View Full Version : The Day The Earth Stood Still trailer
Jim NCC1701A 11-04-2008, 05:28 AM It looks interesting.
Although whether it ends up being a visual effects fest at the expense of a decent story remains to be seen. Only a month to wait though.
jheilman 11-04-2008, 11:20 PM I'll go see it. Looks intriguing. Jennifer is always a treat. And...did I actually see Gort in the last few seconds of the trailer?
Jim NCC1701A 11-05-2008, 04:53 AM Yeap, that was the briefest of glimpses but it was Gort.
Roland 11-05-2008, 09:51 PM I'll give it a chance. But, I have a gut feeling that the Klatuu character won't be as likable as the original. The new one appears to be a cold person instead of a warm person.
BluntFronts 11-06-2008, 03:14 AM I read that Keanu said that his Klaatu is slightly different than the original, and it didn't sound like a change that I would have chosen to make. But then I don't think I would have ever chosen to remake the movie in the first place, either!
I'm not in love with that spaceship design at all; it reminds me of some other typical sci-fi stuff that has already been done many, many years ago.
John P 11-06-2008, 08:47 AM I'll give it a chance. But, I have a gut feeling that the Klatuu character won't be as likable as the original. The new one appears to be a cold person instead of a warm person.
In other words, Keanu being himself.
At least we didn't get a comedy remake featuring the star of that hit A Night in the Mueseum, called The Day the Earth Stood Stiller.
jheilman 11-07-2008, 11:37 PM Yeah, but now that the idea is out there...only a matter of time. Thanks! Owen Wilson as Gort?? :p
deadmanincfan 11-08-2008, 03:09 AM ...get the # 11 X-Acto blades and the Apoxie-Sculpt, boys...
Lloyd Collins 11-12-2008, 07:30 PM I Hate Remakes!!
Jaruemalak 11-12-2008, 08:26 PM I Hate Remakes!!
Oh, come on... not ALL remakes are a bad thing. Remember, the Humphrey Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon WAS a remake! It only proves that sometimes Hollywood gets it right.
(That said, I will agree that The Maltese Falcon is more the exception, rather than the rule.)
Lloyd Collins 11-13-2008, 02:17 AM I prefer to think of.....King Kong.
spyhunter50 11-13-2008, 12:32 PM I prefer to think of.....King Kong.
i don't want to think about that stupid movie....
Jaruemalak 11-13-2008, 06:51 PM I prefer to think of.....King Kong.
Which one, the Dino DeLaurentiis/John Guillermin version from 1976 or the Peter Jackson one? Personally, and this is ONLY my opinion, I didn't care for either, although I'd take the Peter Jackson one over the DeLaurentiis one any day.
Has anyone checked out the five minute long Day The Earth Stood Still trailer on Ain't It Cool News. I admit, while I'm not really in the mood for a remake of DTESS, the long trailer does look interesting.
Now, all we have to wait for is J. Michael Straczynski's version of Forbidden Planet.
Nova Designs 11-14-2008, 10:15 PM More and more, I'm with you Lloyd. Remakes suck.
Come on... The Maltese Falcon? REALLY? That movie was made more than 60 years ago! Its hardly relevant as an example of Hollywood's brilliance.
ClubTepes 11-18-2008, 12:56 AM This one looks really cool.
Can't wait.
spyhunter50 12-10-2008, 10:28 AM it look's good...........
Mitchellmania 12-10-2008, 10:46 AM Yes I will see it- And I think the movie will draw interest for people to see the original version.
JeffG 12-10-2008, 12:22 PM I'm not too sold on this one yet. It appears it will be the equivalent of a special effects reach-around though! I don't mind Keanu Reeves at all as an actor and he can actually be pretty good in the right film, but I don't know if he can pull off the charm and purposeful insight that poured off Michael Rene in the original. I hope it's more than just an FX fest because in the right hands it could be pretty good.
Remakes are largely hit or miss. Though some would disagree, I thought the remake of War Of The Worlds was done really well for instance. And for the life of me, I can't understand why some folks hated Peter Jackson's King Kong, which I thought was awesome enough to make me tolerate Jack Black! Anyway, if I read enough good reviews about TDTESS when it's released I'll see it, but if the reviews pile up in the bad column, I'll see it on cable at some point.
Old_McDonald 12-10-2008, 03:16 PM Does this movie even have a ship? All I saw were cheap lights in the sky
spyhunter50 12-11-2008, 10:44 AM that king kong movie sucks big time........
JeffG 12-11-2008, 10:54 AM To each his own.
"your planet?"
i love it
ill be seeing it
Carson Dyle 12-11-2008, 06:02 PM Does this movie even have a ship?
Yeah, but it's lame. Unless your world is rocked by the sight of a big chrome ball, that is.
I've seen the movie, and while it doesn't profoundly suck, it's certainly nothing to get excited about.
To tell you the truth, I've forgotten most of it.
Jim NCC1701A 12-11-2008, 06:30 PM The characters just didn't engage for me.
Jennifer Connelly might as well have been reprising her role in Hulk, she just came over as one dimensional.
The others, I dunno. Contractural obligations? The army commander (don't know the actor's name but I just saw him in a advert for Prison Break the night before last) was way OTT.
Overall, whatever message it was trying to say just got lost.
Another case of good trailer, bad movie.
Just my two cents, YMMV.
Nova Designs 12-12-2008, 03:33 PM Here's a review from CNN... about what I was expecting to hear,

Carson Dyle 12-12-2008, 06:59 PM I was surprised by Kenneth Turan's positive review in the LA Times.

I generally tend to agree with KT's take on things, but in this case I feel like we saw different pictures.
