View Full Version : 1/4 scale in general
brokecrewchief 11-03-2008, 11:09 PM i am very new to the scene , i build full size 360 sprinters (asphalt) and started lookin into 1/4 scale about a month ago, was really close to buyn a wcm but decided to build my own from scratch, let me tell you what this is all i can think about, its so bad iam gettin nothing done on the big cars...
heres where iam confused , why isnt there more of these things around?, the nearest track to me is pasco....what is you folks ideas on what can better the QS scene? i did a bunch of searchin on the web and i see that there are alot of websites that are no longer "on line", how is it that people will spend 1500 bux on a top of the line 1/8th scale buggie and have half the adjustability and of course half the size? i guess iam just rambling but it kinda bugs me all the people that i have came into contact with that are associated with QS are the greatest, am i alone in thinkin this way???
willyplankhead 11-04-2008, 02:18 AM one thing that can make the QS scene better is show up to your track thats the main thing and support the hobby the best you can its looking like my track might have 4 classes on regular basis next year sprint being the newest addition
As far as more tracks, shoot they are expensive to build. The one in Pasco was and we are in the process of putting in some more major improvements this winter. We have gone out to run in parking lots, not much help there. Internet sites would be great but they seem to not last long, or not updated that often. 1/4 scales are also not easily bought at your local hobby store, as other scales are.
chuck_thehammer 11-04-2008, 04:29 PM I am just getting into quarter scale, I am lucky that there is a great quarter scale track within 20 minutes of my house.
I think there could be more interest in this size of sport if there were adds in the local newspapers, not City wide, just the small local papers.
Have each heat so all the drivers in that heat are as close as possable in skill and speed, have the slower ones run first and next faster and so on. I think the fans might enjoy the show more. plus say to view the race is FREE...

jbell31 11-05-2008, 07:19 AM Well brokecrewchief (BTW that is one of the best handles i've seen in a while) QSAC has been increasing it's membership base for the last several years. Almost all the tracks have seen 1 to 5 new people each of the last two years get into the hobby.
The ecconomy has hit us pretty hard and the growth factor has changed. With that said, I have suggested that we get a PR person to help mentor us and put out media kits for the bigger races. Getting the exposure is not as easy as you would think.
The R/C mags don't cover us like electric or nitro cars and buggies. The manufactures all have other jobs or professions. That makes it pretty hard to fork over big money for advertizment, Web adminstration and filling orders.
It is even hard on distributers because of the shipping costs and time it takes to build a customer base and keep them happy.
It all takes money and time and of course effort on the part of QSAC officials. It's not a small thing, but I think we are making headway...
I have always thought and still think that for 1/4 scale to be as big as it used to be that it needs to go back to the basics, the main reason why it attracted people in the first place. SCALE LOOKS... without them its just a big car. Over the years the scale looks have been stripped away one piece at a time while increasing the price of the cars. This brings me to the question of, if your not going to make a scale looking car, whats the point of even making it out of tubing? That is the most expensive part of the car, if its not going to look like a car, why not atleast make it out of formed aluminum plate like 1/5 scale cars and reduce the cost by 30%???
AZOutlaw 11-05-2008, 12:32 PM I vote for Jim Bell as PR person! :)
IN2RACIN 11-05-2008, 01:25 PM I vote for Jim Bell as PR person! :)
I second that!

Keep him busy so he can't get that Truck any faster!
I vote for Jim Bell as PR person! :)
aracefan3 11-05-2008, 07:57 PM It always amazes me that in our area we have many thousands of people (a very low estimate in am sure) yet we only have 20 or 30 into this racing. Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown are in a triangle around my local track plus all the surrounding towns and communities.
When I talk to people about this they have one question, How much? When you say 2K gets you going they are the one going. People dont always think big picture. 2K is the majority of the cost and it isnt much every season after that.
We need to have more reporters on the evening news come do coverage of the big races so people know we are here and get their interest peaked. I started 1/10 scale after i saw it in the paper. If i missed that one article I would have never got started. Track Owners need to court the media. The media alone makes things happen and the local news coverage is free.
brokecrewchief 11-05-2008, 09:27 PM see this is what i mean not one single person out of like 9 replies had one bad thing to say about qsac, a race track, or even another person, to QSL, i know u have prob been around quit some time, ur coment about making chassis out of pre formed alum, makes me sad, iam havin a great time building mine out of tubing and tig welding it all together, but i do think they should go back to looking like real stock cars, just think of all your bitchin cars that you have on your website under my garage, how each and everyone is different and unique, to me it would suck if the only thing different on all those cars was the body...by no means am i throwing u under the bus, just coming from a "racecar builder", i respect your opinion very much, but think if we all went to pre formed alum chassis what happens to folks like WCM, PRO1? QSM? they go out of buis.
any way i go to bed thinkin about 1/4 scale and wake up thinkin about 1/4 scale, i canot wait to hear from u all about your ideas , maybe we can all brain storm and come up with something to bring in new folks.....
take care

