View Full Version : Ron Howard & The Andy Griffith Show Fans
PhilipMarlowe 10-23-2008, 07:50 PM Have got to check out Ron Howards hilarious new short film, which reunites him with Griffith. Even the Fonz shows up!

That's some seriously good make-up work!
ynblood 10-24-2008, 12:27 AM Really Funny, Thanks for the link. Enjoyed that very much.
Mitchellmania 10-24-2008, 09:51 AM I just wish it wasn't a political ad.
PhilipMarlowe 10-24-2008, 10:49 AM I just wish it wasn't a political ad.
Let's not go there. I think most people are mature enough to appreciate the cleverness & humor of Howard's film even if they don't agree with what he's saying.
And c'mon man, seeing him & Griffith as Opie & Sheriff Taylor again is funny. Not to mention Richie Cunningham.
iamweasel 10-24-2008, 11:21 AM I found it really clever and appreciate Ron Howard going back to those characters after all this time. Loved seeing the Fonz doing his "I was wr..." line again.
JeffG 10-24-2008, 12:05 PM Outstanding!
Zorro 10-24-2008, 12:59 PM Griffith has long been active in North Carolina politics but this is the first time he has endorsed a national candidate. The scene with Griffith was shot in his backyard in Manteo, NC. Howard shot his part as Opie in California. The two separate takes were then digitally composited in post production. Amazing how much Howard looks like his childhood self with the help of a proper hairpiece.
maucutt 10-24-2008, 04:30 PM To take a show many of us grew up with, and loved, and turn it into a political add.
Very sad!
Zorro 10-24-2008, 05:16 PM To take a show many of us grew up with, and loved, and turn it into a political add.
Very sad!
I'm guessing you never saw "Return to Mayberry". Now that was sad. And this isn't an "add" in any conventional sense.
Eric K 10-24-2008, 05:37 PM I dunno. I get email like this from my right wing friends. I get email like this from my left wing friends. I kinda don't like to see more political stuff in a place like this, no matter how 'clever' or 'cool' or whatever you want to call it.
Carson Dyle 10-24-2008, 05:39 PM Damn Hollywood elitist liberals.
frankenstyrene 10-24-2008, 07:59 PM Saw this a couple days ago. Howard's political freedom of choice aside, the ad itself is not so much clever as whorish and just a tad too "Hey! Look how relevant I am!", imho...it's proof that just because one can do something, it may not be a good idea to do so. And I'd say the same thing if a bunch of conservatives did the exact same thing.
Someone kill it.
(this thread, I mean)
frankenstyrene 10-24-2008, 08:03 PM And you'd think a director of his caliber - who rightly goes through the trouble of filming Andy and himself in what's supposed to be the woods - would at least move the late model pickup from the shot behind him and Fonzie.
PhilipMarlowe 10-24-2008, 08:27 PM Opie whorish?
I think Howard says what he wants to say, effectively & humorously, without insulting ,dismissing, or demeaning anybody that may think differently than he.
A lot could learn from him.

Except for Sara Palin, but I guess that insults to her don't count, huh? Nothing political, or partisan there.

I think the insult was to Fonzie's "hearing".

David
What exactly was insulting? Fonzie was the idiot who mixed up "moose" and
"loose". You guys are really reaching here.
Roland 10-24-2008, 10:49 PM What a nice little funny video. I'm glad that Ron is a funny guy.
I find that I share his sense of humor as most people seem to.
Thanks for the quality comedy link.
El Gato 10-25-2008, 07:22 PM Except for Sara Palin, but I guess that insults to her don't count, huh? Nothing political, or partisan there.

I seem to recall the Fonz not hearing something correctly was like a running gag on the show. You know, someone says something, Fonzie misinterprets it and madcap hilarity ensues.
terryr 10-26-2008, 01:00 AM He vowed to never play those characters again and then broke his word to try and get his way. He IS political.
The video was so stupid it was funny.
Zathros 10-26-2008, 09:52 AM Yep...
Hollywooders will go out of thier way to get thier message across..Yul Brenner was once asked what he thought of his fellow actors getting politically active, and his answer was TERRIFIC..he ended it with "only a FOOL would listen to an actor"..
John P 10-26-2008, 10:02 AM Ron's political opinion is every bit as valid as mine.
I just don't happen to have access to tens of thousands of bucks worth of movie studio effects and makeup people, and I'm not friends with a bunch of famous classic TV stars who will donate their time to help me make a political advertisement thinly diguised as - well, actually that wasn't disguised at all.
frankenstyrene 10-26-2008, 12:23 PM If John Voight, in his old Midnight Cowboy getup, teamed up with Kelsey Grammer as Frazier, and they both started espousing the candidate of their choice in those characters, I'd be just as insulted by their stupid wh*rishness as I am by Howard's, et al. Would like to think others would too, but who knows...politics is a low business to start with but to stoop to that level is...well, I've used the right word twice already.
Zathros 10-26-2008, 05:06 PM Careful Members..Lest the mighty Moderator may strike down his Hammer from Asgard and close this thread...
scotpens 10-26-2008, 05:48 PM Careful Members..Lest the mighty Moderator may strike down his Hammer from Asgard and close this thread...I think we're still on safe ground here. It's one thing to express one's political opinions; it's another thing to express one's opinions about celebrities expressing their political opinions.
Okay, I suppose that's clear enough.
toyroy 10-26-2008, 06:35 PM ..."only a FOOL would listen to an actor"..
It wasn't Ronald Reagan who said that?
El Gato 10-26-2008, 06:46 PM  :)
Maybe people who are upset by Howard's move are just jealous because the actors endorsing Obama once played beloved all American characters whereas the only actors endorsing McCain are these yahoos:

John P 10-26-2008, 06:53 PM 'Tis well known conservatives are fairly thin on the ground in Hollywierd.

