Hello everyone,

Well its about that time again to get the clubs activities back in the public view. The indoor season is underway, a new larger and improved track is in place, and fun competitive racing is front and center at Battle Front ( www.battlefrontgaming.com (http://www.battlefrontgaming.com) ).

We plan on hosting several fun holiday events, and also large regional events this indoor winter season and we will use this thread and also our web site ( www.fatalimpactracing.com (http://www.fatalimpactracing.com) ) to announce those events.

I would like to ask that we keep this threads discussions on target and we use it to discuss the club, the activities we are planning, questions about the track and anything else that falls into that mindset. General chit chat should be kept in the other BFG threads please.

With that said, I would like to get some feedback on the new track layout at BFG. Those of you who have run on it, what do you think of it? Anything you think can be improved from what you see? We want to know what we can do to make this the best indoor facility in West Michigan and your feedback helps!

Thanks,

Keith (Revo)

I would like to just say thank you to all of the Fatal Impact members who are helping to make BFG what it is. It has grown way beyond what Jason and I pictured when we started. With my having a real job in addition to BFG, you have no idea how many things are happening because the club is pitching in and helping. I only hope everyone is getting as much enjoyment from their efforts as I am by providing a place for all of us to enjoy this hobby.

HUGE, mad props to the fellas that made this track happen. The layout is fun and fast and still technical. Work crew has done an outstanding job every week tweaking and improving the track. The added 15 foot of track length is very noticble over last year. There's a couple nice stretches to really let it rip. I don't believe we will have 13.5's outrunning mod this winter. Overall....two thumbs up!!:thumbsup:

Things to do: Has to be driver's stand ramp. I had heard awhile back about a removable or portable ramp and that sounded cool. I'm available on Friday days now if someone has a plan and needs a hand. We need to get it done.

I really enjoy the new layout. And enjoy racing there with everyone keep it up. As far as suggestions the only one is can the clutter around the exit door and drivers stand be moved( maybe it has already) it can be hard to maneuver around.

Yeah, I remember that from weds night and the spooktacular. I think those are shingles? Mike cleared the other end nice. Thanks for the heads up Duck.

Instead of just moving those, we need to get them up on the roof of the scoring tower so that wood does not rot up there. Might want to make that a project one of these weeks before the snow flies. I am not available this weekend, but next weekend I should be.

Stuff has been moved. Just remember, if we put the stairs/ramp up like it was last year, all the room will go away. They will take the place of what was sitting there leaving the 3 foot walkway between the stairs/ramp and the track.

If anyone has any creative ideas of how to make the stand accessible without a 24 foot set of stairs/ramp please PM myself or Revo with them. We have to have stairs for when the building inspector comes around. The idea has been to build a set of stairs as long as the old ramp was (24ft) and have OSB sides that fold down to turn them into a ramp for when our handicap racers come out.

Off road looks awesome now we can start to work on the oval. I liked the way the oval was watered last Saturday could we run it this way all the time? Verey little water it was perfect for me. I also liked the reminders gave the drivers before strating the race keep up the great work

I think that just about everyone agrees with you CJ, no water during the races is best. We may want to consider less water before the races even, its slick and muddy for the first two rounds most of the time. Just hit it with the broom a few times during the races and its great. Its good to water the crap out of it on non-race days, but when we are running on it, less water is best.

Yes, I havent had a chance to look at the data yet to see what I can do with it. I will have some time next week to go over it once and figure out how to make something worth while out of it.

I know the track was not watered at all on Sunday and Wednesday this past week. It was soaked the night before and left alone. I am thinking the slick, muddy is coming from the new sections that are worked on each week.

The oval water schedule has been a very, emphasis very, light watering between each round. We have not run the oval dry and everyone seems to like the current watering schedule.

We can run the track with less water yet (not watering on non-race nights would be the only option for less water), but the oval is already pretty "potholed" in places as a result of the current watering schedule.

The problem comes in that there is no time to repair the oval before racing Saturday afternoon if it gets torn up from Wednesday, Friday (big practice night) and Saturday morning off-road. We have to keep enough water in it to hold it together or all of our efforts to resurface the oval will be wasted when it falls apart again.

As to the oval, the plan is to drag it, scrape it, break it up, do something to it this Sunday after racing. Steve has obtained some "expanded metal" and we are thinking it might work like a cheese grater to cut down the high spots. If that doesn't work, we are looking at dragging it with a sheet of OSB with drywall screws sticking down about a 1/4 inch. This will give us Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday to have it back in shape for Wednesday night.

It really doesn't mater to me what the watering schedule is as long as the track is maintained and the oval is kept in a condition where the late models will be able to run on it. I know how much water it takes to provide a zero maintenance surface, but I understand if people want less water and are willing to take on the responsibility of maintaining/repairing the track.

Just let me know and I will adjust the watering schedules accordingly.

I'm thinking that we always will have some problems wtih potholes no matter what we do as far as watering. When you have to share part of the oval with the off road track it will be harder to maintaine that section of track and with the race schedule the way it is there is verey little time to work on either track. I know that the guys that run late models want a smoother surface to race on. I dont know if this will happen just for the fact we are a duel perpose track but wicih ever way we go with this I'll be there to race and have fun and support BFG and I'll countinue to sweep and fill some of the pot holes when i'm there you gentelmen do an out standing job and you will never please all the people that come through your doors but I for one like it. Thank you for a place to race in the winter.

