View Full Version : HO to Digital 1/32???
RiderZ 11-07-2008, 08:41 PM Hey everyone.Lately i've been wrecklessly eyeballing the SCX Digital 1/32 setup.I'm really liking the pit lane stuff. My problem is of course in this economy is money.I'm looking at close to a $1000 for all of the SCX Digital stuff i want (need)! I want (dont want) to ebay all of my HO equipment to fund this digital endeavor. My question is what is all this stuff worth? I originally purchase a Tomy Big Block Battlers set and then the Super Int. set.Plus numerous other single track peices to fill my 4'X11" table. All of the cars i have are mostly SG+,SRT,G3 & Wizzard cars.Of course all of the cars have the necessary hop-ups.The track is powered by a Pyramid 0-30V 5amp adjustable P/S with four Parma 45ohm controllers. Also a box full of HO replacement parts & tools. If i were to put all of this stuff up for sale would i be even close to the dollar amount needed to purchase the SCX equipment???
All of this stuff is well maintained & in excellent condition.Whats it worth to the slotcar hobbyist.Should i sell it as a whole or try to break it up as a car lot & track lot. This is a very tough decision folks-beleive me!!!
Any suggestions are welcome.

BRPHO 11-07-2008, 09:56 PM Wow!
What a great track layout and collection of cars!
I wish I had the track and cars you have currently!
Where to start?
I too sold off a huge collection of Ho like yours years ago when I was tempted by 1/32.
Today I regret it......
Needless to say I know longer have the 1/32 after getting in deep with 150+ cars at one point when I was club racing and I would have to say it didn't give me anymore satisfaction than my Ho did.
The 1/32 is gone, my original collection of Ho is gone, now I have started over in Ho a little over a year ago trying to collect back the Ho cars I had a number of years ago.
I personally found that I was much happier with Ho.
A little less detail on the cars mind you but I don't have to worry about knocking it off the cars when racing either.
1/32 is way more expensive also compared to Ho.
I guess you need to find what makes you happy personally!
I would really think about what you have in Ho before you decide to sell it all off just to start over in 1/32.
I think you will find the 1/32 will not give you anymore pleasure than your ho currently.
Anyways just my two cents from someone who has already been down this road before and come full circle back to Ho again.......
Good luck on whatever you decide and your future endeavors.......
I personally would be hard pressed to part with what you have personally though......

1976Cordoba 11-07-2008, 11:15 PM That's too nice a collection to sell off -- you'd only get a fraction of what it cost you.
Buy a 1/32 set maybe, couple cars, but keep the HO stuff & the track.
Tycoarm 11-08-2008, 12:55 AM DON'T DO IT!
I also dove into the 1/32 scale and luckily for me I knew it was just going to be a side interest. The room you'll need to have a good running layout without having it all compressed into a small space only leads to some basic and sometimes bland layout combinations.
A 4X8 table will handcuff you to a two lane layout and restricting the creativity for interesting layouts as well. You will be forced to run the basic long straight along the edge of the table, the typical esses with a couple of tight chicanes thrown in just to squeeze in a few more pieces of track.
Now while the scale does lead to some very impressive realistic and highly details cars, the down side is most likely two lanes unless you have the room for some wider table combinations.
I am by no means bashing the 1/32 scale I do enjoy it. I just think you need plenty of room to get the real effect and enjoyment from it.
I don't plan I getting rid of my 1/32 stuff just yet. I am planning on going the routed route:rolleyes: someday down the road.
rudykizuty 11-08-2008, 10:21 AM Z, I know exactly what you're feeling. Just the thought of changing lanes and making pit stops gives me goose bumps. Being in this less than 2 years, I've often wondered what I would do if I had it to do all over again.
But I have to say, you have amassed an incredibly sweet collection of all the modern day Tomy offerings.....and more. You also have a great looking track setup. I know what you're thinking, and I've thought about it myself, but a lot of what BRP has said crossed my mind. With that in mind, unloading all of what you've got in trade for what is right now a complete unknown seems like an awfully bold move. I like 'doba's idea. Stick your toe in the water first instead of just diving in.
Just my two cents (which doesn't even get ya penny candy these days) but I hope it helps. Good luck with your decision.
RiderZ 11-08-2008, 11:18 AM Thanks for all the replies & comments guys. Its as i am almost bored with the HO stuff..Anyways the digital is a two lane track that you can run up to 6 cars on it.The SCX track is 6" wide. The same as a Tomy four-lane setup.I could easily do the same layout with the SCX track on my 4'X11' table. But as you can guess i cringe at parting with my current collection.Maybe just investing in the "pitbox" set to start with.I do love bells & whistles though!!!
BRPHO 11-08-2008, 11:23 AM Hi Guys!
I have seen the other side of the mountain, It could be good for you, it could be bad!!! HA HA HA!!!!
I was not knocking 1/32 by no means but like you guys have stated if you have limited track table space the layouts will get old fast running around on a 4 x 8 area in 1/32. It will give you no more pleasure than what you have in ho now.
My suggestion like what you guys suggested is to keep all the HO stuff(especially the new vintage tomy srt cars!) and just pick up a 1/32 set to start with and expand from there.
Add as you can afford to but hang on to the ho stuff.
That way you have the best of both worlds to bounce back and forth between as your interests peek and wane over time.
Just my thoughts....... Been there, done that.......

