Just picked up a Slash and was thinking of running li-po battery. Can I use the
stock speed control or do I need a special one like if I was running brushless ?

A bunch of us race the slash with lipo's and the stock speedo. It does not have a lipo cut off so some caution should be used when bashing but when racing for 5 minutes you don't have a problem running the battery too low.
