I have a newbie dirt oval track question...We are in the process of building a dirt oval flat track and are having problems getting the track smooth...The has very little no clay in it and seems to pack pretty well, but after scraping and rolling it with a 400lb drum roller it just seems to be still rough to run the pan style oval cars on...Its fine for our 1/8 and 1/5 scale cars but we just cant seem to get it smoothed out enough to race our 1/10 scale custom works cars on......Anyone have any tips or tricks to share?
Thanks!
Brian

maybe need to drag it with a wood pallot with some nails. add some weight to the pallot before u drag it. then get a piece of fine chain link fence and drag that afterwords. or maybe u could try a power trowel and see if that works.

The less clay you have will mean more maint. every week. I suggest getting down a top coat of clay and then drag with the pallet or fence as mentioned already, then if you want it really good you can rent a power trowel. soak the track to the point it still takes water, then trowel it. If you do it this way it will last for weeks with just some sweeping and watering. Plus keep the rubber tires off it use foams only.

the track i run on in Fruitport, MI owned by duke bradshaw, doesnt have that much maintenance, the track is all clay, no dirt and we dont run until sunset, keeps the water in the track, we run ntc3, gt and electric tc3 and tc4, custom works cars, but we dont run any 1/8 scale or 1/5 scale out here, atleast not yet. but every once in a while he takes his drag over the track backwards when its dry and fluffs it up, when hes done he wets it down and lets it sit. to get more info on how he does it he on here as duke bradshaw, look him up, hes been into oval racing for a ton of yrs so he should know how to do it.

Brian,
We have found something that actually smooths better than a nail board. Get yourself a piece of expanded metal. We have a 2' x 4' piece we put cinder blocks on and drag it behind a lawn tractor. It acts like a cheese grater, and shaves down the high spots and fills in the low spots with the pulverized mat'l. After the track is grated and smoothed, just pack it in with the tractor.
Works great for smoothing the track-