MSadler 11-05-2008, 09:40 PM 1/4 scale racing without a doubt is cheaper in the long run than 1/8 or 1/10 scale when you think about how fast you go thru tires, electic motors, nitro motors, and so on. The up front cost is what really scares most people, but what we really are missing is our products being available in your local hobby shops!! So people dont see them and dont even know they exist! Most of your 1/10 and 1/8 scale tracks are also supported by a hobby shop. Maybe if we could all atleast get some flyers out to our local hobby shops to let exsisting racers know we are out there!
just my 2 cents worth
Tim Mc 11-05-2008, 09:46 PM brokecrewchief,
Here are a few pics of a 1/4 scale chassis built by a very creative designer Jamie B. They may or may not help you? Either way, the design is top notch.
brokecrewchief 11-05-2008, 09:46 PM that is a freakin great idea....to add to ur idea maybe since race season is over for the QS cars all of u that have a complete car could put it on display at your LHS with a list of web sites like qsac and such????? just brain storming:thumbsup:
brokecrewchief 11-05-2008, 09:50 PM TIM MC
now thats a true stock car that thing is sick....how does it turn???
Tim Mc 11-05-2008, 09:54 PM According to Jamie the car hooked up nicely. I don't know if he is still around or not? He built full scale race cars regularly. PRO1 owns his Sprint car design. TIM MC

MSadler 11-05-2008, 09:59 PM Tim are you talking about the Belfab sprint car?
Tim Mc 11-05-2008, 09:59 PM Yes...Tim are you talking about the Belfab sprint car?
MSadler 11-05-2008, 10:02 PM i thought that car was going to be built and sold have you heard anything?
Tim Mc 11-05-2008, 10:05 PM Mike, to be honest I haven't but then again I'm not into the sprint car scene. Maybe someone else has information to share? i thought that car was going to be built and sold have you heard anything?
Jamie was amazing, that dude could whip up a work of art over the weekend. Wonder what ever happened to him...
Brokecrew, I am with you man, believe me. I would LOVE to see these things go back to full cage scale cars. That was the day. PRC made one mean racing machine. Delara made a great looking car too, but from what I understand was more of a looker then driver. I have one but never drove it. Just cant do it!!
Mike Clark 11-05-2008, 10:57 PM Yep Look on the Pro1 web site.
Slider 11-06-2008, 08:52 AM You may want to contact Jim at Pro 1 about the Sprinter.
jbell31 11-06-2008, 11:11 AM Thanks for the kind words. My car is getting faster anyway Jeff. I'm going to rework the chassis a bit and see if i can get it even faster.
My sister-in-law has a PR marketing agency and does work in several states for mostly non-profit businesses and entities. I want to approach her with the idea of getting QSAC a significant boost in the arm, but get it in very specific markets. This is where it becomes a bit hard.
The question becomes, how to pay for it and what would we expect success in marketing to look like over all.
These are the things that the co-chairs would have to talk about, approve and the membership to drive. I can not act unilaterally to get this accomplished. It dosen't have to be my sister-in-law either, it was just a thought...
Jim, I think it would take more then just a PR person. I think it would help, but I think that guidelines would need to be made for all participating QSAC tracks. For example, ideas like, specatator area is manditory with seating, local signage with balloons? needs to be put on on race day pointing to the place of racing, welcome booth/table with flyers on "what is 1/4 scale" "where to get the cars" "rules". What is cool about the booth idea is that QSAC could design and standardize these and supply them to the tracks for a small fee with all the flyers and such, it could even include all the business cards of all the MFG's and could partially be paid by from them?
The tracks NEED to be inviting to outsiders so they are comfortable just "stopping by"
Now with that said... I honestly believe that someone needs to build SCALE looking cars again. Where you can take the body off and know what it is... WCM has stepped up to the plate somewhat whith there cage car. Look at other scales of cars, Associated just came out with a truck called the SC8 and its a trophy truck with very scale looks and a full cage. They recongnize there is a very large market for scale looking RC. HPI is slowly working there way toward this as well. I think this would really help get people excited about the scale again.
FMurry8995 11-06-2008, 02:33 PM A few years back QSAC had some tri fold flyers printed. I'm not sure if there are any left but I have passed out quite a few of them. I will see if there are any avalible. It was a nice color presentation with a list of manufactures and web site for QSAC.
I also agree that it would be nice to see a stock car look like a stock car when you pull the body work off. I would also like to see drivers in the cars again. Not only in open wheel cars but in every car. The extra weight is not a factor and it is on the left side where you need it.
Brent did some work along the guidelines of how to promote a local race and how to get exposure for the sport. I believe it is on the QSAC web site.
Fred, would love to see that flyer!