I had a few minutes to go through the new section on the www.fatalimpactracing.com web site for "Race Results". I would like to thank Steve for getting that up there. For anyone who has not checked it out yet, it has some great information in there available for you to view. It goes as far as giving lap by lap times for every race. Check it out here:

http://www.fatalimpactracing.com/downloads/20081105/Reports/IndexFile.html

This is the index page for the race results for November 5th. Lots of good data in here to sort through. I will start to play around with a Power Ranking system now that I have some data to work with. It will be a points system (0 - 100), but I have not decided if 100 or 0 will be the best. Going to work on it today a bit if I can make some time for it.

Hey guy's I was checking your thread out and saw that you were on topic about track maintenance. We are going to try this product www.MidwestInd.com on our track this spring. The solution is about $90 for 5 gallons and can be thined with water. From what I am told BMX tracks are starting to use this on their tracks in high erosion area's. We are going to use it on our jump face's and turns. Just thought I would be a nice guy and share some info.... Have a great season this year.

No membership fee to race at BFG, although joining Fatal Impact ($25 per year) gets you $1 off every time you come out and some other nice perks at local hobby shops.

John will have to reply on rental rates. I think it depends on whether or not its a two heats and a main race or a three heats and a main race. Either way, it's pretty reasonable. BFG track thread is at: http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=233087

Only extra cost would be if you wanted to run all day. I will do $40 for all day and you would be eligible for trophies. Otherwise, $22 and you can run your choice of off-road in the morning or oval in the evening.

Went out and got a half dozen 12' 2x10s for the stair stringers for the new stairs/ramp. I have the cuts drawn out and ready to start cutting on them.

This is a project that is best tackled when I am able to be involved. It has to be done just so to meet code. I know what it needs to be, but I am not that good at putting it down on paper.

The first chance to take the existing stairs down and replace them without interfering with the race schedule will be Sunday evening. If anyone is available it would be much appreciated. If necessary, I will be working on them Monday evening as well.

I had a conversation with our illustrious ROAR regional leader, Mr. Rott today about some possible indoor off-road and dirt oval races. Before we even get started with this idea, I wanted to throw this out to all the guys who race at BFG, also the guys who would help run the event Fatal Impact, John and Jason, and everyone else from around this region. Is there interest in hosting a ROAR sanctioned State or Regional Indoor Off-Road Championship and also a State or Regional Indoor Dirt Oval Championship at BFG? Thoughts and opinions from everyone are welcome.

Roar dirt oval championship bring it on. I'd help out with that and I already know it would be of the same high cailaber event that the region 5 race was. We need to soread the word that dirt oval is not dead in west MI but getting bigger and what better way to do this than have a big race.

I am all for it as well. It is even easier to run an event indoor than it was outdoor. I will talk to the landlord about using the space where the bleachers usually sit on their side for pit space. We can make sure to schedule it for a weekend when there is no hockey, wrestling, or roller derby. Bring it on!!!!

If people wanted to run a big offroad event, we could move Oval to Friday night so that we could make sure people from out of town had an opportunity to come and get back home during the weekend. I think it would be kind of cool to run oval on a different night to mix it up sometime anyway.

I'm a little bummed. Went to cut the stringers for the stairs tonight and discovered that whoever used my circular saw last (I am assuming when the sides were cut for the jumps) broke the handle on it and no one bothered to tell me. I tried to fix it and screwed it up good (I think I put a screw in too deep in the wrong place and it cooked the motor.)

Anyway, the stringers aren't cut and I don't have a saw to do it with.

I have been thinking it is time for some new tools, but it is kind of like losing an old friend. I have had that saw for over 20 years. I want to shop around before I run out and buy something to replace it.

Like I said, I will be there by 7:30 for sure.

Edit: Even if someone from the Tuesday day crew could stop out for a few minutes tomorrow night so I could show you first hand what needs to be done, what I don't get done tomorrow night could get finished on Tuesday.

Its been a week since I posted the question about hosting a ROAR event this winter and I have not heard anyone comment here or at the track that they are opposed to it. For that reason I will continue the discussions in regards to getting this event scheduled. I will need some help in regards to the dirt oval program, kzoo....you game to run that program for this event?

kzoolou
11-19-2008, 11:20 PM
I think a big time oval race would attract a fairly large crowd in the winter, although I'll admit I don't really know how big that pool of Oval Racers is. We're getting over 30 entries on most Saturdays right now and we haven't really started pulling in the Dirt Late Model crowd yet.

I would guess we would get 60 to 75 entries minimum with the potential for a hundred or so if we got a big pull from out of the area. Might be more than that out there if offroad guys decide to run with us. Gotta do a good job of bringing in the not so fast guys like me (way more of us than there are fast guys). I had a blast at the fall Offroad ROAR event and I had no chance of winning.

I'm in

I talked to Terry rott at the region 5 offroad race and he gave me the impression that roar dose'nt have an oval program has this changed or am I wrong in my understanding? Whatever the case may be I still think this would be a graet program. I know that their are many oval racers out there that would come to this type of event. I guess it would come down to how the event was promoted and when it would take place. I still say I'd be up to helping out with this

I had a conversation with Terry yesterday, and John last night. The plan is we will be hosting a dual event at BFG. February 7 will be a ROAR Off-Road race, and February 8 will be a ROAR Dirt Oval race. All the details will be coming shortly, but this is the plan thus far.