BRPHO 11-08-2008, 11:26 AM I need to sit here and drool at your collection of Ho cars for awhile yet!!!! HA HA HA!!!
I love the track set up too!
I want all those new tomy srt vintage cars but they are so darn expensive!!!!
:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
NTxSlotCars 11-08-2008, 12:10 PM What if HO digital is just around the corner?
I mean, how far off can it be? I agree with everyone else on this thread, KEEP THE HO!!!!! I have some 1/32 and like it, but it takes a LOT of room to have the same thrill as HO. Why not hinge another layer on top of your existing table? You can put the HO on the top layer and 32nd on the bottom with buildings and stuff later. The best of both worlds, same room.
just a thought
Rich
AfxToo 11-08-2008, 08:32 PM I'd estimate that you could probably get a max of $600-$800 for everything shown, power supply, controllers, etc. If you peel the #29 sticker off - maybe a little more. ;)
I have nothing against the other scales, I race 1:32 too whenever I can, and if I could afford the real estate, time, and money that it would take to put together a decent 1:32 layout I would do it in a second. The biggest factor for me is real estate. My HO track is on a 15' x 10' L-shaped table and has a running length of around 82 feet, which is 1 mile in 1:64 scale. Even though my track is decent sized, it's still pretty darn small in proportion to the type of real track I'm trying to model. If I put a 1:32 scale track in the same space as my HO it would be even more minuscule in relation to a real track. That would be the only inhibitor for me. In my opinion, if you can bump your table up to say 6' x 20' then it would be a more compelling move if you want to maintain some semblance of reasonably sized racing action.
While I would not sell off the HO, I really can't speak for you because I have been involved with HO for over 40 years and it's ingrained in me. It's a way of life. I'm not searching for the next big thing and I don't feel that I even have enough time to devote to all of the aspects of HO and slot car racing that interest me, much less take my hobby in a totally new direction.
I've played around with digital and it is fun and offers a new twist on the hobby. As yet I have not seen digital done in a way that looks compelling for competitive slot car racing. The digital sets that I've looked at also had serious limitations with expandability and interoperability. I believe that for digital to be completely successful there needs to be an open standard for the controllers, the control protocol, physical layer standard, and the onboard interfaces so you can use any digital controller and any digital configured car on any brand track setup.
Will digital come to HO? Hard to say. The technology is certainly within easy reach. The biggest challenges lay in the packaging and building switching track pieces. A wireless control based solution may be a way to accelerate production by reusing technology developed for the micro RC cars. Again, bringing this to competitive racing would take a lot more effort than would developing the basic features needed to make a very attractive home set. In the end I don't feel that digital HO would do any better than the slotless HO sets of the past. It would have a niche market but the mainstream of HO slot car racing would still be firmly planted in the conventional slotted aspect of the hobby.

RiderZ 11-08-2008, 09:43 PM This is a very tough decision. As i do have alot of money invested in my HO equipment such as cars & track.I guess its the whole package with the Digital SCX PitBox system that has really piqued my appetite for more real scenario model car racing. All of the add-on features for the SCX track is too cool.I've done alot of research on the 1/32 Digital and SCX is at the top of my list.I know HO is in the midst of some good stuff with all of the new and proposed stuff that Tomy/Racemasters has on the horizon. The new Mega G's look to be very popular.
