off the tip of the boom -clearly this has not survived its time in the playroom without scars and this weakness in the boom justifies Lesney´s efforts to make it stronger. When i find a grey hook ,I will have to be very careful inserting it because without the crossbrace the booms are too close together.I dont know if there is a 3rd Lesney version of the boom, but i suspect not,or it would have been recorded by now!
Interesting typed comments, I guess from Harold Culpits to his friends in the club? They imply he knew the identity of the collector who distributed the crimped models in the USA and another collector who probably faked his own and wasnt welcome in the club.
A few other playworn examples like mine have been found for pennies being sold by non collectors at bootsales in the London area in recent years. I found this one at our local toyfair here in Copenhagen, being sold by an elderly woman with around 50 other mostly Teknos ,who may well have been the widow of a collector. I suspect that this reverse wrecker that I have was a mid 1960s sales sample supplied to the Lesney rep for Copenhagen, who in turn gave it to a child, and then was found at a fleamarket by somebody connected to the old lady who sold it to me for a mere 50 crowns (about $8).
I have handled the genuine cream 62 Cougar with white seats and talked to 2 guys who have handled the genuine seagreen plastic baseplate Opel Diplomat that both turned up here in Copenhagen toy lots for pennies- BUT ONLY 1 of each known in the small Danish Lesney fraternity.
I have also bought items from a dealer who made his career running his own independent toyshop from 1967 - 2004.Not only did he know the long serving Lesney rep personally, he ended up starting his own toy collection and dealing seriously on the side when Mettoy went belly up and he was able to buy up 15 years worth of Corgi sales samples which included some prototypes - sadly he doesnt know who got the Lesney sales samples!
