View Full Version : Race Setup
DustinSS 11-13-2008, 06:47 PM Afternoon all,
I have a 2 lane, analog SCX track with the Ultimate Racer 3.0 management system, and am thinking of holding our first "official" race. Thing is, it's kind of an introductory thing...I own about 30 cars, and there are 5 or 6 guys interested in it, but they don't have cars. I have about 8 muscle cars and 7 or 8 "GT" cars, plus odds and ends of others.
Anyhow, the question is, what would be a good way to setup a race and a ladder? Are there certain procedures used for qualifying or choosing cars that you guys have found to work? I know I could make up about anything, just wondering if there's a way to set something up like that, maybe even with "breakout" racing...
Thanks for any info!
Dustin
NTxSlotCars 11-14-2008, 09:34 AM What we've been doing, and having a blast at, is having "IROC" races. What you do is find two of your cars that run really close to each other, and leave those cars on their lane, then rotate the drivers through the lanes. That way, everyone drives the same cars in the same lanes, and truly the best driver wins the race. With your cars, you could split it up into a Muscle car/Trans Am race, and a GT race, and even another.

tjettim 11-14-2008, 01:21 PM Yep-IROC is the way to go.
Mexkilbee 11-14-2008, 03:39 PM And I third that, motion carried, so let it be said, so let it be written, IROC.
AfxToo 11-14-2008, 08:37 PM I do like having IROC in the mix, it's a good drivers class. At the same time I also like to be challenged in the building department, so the building, test, tune, and racing classes are fun too. I also love painting. One thing we've done on the IROC scene is to have drivers tune and prep the IROC cars prior to the race. That way some of the drivers get to exercise their building and tuning skills and have some pride in having the "fastest rocket out there" even if everyone benefits equally from their skills. Rotate the build assignments if you have more drivers than you have cars.
The name of the game is to mix things up. Run different race formats, chassis types, body styles, etc., just to keep it fresh and exciting. Variations on a theme, like the race-tuned-IROC that I mentioned above, are great ways to inject some different kinds of excitement into the game. You could for example have several sets of IROC cars, with each set being a different class, body style, setup, or whatever, and after they are run and beat on they are put in storage until the next race. The next time that class comes up for a race the car-tuner-guys are given say 15-30 minutes before the race to prep the cars that have been inactive since their last race. Maybe have the IROC drivers vote for the best tuned car. Think outside the box.