Slider 11-06-2008, 03:25 PM Racers for the most part keep this to themselfs, Rather than telling people about it. other than on a occasion they might have the car with them.and show someone. well big woopity doo. Till someone see's these pounders run they cannot grasp what it is all about.
We used to, in Yuk dirty word's these days. but in 10th scale we could get the local radio stations to tell folks all about this stuff at no charge. Today it is all about the beloved buck. Who has gone and asked if anyone whould donate some airtime, to tell people there is R/C racing on, at a certain location? give them dates and times. and to bring the family and kids out and watch.
Slider 11-06-2008, 03:36 PM But oop's I have seen a ton of folks turnout. But the racers filthy mouths run the folks off, for they don't want to hear that mess.
Think before you open your mouth, there are people watching this stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Id bet most, who have Children would put a whoop-in on that child if those words came outta there mouth. You can never take back a word that is spoken, so think before the mouth overrules.
This has run away alot of people, if you don't think so. Your sadly mistaken.
WOW, cool flyer and good guidelines. Someone really spent some time on it. I found this part interesting "Quarter scale cars are different from smaller radio control cars mainly
in size, true-scale appearance, set-up adjustability, and realism." Scale appearance and realism... two very important selling factors.
Slider, I experienced the same when I first went to a race track and it did turn me off. It really does seem better now, but I do see what you are saying. I really get the sence that everyone is super focused on the racing and there just is not much goofing around and relaxing? Maybe the heats are too close together? I dont know the answer to this, but how fun would it be to go to a track and relax, have a good time, joke around and make it inviting for EVERYONE. I think we all want this and some times it is like this, but how do we make it more consistant.
Slider 11-06-2008, 05:14 PM For Starter's, Everyone needs to realize they are in the PUBLIC EYE!!!!
If you want growth. No matter what the situation may be. Folks are watching.
When most go to work, do you cuss your boss etc. Don't think so, when out in a restaurant with family and friends do ya cuss one another. Don't think so, for most.
So when your representing your Hobby. Think of the surroundings other people, are watching.
I have seen a lot of potential racers run off by this. And seen a lot of racers run off as well, And probably most would have to agree. Now this is strictly my opinion and anyone can do whatever they want with it, it isn't for sale, it is free. But as for me. I will not tolerate it, but to a point. and I will simply go to the house. Another racer Gone!!! Paul
chuck_thehammer 11-06-2008, 05:23 PM This was not at a quarter scale track,
I have stopped racing at a track because of peoples bad mouth. and insults directed to a few people every week. The insults were NOT about me or at me.
I was lucky I was able to go to another track, other wise no racing..

Tim Mc 11-06-2008, 06:56 PM We all need to somehow dig deep down to become a PR person ourselves for QSAC, your local track & even your class. Yes, it’s true…Oval Magazines are expensive to advertise. So, quarter scale has to rely on the next best (if not the best) way to get the word out and that is by word of mouth. Invite friends, and then tell them to invite their friends. Post signs and flyers throughout your community of upcoming events. Put the track schedule on the flyer. If you add a picture, have someone stand next to the car to give the viewer and idea of the scale! What ever you do, it’s better than doing nothing at all!
Slider’s right, the attitudes hurt the attendance and can turn the most dedicated racers away. The forums are great tools but can also send the wrong message with heated threads. I’m as guilty as any for wearing my feelings on my sleeve. BUT… there’s nothing wrong being passionate about the hobby, we just need to do it in a tactful manner.
brokecrewchief 11-06-2008, 08:52 PM eveybody has a great point i cant wait to meet you all...
dizzy 11-07-2008, 12:54 PM I think it would be great to put drivers in the sprints, cars and trucks. It would be cool to have the cars look real on the track. It does not really matter what they look like under the skin at this point because most people just see the outside. we could all add a driver and the drivers net for not that much and we would look cool on the track. Does someone sell these? I would put them on both my cars.
