i am considering giving a Stanley Kubrick boxed set to someone as a Xmas gift. Does anyone here know if the versions of the films "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Spartacus" are the "unrated" versions or the theatre versions?

I understand that these films were edited to secure lower ratings for theatre release.

thanks

I don't believe there is a Kubrick box-set which includes both movies. Kubrick was basically a director-for-hire on "Spartacus".

I believe all the versions of Spartacus on DVD are the "unrated" version, mostly because of the restored Tony Curtis/Laurence Olivier 'oyster' scene which is ridiculously tame by today's standards.

There is only one review that mentions anything but I had heard differently. Was hoping someone actually has this set and can enlighten me.

thanks for the responses thus far.

Yep, both the original Spartacus DVD and the Criterion version both use the restored cut that was released theatrically years ago. Apparently the old version is only available on VHS.

If it's for a real fan of the film, the Criterion version is best. However the focus of the extras is more on Kirk Douglas than Kubrick.

Well, not only that, Douglas also doesn't have much nice to say about Kubrick.