Yeah. That must be it. No idea who those two are and care even less. But you're right - it's just parasocial jealousy. After all, everyone knows the best choice for anything is the choice that has the most celebrities behind it. Right?

"I'm not just an entertainer. I'm an influence, a wielder of opinion, a force... a force!" - Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes
Zorro 10-26-2008, 08:41 PM http://i.cdn.turner.com/v5cache/TCM/Images/Dynamic/i63/FaceInTheCrowd1957_3_FF_300x225_011120081056.gif
Lonesome Rhodes: This whole country's just like my flock of sheep!
Marcia Jeffries: Sheep?
Lonesome Rhodes: Rednecks, crackers, hillbillies, hausfraus, shut-ins, pea-pickers - everybody that's got to jump when somebody else blows the whistle. They don't know it yet, but they're all gonna be 'Fighters for Obama'. They're mine! I own 'em! They think like I do. Only they're even more stupid than I am, so I gotta think for 'em. Marcia, you just wait and see. I'm gonna be the power behind the president - and you'll be the power behind me!

frankenstyrene 10-26-2008, 09:05 PM Thanks for ruining my keyboard and screen, Zorro.
SteveR 10-26-2008, 11:11 PM Hm. For a political thread, this one's staying civil. For now, anyway.
A thought: when we were kids, we didn't think about politics, we just built models and had fun. Well, in our memory maybe. We've come to this forum to re-live our childhoods to a certain extent. Politics and religion take us out of that reverie, and so are not welcome topics, in my opinion.
Now regarding sex, as long as the discussion stays immature and juvenile, it's fine with me. ;)
PhilipMarlowe 10-27-2008, 12:09 AM I'd be just as insulted by their stupid wh*rishness as I am by Howard's, et al.
Yep,that's not more hyperbole, nothing screams out "wh*re" like these guys:
http://www.tagsrwc.com/interactive/wcard/andy_opie_auntbee_family.jpg
Hey, they're not wearing flag pins either. They must not love America. And letting Otis sleep in the jail for free was nothing but socialism. And that Andy associated with some shady people, including bootleggers,Chicago gangsters, and a goat that ate dynamite and committted acts of domestic terrorism.
They're obviously bad people. We should fear and dismiss them.
Zathros 10-27-2008, 12:18 AM Imo, if you arent discussung anything thats insulting to anyone, then anything can be discussed..including kits that may or not be made by ANY company...
mcdougall 10-27-2008, 12:45 AM I agree Zathros...the right to free speech is sacred whether you're talking about Aurora Kits' cameos in movies or seeing Ron Howard relive some old roles...no harm...no foul...:)

Remember, nine out of ten alcoholic, drug-addicted actors in or out of rehab endorse Obama! :)
PhilipMarlowe 10-27-2008, 08:17 AM Yes, Ron Howard and Andy Griffith are all about being alcoholic, drug addicted, and whorish. :freak:
Ulike manly, thoughtful, and experienced Jon Voight, whose whole life just screams "responsible family values".
Well, except for that time two of his kids made out together on live national TV.
sbaxter 10-27-2008, 09:36 AM Can't we go back to the pointless bickering about the sets for the new Star Trek film? The potential for changing each other's minds on that subject seems much higher -- which is to say, zero, which is better than a negative number. And that debate only gives me a raging headache, but at least blood doesn't shoot out of my eyes because of it.
I will say that what most surprised me about the linked video is that Henry Winkler didn't look half as ridiculous as the Fonz as I imagined he might at this late date.

maucutt 10-27-2008, 10:05 AM It's evident who the Leftist are and who the conservatives are. Evident by the snobbish comebacks.
Lets stick to modeling-this stuff can destroy the Hobby Talk community.
JeffG 10-27-2008, 10:06 AM Some people hold up through the years pretty well. I saw a commercial recently with Mr. T and he still looks pretty good too.
Zorro 10-27-2008, 10:08 AM Remember, nine out of ten alcoholic, drug-addicted actors in or out of rehab endorse Obama! :)
And then there's this guy. ;)
http://globalclimatechange.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/rush-limbaugh-oxycontin1.jpg
terryr 10-27-2008, 10:24 AM Maybe the actors would vote for him, but Opie, Andy, Fonzie, and Ritchie are blue collar conservatives.
JeffG 10-27-2008, 11:20 AM Personally, there are some other pills I could suggest for Mr. Limbaugh to take!
BrianM 10-27-2008, 11:39 AM It was amusing. Ron Howard is a pretty nice guy. It didn't change my mind or my vote, but so what. This is America, we can agree to disagree and respect and honor our freedom to do so...
By the way, Andy Griffith is so much more than Sherriff Taylor and Ben Matlock. Watch "Face in the Crowd" and you'll be amazed at his performance.
Zorro 10-27-2008, 04:13 PM Watch "Face in the Crowd" and you'll be amazed at his performance.
Word! And you'll be amazed by Betty Lou Fleckum too!

http://www.lileks.com/bleats/archive/05/0905/0902art/noir/6.jpgYoung Lee Remick (drool, pant, slobber). The bit where Lonesome Rhodes is leering as she does her baton-twirling routine is one of the most lascivious scenes in American film -- and it's just a guy watching a girl twirl a baton.
Andy Griffith was an excellent character actor who, IMNSHO, squandered his talent doing that cornpone sitcom all those years. But hell, it was a steady paycheck.
