Ok I was able to fully diassemble my LEV120 to find the problem. It was just as I suspected a broken camshaft. It was broken completely in two. Everything else is in good shape except for the crank which broke on accident. I used the factory knock off tool and wacked it to get the flywheel off, but I guess I wacked it too hard, because I broke the snout of the crankshaft. Obviously I could get another cheaper lawn mower to use. But it's turning fall and this will be a nice project to keep me busy besides my project car. Now comes the money issue. Where is the cheapest place to buy parts for this engine? Obviously the camshaft and crankshaft are the most expensive. The parts list I compiled consists of these:

37613A - Engine Gasket Set
32600 - Crankshaft Seal
37289 - Intake Valve
40006 - Piston Ring Set
37692 - Crankshaft
37460 - Camshaft

All of this came up to a little over $200. Any idea of a website that has the best prices? Any idea where I could get a used crankshaft?

If it's a standard crankshaft, 7/8" O.D. and 3 5/32nds long, with a a #6 keyway (5/32"), you can get an engine cheap from any number of websites, for about the same price or less probably of that of the repair parts you quote. Or, you can get a short-block also for about the same, or less. I'd strongly suggest you call your local mower shop too, as they often have specials available through their distributors. Briggs had some good ones, but if you were to swap for a Briggs you'd need a new presence control cable, poss. throttle cable, and it may not clear the grass chute etc. - we call it repowering, and it can be a pain.

P.S. I won't cite websites - they're in conflict with me as I'm authorized for Tecumseh & Briggs, Kohler, Honda & Generac Engine, but they're out there. If you get one from your local shop, you may pay a bit more, but the support when you have questions is usually top-notch, and most are willing to guide you unless you keep calling them over and over. I've won over many mass-merchant customers...your choice

Is there interchange issues as with automotive engines? Are they all the same material? Will a crankshaft from any LEV120 work? I remember the instrutions say there was a 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, and 3/4 knock off tool for the crank snouth. I guess that means there were different cranks for all the LEV motors. Mine has the 1/2" fine threaded flywheel nut. I can a camshaft I know. I just was wondering about the crank. One more question. I removed the piston to check out the cylinder for any damage and saw nothing. The crosshatces still appear all down the cylinder. I know you can't do it on an automotive engine. But is ok to reinstall the piston with rings in an untouched cylinder, if you've not worked on the piston or cylinder? I was going to replace the broken parts, clean everything up, reseal, and tighten everything factory specs, and put in new oil and gas. Should that be adequate on a mower engine?

If this is the engine from your other post, I believe you said it was a Toro. Toro mowers do not use a standard crankshaft, in that they use a 7/16" blade bolt and most mowers use a 3/8" blade bolt. If you go the route of a new engine, you would need one that is for your mower, so the blade will mount up without modification.

The repairs you listed should be adequate, in fact you could probably forgo the ring set and intake valve and still be alright. No need to hone cylinder if crosshatch is still there.
